Wake up people! Today The USA is a disaster. Donald Trump is destroying America bit by bit with his staff of wannabes, people with no experience or talent, closet alcoholic wife beaters, inexperienced leaders who only know how to lie to keep favor with the Trump falseness so they can hold their unearned positions in his inept government, a Congress full of Republicans acting like idiots with no conscience… Yes. He has divided us. How did we elect these creeps who have no spine, no values, no conscience, no way to save the USA.
We need to take Trump at his word. Make America Great Again. It won’t be easy while he is trying to turn our cites into battlegrounds so he can cancel our elections with marshal law and escape all accountability.
Something has to change this. We know what to do. Rise up. Peacefully in millions. Too many innocent people are dying.

Looks like we are guaranteed another lame plug in and play protest record from Neil this year
Looks like we are guaranteed another series of lame comments to be plugged in whenever during this year Neil Young decides to go on record with his protest.
For this year one can expect the release of "Mirror Ball Live" (supposedly a double album), another album covering the recent "Love Earth World Tour" supposedly also a double album. It's not unlikely that the ORS Box Set series will be continued with vinyl albums which are increasingly hard to find at reasonable prices. The other day Neil Young mentioned to be working on a vinly release of the late Ben Keith's Seven Gates / Christmas at the Ranch (supposedly an effort to rectify, at least posthumously, the neglect with which this recording was treated). Most of the songs of his most recent album "Talking to the Trees" did not have any live exposure, but maybe this upcoming tour in Europe will see for that.

@ Dionys - again thanks for being here with us in 2026. Regular folks are dropping off. We haven't seen Dan or other TW regulars for a long while. We know we have disappointed many by our attempts at impartiality and trying to walk the line.
Many feel this is wrong to stay centered. It has worked for us for the most part as we have swerved from ditch to ditch. To be clear, just because we do post on a subject or not, does not necessarily mean that we support or reject a particular cause, etc.
Lastly, thanks for the 2026 preview. We'll work on developing that as a future post.

Unfortunately the reason we ended up with Trump is because they offered us Kamala Harris and Tim Waltz. The DNC needs to be real careful who they put forth in the primaries.
If somebody in all seriousness believes that Harris and Waltz would have committed the crimes of the current government, threatened allies with military action, breaking international law, organize state terrorism and shitting on the American people, now that intellectually desperate somebody truly deserves the present racket posing as government.

Last year, we questioned the waving of signs as an effective tactic against TPTB. This is a hotly debated topic of which tactic is more effective: direct action/protest vs fundamental personal behavior change.
At the rate of acceleration of the Big Shift, it looks like we may actually find out during in our lifetime on this EARTH.

I was at the protest yesterday in LA. My sense, which may or may not be based in any real objective reality, is that there is increasing anger and fear among those demonstrating. Understandably, and yet simultaneously, unnerving.
To the debate over direct action/protest vs personal change (inner work?), I'm very much a Both/And. If you want to approach the direct action without anger and fear (to harness the power of "love and only love", if you will), making fundamental changes in the way you interact with your community and your environment seems essential. And if you want the fundamental changes you're working towards on a personal level to have systemic impact, you have to take action. That doesn't mean you have to be in the streets protesting (though I would argue that is important and effective), but it does mean working towards persuading others of how we can live peacefully in community with one another and the environment.
I was listening to M. Gessen and Ezra Klein discussing the week's events, both domestic and foreign. Gessen is an astute observer of how societies slide into autocracy, having been raised in the Soviet Union and then later fleeing Russia under Putin. I highly recommend the whole episode (https://www.nytimes.com/2026/01/10/opinion/ezra-klein-podcast-m-gessen.html) , but in a relevant passage to this discussion Gessen, says:
"So the stage has been set for this execution for nearly a year. It’s almost surprising that this didn’t happen earlier, but now that it has happened, what happens as autocracy establishes itself is that the space available for action shrinks very rapidly.
I talk about this a lot when I do public speaking and people ask me: What should we do? And I say: Well, do something. Because whatever you can do today, you’re not going to be able to do tomorrow. So act where you can act."
This echoes, of course, Dionys point.

If I may risk a comment as a European who loves the good AND the bad sides of 'merica.
All my life I've heard terrifying accusations of authoritarianism, fascism and all-around pure evilness thrown at Republican presidents. And yet every one of their presidencies ended with no significant violence, democracy intact, and a new shiny Democrat president doing nothing meaningful for the next 4-8 years but pampering to his billionnaire donours.
Also, the current figurehead for whatever coalition of lobbies happens to be ruling DC right now, WWE hall-of-famer Mr Trump, while certainly not someone I would have voted for, is the only President in my lifetime who hasn't yet started a foreign war. For that reason only he stands orange head and shoulders above Reagan, Obama and al.

