Comment of the Moment: "Toast" - A Roadstory by Neil Young
“It's got everything that the best Crazy Horse albums have had.” - Neil
Last week, we covered the news that Neil Young had shared some deeply personal feelings on the unreleased 2001 album "Toast" with Crazy Horse.
Similar to the long unreleased album "Homegrown" - which Neil felt was too personal to release back in the 1970's -- "Toast" it seems was also too personal to release. Neil writes:
The music of Toast is about a relationship.
There is a time in many relationships that go bad, a time long before the break up, where it dawns on one of the people, maybe both, that it’s over. This was that time.
Which brings again to the Comment of the Moment on "Toast" - A Roadstory: Neil Young Shares Thoughts on Unreleased 2001 Album by Setz:
I frequent here often but comment seldom, cause it just doesn't flow out in type as it feels.
But I can't get past the short time frame between two of Neil's albums that could maybe be the least received at release but maybe the most coherent stories he has told. It seems clear that AYP [ "Are You Passionate?"] came from deep places of love and changes within it. Tours with CSNY in between, which always has had ups and downs, then Greendale comes to light. If you're a forward person, who wouldn't want to turn up the light? Greendale shows happiness, love of family and community around the dark shadows we all deal with every day. So I wonder if there would be Greendale without AYP?
Now that we've had twenty more years of our own light and shadows, does this art become more relevant?
Thanks Setz for sharing your thoughts on "Toast". Very interesting, as others have noted.
So, would there have been a "Greendale" without "Are You Passionate?"? Good question. Of course, we'll never know and will only begin to conjecture once we do hear "Toast" someday.
We've always found "Greendale" to be very uplifting and inspiring. And maybe as you suggest, "Greendale" was a boomerang reaction to the downcast vibe of "Toast".

From a different thread, has everyone received their certificate of authenticity for Archives 2 ? Emailed Greedy Hand but their customer service is Piece of Crap ! Would love to know if anyone else is still waiting ? With Thanks.....
I live in the U.K. and have not received my certificate for Archives Vol. II.
Cheers G-Man, least it's not only me who,s getting the runaround !
I received my certificate of authenticity for Archives Vol II last week.
They had made a complete mess with my address. The only thing that was correct was my name and country, but the Danish mail company did a great job to find me.

Denmark
Thanks, you fill me with hope yet if they can only get my address right ...
I live in the UK and received my certificate last week. It was posted from the U.S. I had emailed the U.K. greedy hand prior to this, asking if they knew anything about where it was etc, having bought my vol 2 from them I assumed that they would be responsible for the certificate also. As sod's law would have it, the certificate arrived the next day. To be fair to the U.K. greedy hand, they replied quickly, (a first!), saying they would look into it. I emailed them back, out of courtesy to say that my certificate had arrived and that they needn't chase it up, and again they replied quickly, thanking me for letting them know. The fact that the certificate arrived from the U.S, with the sender being named as Neil Young, and with a California dispatch location on it, I assume that the whole roll out of certificates is being dealt with from one location in the U.S, regardless of which country's greedy hand store you bought your box from. Hope this helps! stay safe.
While the Danish mail service appears to be up to par, the US-German connection seems to be a lot slower. I am still waiting. But as someone said: "sooner or later.."
Well that's a nice surprise, so thank you! I do not wish to pick apart anyone's life to guess why they do what they do, but Neil has a unique outlet to vent it. Great respect for Peg and Neil's charitable work for others less fortunate, they changed so many lives. While trying to keep it together themselves. The strains of life on the road and away from family for both partners must be emmense. Lots of folks do it. But wait a second, I've got this little something that can combine them all, smiling, dancing, sharing a message.....
Thanks Old Black, I bought and I am dealing with US outlet so i'll wait and see what transpires but over 3 months wait, how hard is it to mail out ? Always 'Rust Bucket' to ease the wait and a lot of bigger problems in the world right now ....
Still waiting but, congrats to you who have received their certificates!
