“He was, he was a friend of mine ”
On "Live to Ride" (from Harvest Moon), Neil Young sings “He was, he was a friend of mine”. After reading this article, Neil could have been singing about Mike Wolf, a model train executive.
An AP news story "Soured Friendship Underpins Lionel Woes" lays out a detailed history of Neil's involvement with Lionel model trains which many are familiar with.
"Mike Wolf remembers the night rock star Neil Young came to a party at his house and stayed up all night writing a song.
'He woke up in the morning and said, 'Hey man, I was feeling so good last night and I wrote a song,'' Wolf recalled in an interview. ''It's a great song. I don't know what I'm going name it yet but I'll let you know.''
Wolf, the founder and chief executive of MTH Electric Trains, is sitting behind his desk in his Columbia, Md., office. He reaches up to a shelf behind his desk and pulls down an autographed Neil Young CD. It says: 'Mike, I wrote 'Harvest Moon' at your house.''"
UPDATE 1/15/08: Since the publication of this article both Neil and Mike Wolf have disavowed the article's premise. They are on cordial speaking terms, according sources in the model train community.

I don't think Neil could have written Live to Ride about this guy. It seems their friendship soured after Harvest Moon.
A great recent story was delivered to me through a great friend. Seems he bought a new Lionel train for Christmas, or tried to. He couldn't find the one he wanted locally and after much searching ordered one through the compnay on-line. Well the delivery was delayed until after New Years and after receipt there were a couple of non-working problems with the train set. He contacted the local authorized dealer who insisted that beacause he didn't buy it there, they couldn't repair it for him. So after some searching for help, he boxed up the set and sent it off the California to get fixed. In the meantime, the local dealer called back informing him that they were allowed to fix it. Never the less, while in contact with the national company in California, the service representative infomred him that 'someone would like to speak to you". None other than Neil Young took the call to inform him that " I'll make sure this gets taken care of"! How's that?! Neil Young delivering again! A man of principle and follow through. Same as his music. And his concerts and his public endeavors. Anyhow, he was glad to hear that my friend was a big fan and Neil made his day. Thanks Neil, come by for dinner when yo're in town!