As another European could not disagree with VIP more. Trump is an evil fascist determined to enrich himself, his family and cronies at the expense of the American people. What is particularly saddening is the lack of strong opposition from the Democrats or Republicans who have no moral fibre at all. They are all scared of the consequences of standing up to this bully. Even the European governments tread softly in case they upset him.
Given Trump's age and health issues one can only hope that he will depart this life sooner rather than later. That will be a day of rejoicing. But then you have JD and all the other Trump wannabees.

I've been attending local protests in CT and Maui almost weekly for the past 11 months. The resistance is growing, but not fast enough. Most of us are bone tired from trying to get our representatives to act. But we'll keep doing it.

My impression is that the resistance by now is way too much focussed on quantity instead of quality. The horrible incident in Minneapolis resulting in the murder of Renee N. Good teaches several lessons. 1. The state terrorists can handle large groups of protesters (after all what did they invent pepper spray and tear gas for, if not crowd control?). 2. What they cannot control is many smaller groups of determined and tenacious people confronting them individually. 3. As it sadly turned out, confronting these windegos in a non-violent way (!) as suggested in #2 is coming with an extremely high personal risk when these death squadrons are "on duty".
4. But they are not on duty all the time and in all places of their shabby and desperate existence. They have to eat, sleep, buy groceries, drive their car, take care of their families (if they have one and know what that means), they need to see doctors and pharmacies, somewhere they have to relax. Oh, and don't forget, behind their masks they have an identity.
There is / was a mobile phone short video on NYA with a statement of a legitimate law person in Philadelphia. She threatened to arrest any masked state terrorists making their way into her city. While that might be a rather steep announcement it points in the right direction, I think.
@VIP In addition to the "kinetic" (Orwellian speech for killing people) strikes mentioned by Dionys, let us not forget the war on the planet. By propping up coal and other fossil fuels while simultaneously attempting to undercut renewable energy sources, this administration is killing the planet, irrespective of borders. The greatest crime the Biden administration committed was its failure to adequately champion and institutionalize the great strides it made in getting the US on course with helping to solve the climate crisis, all of which is now being dismantled by the short-sighted robber barons now in charge. The damage will unfold more slowly than that from dropping bombs, but rest assured it will be more all encompassing in the aggregate and it will include all of us.

In case anyone was wondering, I had a great weekend here, enjoying my life peacefully in the greatest country in the world. Beautiful weather here in the Bay Area after a long stretch of essential rain.
Saturday, I worked. The store was full of locals enjoying a beautiful day, everyone seemed pretty happy to me. Hung out with some family and friends after and all day on Sunday. Watched a ton of exciting playoff football. My team lost, but still a lot of good action watching the best sport in the best country. Really, a wonderful weekend all around....
Except, of course, for finding out about Bob Weir passing on to the next stage. Kind of unexpected, and really sad to know that the 'front line' of the Grateful Dead is now gone forever. I was hoping to hear something about that here, but I forget that we don't talk about actual music here on this sight anymore.
I saw some highlights from the Golden Globes show. Pretty brave for the Hollywood stars to rail on about ICE agents, as security guards who are dressed like ICE agents guard the building. Apparently the beautiful people are encouraging folks like our brave Alan to show up at protests and potentially get their brains blown away, but don't try to get into the awards show, right? That's for the important people, only.
Anyhow, somebody mentioned something about wanting to hear from a Trump supporter, so there you go!

Interesting little tidbit I've learned recently. I saw a chart of countries who have arrested their own citizens over online comments. The UK is far and away the ruler of this category with over 12,000 arrests, followed by Belarus with over 5000, then Germany with over 3500. Far more than even China with over 1500.
The United States? The country with the "GREATEST DICTATOR OF MODERN TIMES"??? About 50.

On "Trios" the only Grateful Dead member who made a contribution was Bob Weir. Maybe Robert Hunter or Jerry Garcia wrote the lyrics, but in the context of this collaboration with Rob Wasserman and Neil Young that was his song and he sang and played it.
While the Dead originated in California it's quite ridiculous to claim some superiority of knowledge regarding this chameleon rock band as if Pigpen had been a close cousin, living next door in California. There was a Deadhead farm and many other related communities in West Germany, too. And they were just as far out as their original American counterparts.
As a furthur character invented by the Deads original entourage once wrote: "Never give an inch"

Replying to clarify my intent, for an old friend.

