Concert Review of the Moment: Neil Young and The Chrome Hearts: Gilford, NH - August 21
Neil Young and The Chrome Hearts
Thanks so much for sharing with us F.O.G.Went to Meadowbrook last night. What a fantastic show.By now we all know Neil does what he wants, and from my perspective it's beyond fortunate that what he wants to do is play these songs with this band. There were quiet folk songs (both deepish cuts- like Ambulance Blues and a couple of beautifully delivered later-days CSNY tunes-and fan favorites like Old Man and One of these Days.)I can't imagine those who just went to ROCK were disappointed either, I guess you could say there weren't as many "rarities" in that department but so many rockers, so joyously played by the band. There weren't too many rough edges or exceptions to the "holy cow these guys sound great together" rule of the night other than Spooner being inaudible from my spot in the pit, by and large the night was sublime. It's tough to pick out highlights because I enjoyed it so much. The vocal harmonies throughout were fantastic, I believe that after One of These Days what Neil was mumbling was something to the effect of "that was so much fun that even if there was no audience to listen to it we'd just be doing that by ourselves some place out back".Don't know what else I can do justice to after such a hot night. New Mama was a song I never figured I'd hear live and it would have been goose-bump inducing just as pretty much any Tonight's the Night material always is, even if it hadn't been delivered so beautifully. What else deserves mention here?I don't know, you run out of superlatives. It felt like a special night for the band- I don't remember seeing Neil finish a show by breaking (all? most?) of the strings on his guitar and then setting it down as if he'd better before he destroyed it entirely. After furious/joyous versions of Like a Hurricane and Into the Black it seemed like an appropriate end to the night, and you could see on their faces just how happy they were to be there on that stage together, playing that music last night.Magic! Thanks!!!
