New York City Concert Reviews: 12/12, 13, 15, 16, 18, & 19/07

neil-young-new-york-12-13-07.jpg
December 13, 2007

From Media Matters by Eric Alterman:
In many ways, I gotta say, except for the drunks, it was a near-perfect concert. Just a handful of musicians have a catalogue as strong as Neil's and fewer still play with power and intensity he does once the band gets going. The newer stuff lends itself to long, measured riffing, and the older stuff -- the highlight being a bulldozer version of "Like a Hurricane" as the final encore -- can reach a kind of transcendence that can make you forget who and where you are without any drugs or sex involved. In case it's been a while since you've reminded yourself why so many people think of Neil as a national treasure, well, the answer, my friend, is playing at the United Palace Church in Washington Heights.

Neil Young will be performing tonight at United Palace, New York City, New York.

Tour Paintings for Bridge School with Concert Footage on YouTube

Here's a cool clip from the tour. Looks to be Demme's L.A. Johnson's filming in Philadelphia.

Shortly, Eric Johnson's original paintings that he has been creating on stage (as the Devil from greendale) during the Chrome Dreams II tour will be available for purchase. The money from their sale will go to the Bridge School.

Obviously this is a very limited collection which should have a great value to fans and supporters of the school.

Thought this was a cool wide angle photo of Larry Cragg and Neil's guitars from Massey Hall on Nov 29, 2007. Sorry, you've either got to turn your head sideways or your PC monitor.

Thanks Ed!

Europe Winter 2008 Concert Tour: Reviews

2008 Europe Summer Concert Tour Date Schedule & Information

Europe Winter 2008 Concert Tour: Wrapup + analysis by Roel:

This tour's song chart is now complete.

And here is a chart analysis:

The addition of Homegrown on the last show made for 53 different songs in 21 shows. The last show was the longest one, with 26 songs in total. The core setlist of songs that he would play on every concert of this tour consisted of: From Hank To Hendrix, Ambulance Blues, A Man Needs A Maid, Harvest, Love Art Blues, Dirty Old Man, Spirit Road, Oh Lonesome Me and No Hidden Path.

He would vary the set throughout the tour, especially the acoustic set. There he played rare songs like Try, Kansas, Stringman, Love In Mind, Campaigner, Separate Ways, Flying On The Ground Is Wrong, On The Way Home and even Mexico. Mexico and Try were debuted on the American leg of the tour in 2007, and Neil seems to like Try, he played it on over half the shows in Europe.

Both Spirit Road and No Hidden Path proved again to be good jamming-songs. Neil enjoyed them both, and especially No Hidden Path became longer and longer, turning into a 25+ minute song on one show. Quite often would Neil hurt his fingers or nails while attacking Old Black on No Hidden Path! The Sultan made its appearance again, which would always be played on the last show of a run of multiple shows in one venue.

On the last of the three Amsterdam shows, Neil changed the electric set. He not only started playing Powderfinger as of the 2nd show, but on this 3rd show also introduced three new songs for the band, Down By The River, Hey Hey My My and Too Far Gone. After this show he would add more songs associated more with Crazy Horse than with any other band: Fuckin' Up, Roll Another Number and Tonight's The Night. However, those last two featured Ben Keith and Ralph Molina on the original arrangement, so it's quite a logical choice for the band.

Neil was very talkative on these shows. There would often be some chatter with the crowd, and some of the rarities played on the tour were direct requests from people in the front rows.

Concert Review of the Moment: Wallingford, CT - 12/7/07

The Concert Review of the Moment on Wallingford, CT - 12/7/07 comes via Joe Billington's brother-in-law who he relayed this account:
"Sara M. Billington, age 3, of Moosup, CT saw her 2nd live Neil Young concert on 12/07/2007 at the Chevrolet Theater in Wallingford, CT and she loved every minute of the show. She stayed awake for all of the show except for Neil's last set when he played electric guitar. Sara also got to meet Neil, his wife, and their family dog in Neil's dressing room before the show. She was accompanied by her parents - Joe and Denise Billington, also of Moosup, CT. Sara is Neil's youngest fan and has listened to his music and watched his music videos daily since she was 2 years old. It was a day and night she will never forget. She was thrilled to finally meet Neil in person!"

Philadelphia, PA Concert Reviews: 12/9 & 10/07

2007-12-10-tower-theater-philadelphia.jpg

Still recovering from the 2 Philly shows and having trouble figuring out where to start. These were our 3rd and 4th shows of the tour and in the immediate afterglow of a Neil concert it's difficult to make the inevitable comparisons because every Neil show is so unique and special in its own way. Generally, I would say Neil was more intense and focused at the 2 Washington, DC shows whereas he was much more loose and spirited in Philly.

As with DC, the 2nd night was the better experience. In DC on night #2, Neil dropped a verse from "Try"'s debut, digressed about energy and power grids, went crazy on "No Hidden Path" knocking over mic stands and practically climbing on the piano during "Tonight's The Night" he was so possessed. In Philly night #2, Neil told wonderful stories about his Granny and gave a truly remarkable introduction to "After The Goldrush" with comments on the Nobel Peace prize, Al Gore, and global warming. He was truly warm, funny and engaging.