Somebody calling me a nazi in Germany will be taken to court, if I, being the addressed person, want it that way, that person will not be arrested but will have to stand court procedures, not necessarily a full-blown trial. The person can get away with a fine. The fine would be going to a tax deductible organization dedicated to the support of social causes. Myself would not have any personal financial gain from the proceedings. What that offending person cannot do is hiding behind "free speech", that's for the court to decide, whether the offense is covered by that right. In this case it's simple: Calling me a nazi is not - period. Under EU and German coded law (laws passed by democratic majorities and not applied by appointed judges who happen to be convenient to the government) the platform providing the digital megaphone to the offender will be taken to task as well (Digital Services Act) and that's where this garbage comes from: The DSA provides for some effective protection of citizens against the business model of FAANGS to ever increase their outreach by ever increasing outrage through the hate speech they are publishing. Touting statistics of this kind is comparable to playing the useful idiot for an arsonist. (See, I do not call anyone an idiot or a political arsonist, I make a comparison, which is perfectly in line with the laws in this hemisphere...) All of that requires close reading and a minimum in language competence as instead of blaring out fake statistics, empty, false, and derogatory statements etc.
Whether "Easy Answers" is one of the worst Dead songs is arguable of course. But it appeared to be a fitting comment to the issue at hand: There is a not very fine line between the truth and and the oversimplified version of a truth, an easy answer, which is to be called a lie.
Sadly, the divide and conquer strategy prevails.

With all humble respect, Thrasher, that's a wrong metaphor. To build a bridge there needs to be solid ground on the other side. When debated regarding affordability, arguments and reality proved the troll for what he is. When debated immigration the troll resorted to calling me names, offended my ancestors, and had nothing to offer but hazy memories of the little high school history he remembers with a good measure of WWII movie stereotypes thrown in. When confronted with some real historic background he leaves your website with the damage done. When the reality of government goons running rampant in American cities is talked about here the troll tries to qualify this as to be an incomplete picture blowing himself and his little town up to epic proportions falsely claiming somebody asked for it. Next thing the troll goes on the offense by distributing false statistics and when being corrected misrepresents and distorts information. Not even his pretended Grateful Dead expertise holds any water. In sum neither argument nor reality prevents this troll from molesting everybody else. And all of this while cowardly hiding behind his version of "free speech"? It's your website and your rules but as you mentioned yourself in one of the comments above: regulars are leaving or stop contributing. If you asked whether the people on this blog want to read comments of this kind (including mine) my guess is that they would rather have a rules based forum. And you can be assured I would be holding on to the rules, maybe even the troll also?

As a long time contributor here, we truly value your opinion. As you well know, this is all extremely difficult for us to manage as one of the last humans on the internet to manage a website without AI.
As you state, a rules based forum with AI programming would handle this thread with no sweat.
We're committed to making it through 2026 without a "glass accident ".
But Neil fans -- like everyone-- have to take responsibility for their behaviors. We see emotions running hot, leading to bad decisions with terrible consequences.

With some slack, generosity and shared responsibilities I still think that could be done without using AI or overburdening the Thrashers. But the effort currently necessary to reign in utter bs is way too big. Known rules make people think twice before they push the send button. You mentioned the responsibilities of Neil fans for their behaviours. Bringing up children, educating them from grade 5 to college level I learnt something: responsibilities have to come with consequences and sanctions, if they don't, they are transferred in to a nebulous karma cloud. From there they come back to haunt you. My lifetime experience tells me that this is even more true for adults who never took on some serious responsibility. That attitude might create some pain on both sides, the sanctioned and the sanctioning, It spares much more pain for everybody later on. One can ride a horse with no bridle or reign, but that's not meant for all mares and not all horsemen.
I hope I didn’t hurt anyone’s feelings with my late night rants. I am extremely upset & I don’t think being patient & kind is getting us very far with Trump’s fascist followers & military goons hurting citizens. I am bloody pissed. This is a cause worth dying for. Liberty, justice, human rights!

