Spin & Counter-Spin on LWW
There's been a lot of spin over the album LIVING WITH WAR. Some on the right have argued that the album "failed" because it only reached #15 on the charts. Others argue for success -- both in terms of sales and message.
From DownWithTyranny!: DESPITE THE FAR RIGHT'S BEST EFFORTS, NEIL YOUNG'S LIVING WITH WAR, IS FLYING OFF THE STORE SHELVES:
"Overseas, they seem to like LIVING WITH WAR too. While the U.S. week #1 was 60,000, outside of the U.S., the # was over 160,000. It entered the Canadian sales chart at #7 and came in #11 in Germany (Europe's biggest market) and #14 in the U.K. It was #4 in Norway and #11 in Sweden."
From Manchester (CT) Journal Inquirer - Can music help to end a war? by Keith C. Burris:
"'Living with War,' ... is clearly 'of the moment' [b]ut is no less significant. In fact, it could help to end the U.S. war on Iraq. It could light a fire under people who already oppose the war and get them voting and organizing. It might change the minds of others."

The world needs more failures like Living with War and less successes like American Idol.

Well put!
As someone who has worked selling Neil albums for many years, I can assure you that LIVING WITH WAR is anything but a failure. Anyone saying that is just spinning it. Neil did more promotion on setting up the PRAIRIE WIND release than I had ever seen him do and virtually nothing for LIVING WITH WAR (at least not yet; just wait... hehe) and LIVING WITH WAR came roaring out of the gate with almost as high a first week chart number as PRAIRIE WIND. And now the word of mouth about how good this record really is has started. Over the long run-- which in a non-AMERICAN IDOL world is all that matters-- LIVING WITH WAR will be a strong and healthy seller and a record Neil and Neil fans can be very proud of.

amelia earhart, jimmy hoffa, the JFK assasination--not mysteries to me--the sucess of American Idol--now THAT is a mystery...Neil has never been about chart success...it's about getting the Music out there--ya like it, fine...ya don't like it, fine...Archives in 2007 ?
ASG
and don't forget that Living With War is notching up much higher than normal download sales - not picked up by most album charts - but running at around 16% the level of CD sales (3x above average).
So whereas it would normally be around 8,000 it's probably more like 25,000 downloads on top of the 140,000.
Talking to some friends, who don't have a computer, didn't even know Neil had a new album out.
Keep spreading the word folks !!!
