I just saw that they got a Danger Bird encore. Now we're talking.
Danger Bird with Nils Lofgren, and that might be why DBD was denied.
This was Crazy Horse. As others have said. Real authentic Horse. They fell apart about three times as I expected, but ultimately played incredibly tight and sounded AMAZING. Unfortunately, I left after they turned on greensleeves. Has Neil ever came back out after it's been turned on??? Not in my 19 shows prior. Several angry people around me impacted the experience, but this is so healthy for these guys. Brings me to tears that at an a average age of 80 they are doing this, and doing it for themselves clearly. If on the fence I would go see this tour. At one point they were talking and testing a drum beat between songs and Neil came back and said - We had a band meeting, we are gonna stay together :-)
If you left after Hey Hey My My , you missed the Danger Bird with Nils, the house music had come on, but the lights never went out & they came back for one more
So tight. Extra Crunch added to old staples like Cinnamon Girl. This was in my late forties of his shows. 49 or so. I mean it's not a song I would look forward to having seen so many versions. But there's a certain vibe and economic purpose. Many allow for his noodling and doodling but this was all business. The Losing End and Don't Cry No Tears are two of my favorites. I love when Micah gets his improv in like Down by the River. Particle Kid gets in there at times but mostly he's supporting the songs in rhythm guitar. Crowd very appreciative all night. Big venue like Shoreline size. We were in 2 hours early right up on the wire in lawn. Was it Bill Graham who started Greensleeves to coda the end of shows at his Fillmore's ? When that came on we went towards the exit. That always signals the end. But the lights never came up. So allot of booing started coming from the seats. We did feel a bit cheated. I'm like hold on let's see where this is going. We go back to our spot. They come out for Dangerbird. Not a expected show closer but welcome debut none the less. Was he f$#&ing w us ?!. This is a special version of this band I loved. Well done.
.At the 5th annual Bridge School Benefit, the same week as the memorial, Neil Young dedicated a special instrumental version of his song, ‘Greensleeves’, to Bill. After every single concert Bill would play ‘Greensleeves’ over the loudspeakers of his venues to ease people back into reality, to let them know, hey, it’s ok…to go home. From Jambands.com
GREAT SHOW! All the boys were in the pocket, the sound quality and forcefulness were unbelievable. One of the very best Cortez versions I've ever heard. Yes, there were a few fumbles and stumbles...who cares? It's NEIL for heaven's sake! The biggest stumble was when, after his last acoustic song, he put on Old Black, and he and Ralph began to launch into "Hey, Hey" whilst Billy and later Mica dashed out and plugged in through the first notes...hahaha...Neil reached for the sky asking the Great Spirit what was up. Classic.
As for Greensleeves coming on after "Hey, Hey", I think someone in the crew must've f-ed up. I, too have never seen him come out after Greensleeves comes on. But the lights being off kept me in my seat. Nils, living in Phoenix, is on a 2-week break from the current Bruce tour, and I heard a few whispers about his joining in. Dangerbird was awesome. Neil's shredding was apocalyptic at times. So glad I was there!
So here's a slightly off topic question, but one that I've been curious about for a long time. Is it Danger Bird or Dangerbird? Two words or one? I've typed in both at various times, but I feel Danger Bird is the right way. Even on this thread, we see both versions. So which one is right, sports fans??
@Richie : I just looked at Zuma & Dume, and it’s two words.
Peace 🙏
That's what I always thought it was printed. The Sugar Mountain site has it at two words, so that seems to be it. Although, Dangerbird does have a flow to it. Either way, I've never seen a live one, so I'm jealous of those folks in Phoenix, and as an encore!
We are ready to go here in Austin. It’s gonna be a wet one, folks. Just sprung for the tower club upgrade, rain can’t hamper the Horse!
The two different set lists played in San Diego probably define the bulk of the songs that can be expected, with variations of course as the tour will progress. I'll check back during European morning hours. Enjoy the show!