2007-12-10-hurricane.jpg

So what else? 1st night we got "Mexico", another rarity! And 2nd night, "Kansas", "Try" and show closing "Sultan". It's hard to imagine it being better.

Then there was "Ambulance Blues". For some veteran concert goers this performance has been called one of Neil's all time best. On the first night, after the line "Pissin' in the wind", there's usually cheering. But not Philly. The first verse was greeted by reverant silence and only on the repeat of "Pissin' in the wind" were there a few whistles and whoops. Upon completion, Thrashette turned to me, exhaled and said "I forgot to breathe". It was that mesmerizing.

Clearly, Neil was quite happy to be in Philadelphia. Comments about W.C. Fields, the Tower Theater, a "great audience" all indicated that we were for a real treat.

At the first DC show, I was so focused on Neil that I missed many aspects of the staging such as the equipment, lighting and artwork. Last night, I was able to take in many more details, particularly the lighting. This may have been because the shows were being filmed by Jonathan Demme. It seemed as if each song had it's own color pallet. At one point during "No Hidden Path", during the solo meltdown, it seemed that every light in the grid, stage, backwall, and alphabet letters lit up just as Neil peaked. It was truly an un-worldy experience visually and sonically.

Also, not enough can be said about how the crafting of the setlists is similar to the artist drawing the song's title cards. Just as each song is selected and it's sequencing conveys its own message, so do the artist's renderings of the songs. It's really all too cool.

2007-12-10-hurricane-2.jpg

So many other highlights that I'll just hit on a few more. Sunday's "A Man Needs A Maid" was played without the organ and just the grand piano. It was amazing how the very last note seemed to sustain and hang in the air until the audience applause began. And thank God for an audience that wasn't yelling out at all the wrong moments during the acoustic set. Way to go Philly!

Also on Sunday, Neil knocked over one of his guitars during "Cowgirl in the Sand" and made a funny comment like " it wants to be played" or something. When the music stopped Larry Cragg rushed out to see what was going on and seemed quite startled that something went wrong.

The second night's "Hurricane" was much more focused and tight. On the first night, there were at least three different concluding codas before it settled into the feedback finale. It seemed Neil couldn't get everyone on the same page. Not so on the second night when he was facing drummer Ralph for much on the song's conclusion.

2007-12-10-film-release.jpg

We feel incredibly fortunate to be present for 2 nights of filming. While it won't result in something as beautifully gorgeous as the Heart of Gold film, it'll be cool to someday be able to say "Hey, we were there at the Philly shows!"

2007-12-10-philadelphia-bow.jpg

When Neil did the encore bow, he was drenched in sweat and exhausted but was smiling the biggest smile I have ever seen on him. The band stood arm in arm for what seemed like a minute soaking in the standing ovation. They looked like they had all had the time of their life. And so had we. Lucky us. Thanks Neil & Pegi & friends.

Besides the music, it was tremendous to renew long friendships and make new Neil buddies. Thanks Dee and Tim for putting together the Rust-fest. Nice to catch up with Mark "Powderfinger" and Tish again through the years. Being with Frank Z for his 106th Neil show!!! Ed "Wheel In The Ditch" thanks so much for hooking me up with the Sunday show - sounds great! Bill "Tired Eyes" it was cool hanging out by the totem pole and doing post show analysis over Belgian ales. Nice meeting you Lou "more to the picture". Loved the poster stories! And it was great meeting everyone else.

Concert Review of the Moment: Wallingford, CT - 12/7/07

The Concert Review of the Moment of Wallingford, CT Concert Reviews - 12/7/07 by shitty horse:
The great thing about Neil playing Oakdale is that it's right in my home town. I had yesterday off from work and took the time to drive in to the parking lot at around 9:00-The tour buses were there! I sat there drinking my coffee waiting hoping to catch Neil- or at least Ralph or Ben-But no such luck! So I took a picture of the sign out front
NEIL YOUNG
SOLD OUT
TONIGHT
as I pulled out. I counted down the hours to show #13 for me. I spent too much time drinking beers and smoking some rope in the car before the show that we missed Peggy's set and From Hank to Hendrix but walked in to Neil starting "Ambulance Blues" which Im so glad I didnt miss!. "No one seems to know" was just fucking awesome as well as a 'man needs a maid' I was kinda hoping for 'Campainer' or "Cowgirl" tonight but the "Old Man' and "Heart of Gold" combo was a knock-out. During Intermission I stunk the out-side up ripping a joint as I walked around. People were looking and smelling but no one knew where it was coming from. "Don't cry no Tears" was a really good surprise not quite as edgy as past times I've heard it from the Horse but still a great number. My buddy whom I was sitting with got down front and called me ten minutes later. "yo Im in the front row you have to come down here. There are no guards !" I got down to the front and it was unbelieveable to hear Cinn.Girl and Cortez up front with Neil RIGHT THERE! After the song I saw Neil gesture Peggy and the band down to take the bow -signalling the end of the show! It was a great night and I got some great footage on my phone. ROCK ON NEIL- YOU RULE YOU OLD FUCKER!
