Go Neil! Here in Texas, the traumatized flashbacks kick in now whenever we read the words Polar Vortex...
There has been an ongoing debate if Global Warming would dominate a Maunder Minimum style Grand Solar Minimum (G.S.M.) for a few years now. For decades I've been reading that the history of G.S.M. is very well known in the ice core research done because of Global Warming funding for research when Al Gore was doing his lectures.
Think I posted a warning about Neil Young's winter tour here when it was announced and also sent a "letter to the editor" that Neil responded to after the Polar Vortex tour that it was tough on his tour bus, his roadies and the equipment.
If you aren't familiar with these terms now is the time to look them up and know them. One way to see how it works is look at the oral and written history of "Frost Fairs" on the River Thames in England. The river only freezes during these minimums and one time a promoter of a Frost Fair had an elephant walk across the River Thames to prove it was solid as a promotion.
They have labeled the current Grand Solar Minimum the Eddy. We will find winters like we've never seen before by anyone alive since they happen in a cycle every 400 years. When you sort of click back every four hundred years you see the movement of people all over the earth. It is rare for the movement to go north. Often, there is a minor solar minimum every couple of hundred years which still means there is nobody alive to tell you about it.
The study of Global Warming only includes the man made aspect of it so that only goes back to 1880 or so and earlier is out of the "purview of the study."
Some hallmarks of G.S.M. are earthquakes, volcanoes and much shorter growing seasons. Our current grid system for power is going to fail us if G.S.M. prevails over Global Warming. Summer will be shorter but hot and winter will be longer in a polar vortex sort of way if the research is correct.
Sadly for us, the research for G.S.M. has been "spot on."
Right now the earth has 52 active and many erupting volcanoes just as predicted. Sun spots are way down and the earth's magnetosphere is a bit wonky. Energy from deep space is being let in since the magnetosphere is so weak right now.
Is there good news? We have the technology from the 1800s to power homes/cars/equipment with magnets for individual homes if the federal government will release it. One time expense lasts for years, decades and maybe centuries. We can grow food indoors or underground with existing technology.
The sunsets this summer are going to be stunning because of the volcanoes. Remember the couple of years after Mt. Pinatubo erupted x52 today?
It isn't the end of the world by any means and we just have to gear up for it.
"February 2021 was the 16th-warmest February on record, NOAA reports," and it is fine to believe that as far as I'm concerned.
Hmm. GSM. Will it really put us in the deep freeze? The mid latitude polar winds have died due to Arctic warming. In the past, the polar vortex could not escape and drift south due to those winds. Now that the winds have died, we get Polar Vortex weather dropping to Southern latitudes in a bizarre, unnatural manner. The research on the GSM I have seen seems to say it will not put us in a mini ice age at all. Just on special occasions like what happened to Texas. Man made Global Warming is the bigger culprit here. We can’t blame Mother Nature for our crazy winters. Blame fossil fuel use. Alan in Seattle
Jim, without doubting anything that you've written, I just wanted to throw some perspective on the Thames "Frost Fairs". Of course, the winters of that period were much much colder than usual, there's no doubt about that. However, there was also a situation which certainly helped the river to freeze over, that being that at the time there was, unlike today, only one bridge over the river, the original London Bridge. Unlike modern bridges which are used only to cross from one side to the other, London Bridge was lined with businesses and residential dwellings, all tightly packed onto the bridge, and all with a jetty down to the river itself. These were randomly built, randomly extended, often at 90 degrees from the next jetty, and the effect was that the flow of the river was so severely impeded and slowed to such an extent that it gave the freeze a helping hand. Experts today doubt that the river would have frozen over to such a severe degree had the Thames been able to flow unimpeded, especially as it a tidal river and has a fair degree of salinity in the area in question.
Kind of a cool list below to help with research and some will buy a air conditioner for global warming and some will buy a stove to heat their home in an emergency like we had in Texas. One thing to remember is how cold it got after just Mt. Pinatubo erupted in a big way. Now we have 52 of them without including Iceland yet but they had 10,000 earthquakes last week. Iceland may threaten air travel again but some experts say that particular one but just have a bunch of lava going to the sea over major highways there.