Measles will find a way to break past one school district, just look at its long history with human beings. In 2000, the United States, via the CDC, declared measles vanquished and indeed it would have stayed that way if not for a crew of ignorant and self-involved fools. The buffoon in charge, RFKjr, is not-by any known criteria- a virologist or epidemic disease expert. Instead, he is a craven Trump ass-kisser with a desire for power and vengeance (against all those who know he is a buffoon). This is a microcosmic picture of the rest of the mess. Remember my friends, that children are certain to die and for what? Not, as Camus said, "for the bane and enlightenment of men" (The Plague) but just for malicious foolishness and profound stupidity. Good morning all! Think about this argument. Greenland really needs to belong to the United States because we need it for our national security and the natural resources going forward. Greenlanders will be safer under United States control.
This is pathetic and it is exactly the argument I have heard over and over again from "senior officials." Clearly the conclusion- that the US should own Greenland- does not follow from the flimsy premise that the US needs it for its national security. In fact, nothing follows logically from this premise or combined with the premise about minerals. This is truly grade school stuff, when we all learned that might does not make right. I think owning Mexico would also be really great for our national security, so does it follow that we would be justified in taking it? Of course not. This is so stupid. But if you bother to read parts of Project 2025 you will find the archaic reasoning that might does indeed make right. The US is in the business of creating colonies? It sure seems so. Huge strides backwards.
David, you are wrong about youthful idols. Over time, they may become even more important and valuable for your own moral compass. In our youth, we often do not understand our idols. In many cases we do outgrow this idols and other cases we might grow into them.
I've been doing some thinking/reflecting on the 2024 Election as mentioned by Marmooskapaul. IMHO Trump won the election for a few reasons:
1. Biden waited too long to drop out. He should've swallowed his pride and bowed out months earlier, giving Harris/Dems MORE time to make their arguments.
2. Millions of registered voters STAYED HOME...close to 30%. Sadly, a majority of them were Democrats. Democrats tend not to take their right to vote as seriously as Republicans do.
3. Like in 2016, the DNC failed to get out the vote, and got outmaneuvered at every turn by the RNC.
If this absolute train wreck of a Presidential administration does not wake us up to get out the vote in November...then, once again, as Jefferson said, "We get the government we deserve."
Think of this Abner. The U.S. President is more concerned with “protecting” protesters in Iran than he is with U.S. citizens in Minneapolis. He is now threatening to use the insurrectionist act to quell protesters! With “protection” like that, Iran is toast. He can’t run this country but wants to pull land grabs. We don’t need his civil war. And we surely don’t need a world war.

For several decades Neil Young added fan generation after fan generation to his following. It was to be seen at concerts, where dads brought their kids, occasionally there were even grandkids with hearing protection over their ears. Naturally he lost some of his fan community. "The Springfield on Sunset, that was the real thing. No, no, the original Crazy Horse, the stolen Rockets, with Danny... At his best he was with CSNY. With the "Rust Tour" he reached his peak and from then on it all went downhill. But don't you remember The Ducks, The Harvesters, The Shocking Pinks, The Bluenotes, The Restless, The Lostdogs, The Echos, Pearl Jam , Booker T. & The MGs, POTR or the new CHs their concerts, their records?" With every band and every record there was the chance for a new self-invention or another incarnation of Neil Young. In what has to be understood as the final years of a human being every day without ailments and suffering, even with some creativity, is a gift. If any of the commenters here will be as alert, involved and productive as Neil Young is at 80, he or she is a very lucky person.
A couple of yeras ago somebody on this or another blog asked "Does he still have another "Distant Camera" or "Red Sun" in him? I couldn't even remember these songs. (They are on "Silver & Gold", an album that I still don't like that much) But apparently they meant something to a number of people, a diefferent generation than mine. One can go by nit and cherry picking. Or one can perceive Neil Young's output as one long live's musical story. So it's just fine, if you outgrow the youthful idols. But why the complaining? I suspect it's the experience of getting old yourself. Maybe a hip-hop-haircut will help? Or a closer look at all these teenagers in basements and garages everywhere in the world who plug in an electric guitar? Rock'n' Roll can never die, even if it's not coming round the corner as the next big thing.
I just saw Christie’s (the auction house) is auctioning off the earliest printed copies of both The Declaration of Independence And The United States Constitution, the latter notable b/c this is the earliest known printed copy to include the words “These United States”. Expected to fetch hundreds of millions of dollars ahead of the 250th birth of our United States.
My first thought: Everything’s for sale/the owner’s gotta go to jail.

Unfortunately, the US electoral system is not structured to allow a third party candidate a real chance. Perot did not come close. He got 19%. The real record of third parties is to spoil races. The Naders and Jill Steins and Cornel Wests have done nothing but help hand over the presidency to Republicans. There's all sorts of complaining by the likes of Jill Stein about how the parties are the same, but what do we hear from her between her ludicrous presidential runs? Nothing. I agree with @Marmmoskapaul that we need a candidate that can win everywhere, not just on the coasts, and I'm not interested in any left-wing litmus tests.

Razor Love is an incredible song he played rarely. It ended up finally on Silver & Gold. It wasn’t my favorite of his many albums.
I liked the 3 songs CSN plucked from it, offered by Neil when he couldn’t figure out sequencing & what to leave in. So they took em & poured syrup on it.
Such a large collection of albums to choose from! What an experience it has been to follow Neil’s artistic offerings through the decades. Now we get to have our own “Man vs Tank” moment in the US.

Sadly, the Dems also work for the 1% & the DNC doesn’t even need to care whether they win or lose. We will still live in Oligarchy even after Trump is swept out. The Dems & Repubs have many of the same donors, make money off of weapons sales, big pharma, and both sides certainly agree with genocide in Gaza.
We will need to DEMAND health care for all to give the people a reason to vote for the Dems. News on can win easily. But the DNC doesn’t need to win. It’s the people who need, and we need a lot! Get king dumbass the hell out of the White House!