Haven't done a lot of research on the River Thames since I'm heavy into research on Pilot Mountain in Surry County in North Carolina. However, I do remember reading it was about 18 inches thick when the elephant walked from shore to shore. Bridge position on ice thickness I don't think would have any impact like that whatsoever. I'm from Michigan and used to go ice fishing with a car a mile out in Saginaw Bay. Interesting with the poles moving how Antarctica is having ice form over the ocean which is pretty salty.
An expert is someone who says he is an expert and you agree. I'm no expert, but like to get deep into research. In todays propaganda filled news it is best to pull out key words and do you own research.
Many in the G.S.M. field are wondering where the glacier is going to form with this "new type of snow" that is like sleet that forms huge piles of ice? That really weird snow/ice combo will melt slowly but not completely so each year it will build somewhere. We haven't seen it yet but will soon (imho).
"Winter is coming," is just a Game Of Thrones fictional thing, right Texas? It ain't the end of the world but a two week ice storm is something to deal with is all I'm saying. It is a good time to be your brother's brother rather than keeper. At the end of the Maunder we had the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights.

Texans should prepare for cold and Hot weather. And superstorms (since warmer average air temperature holds more water and brings a deluge when it visits). Weird weather is the name of the game. What has changed independent of your solar maximums and minimums is a shit-ton of fossil fuels being burned since the industrial revolution. It’s a whole new ballgame. Global Warming is not a natural process in this current example we are living in; there has never, ever been such a rapid increase in the Carbon ppm in the atmosphere of Earth. Life as we knew it will never be the same. Houston will flood again and again, since it is built on a flood plain. So is Sacramento. Louisiana & South Florida will continue to be claimed by the ocean. This process is well under way already, as measured by LA’s sinking land and “nuisance tidal flooding” in FL. Greenland’s melting ice has halted the Atlantic current which kept Europe warm in the winter. Therefore Europe will see a mini ice age, compared to the average over the recent 1000’s of years. And the planet on average will continue to rapidly, drastically heat up, as it has been since the Industrial Revolution. 100 year and 500 year storms will roll around frequently and rainfall records will be broken broken since warmer air holds more water, which makes Atmospheric Rivers deliver more water than the Amazon does In real time. We have seen this in Seattle. Tipping points have been reached. Environmental Disaster awaits us in every region. In the Southwest and India, the Heat will make it very hard to live there, combined with drought. It sucks to be tight, in this case. Scientists have been missing the mark, truly. They have vastly underestimated the timeframe of Environmental Catastrophe affecting the people of the world, The advanced degree with which the consequences of burning fossil fuels will affect us all will result in an Economic Crash, probably within months or a few short years. That expensive house you would like to buy will be much cheaper in the future. Values will plummet based loosely on geography. Miami will be worthless sooner than anyone is willing to say, as the ocean moves in on high rise real estate near the beach. I want to walk like a Giant on the land and fight this enemy, but it is too late, and the only giants are Corporations and Oil Companies. The people may yet stand and fight for Mother Earth, beyond the water protectors. The Natives and allies know what is at stake.
Yes, insulate your pipes. Buy Tesla batteries & solar panels. Get ready for punishing weather, hot and cold. Kiss the sky, as we have known it, Goodbye. We have set a process in motion which will bring about the 6th mass extinction on Earth, historically speaking. The Anthropocene is the climate chaos, caused by humans. Alas, we have traded away our children’s days. Politicians in the pocket of Corporations and Oil Companies have kept the people blind. Trump is a planet wrecker but they come in 2 colors: Red, and Blue. I am sorry to bring you this peccenistic prediction, but Bad News is coming to town. Who’s Gonna Stand Up and Save the Earth? Alan in Seattle
@ Jim - thanks for all of the details here.
In our lifetimes, we have personally observed the weather and climate shift dramatically from historical patterns. The debate of whether this is natural or unnatural is a vital debate.
we think Neil had it about right back on 2013 tour and his song which we discussed @ Yes, There's Definitely A Hole in The Sky.
i searched out my companions, who were lost in crystal canyons..
@ Hank - nice. so nice in fact that we've re-captioned. thanks! :)
