(More on TW @ RUST BUCKET PREMIERE TODAY: "Country Home" - Neil Young & Crazy Horse, 1990 Rehearsals | NYA )
Rapturous shouts of joy continue to pour out across rustdale and into TW.
A somewhat not atypical comment on hearing and watching ‘Way Down in the Rust Bucket’:
"You ever see little kids bouncing forward and back on a couch?
That's what this record has me doing haha."
As the "Inextinguishable Scotsman" declared succinctly: "RUST BUCKET: the sound of Ragged Glory transforming into Weld."
So here is our TW Comment of the Moment on NYA FIRST LISTEN/WATCH: ‘Way Down In The Rust Bucket’ - Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse by Dan S.:
No surprise; I completely agree with Scotsman’s observations.
Like Alan, I actually like the fading between songs, as it honors each individual performance. The obvious joy that is evident here is contagious, and as Neil has said,”they were smoking some incredible weed that night”, yet every song (for me anyway) is a highlight. I can’t think of another live concert recording where every single song is a highlight, although Talking Heads, Stop Making Sense comes pretty darn close.
Without question, my favorite officially released live Crazy Horse recording. That could change with the Alchemy Box of course, as the pure joy experienced on that stage at Red Rocks on that tour was palatable to everyone there. They were genuinely happy that night, as they were on this show. Really looking forward to that release.
Neil’s guitar work is completely off the charts, with uncanny moments of contrast and relief, allowing layers of emotional intensity with a master’s touch. Vocally relaxed and confident. Nobody’s in a hurry, it’s such a relaxed and loose performance. This show also illustrates the subtle impact of Poncho. With his ability to play with grounded positivity is inspiring, always leaving room exactly when it’s required.
Billy and Ralph are both committed throughout the show, and it’s inspiring to hear the joy they both share when the pocket never waivers.
The Deluxe Edition is beautifully presented. Sturdy cardboard outer box, much like the Deluxe Return to Greendale, there is an embossed number on the back. Inside, each of the four LP’s are sealed in shrink wrap, as are both the CD and DVD. The pressings are perfect on every level, perfectly flat, and absolutely no surface noise. Thanks to Chris Bellman the vinyl mastering is remarkable, as is usual with his amazing ear for detail. The running time for the two CD’s totals 2 hours and 34 seconds, but the DVD says on the back, running time 3 hours and 52 minutes. So the pause between songs may have to do with fitting all the songs in the correct sequence on four albums, minus Cowgirl. I’m just guessing of course, perhaps it was more to do with aesthetics.
I’m looking forward to watching the DVD (although BluRay would have improved the sound quality), but we have a sick cat that needs to see a vet today. He’s 17 1/2 years old, so we may be saying goodbye to our sweet friend. Then I have to take my mother in law to get her first COVID vaccine ( she’s 88).
So hopefully later tonight I’ll have a chance to watch the whole concert.
Can’t wait.
Peace 🙏
Thanks as always for the thoughts on the Horse and the Rust Dan!
Really sorry to hear about your cat. 17 years is quite a long run. Good luck and maybe your cat has another life or 2 somewhere? And good luck with your mother in law, as well. Enjoy your Saturday night!
So -- as we often like to say to anyone who cares to listen and hear: "May The Horse Be With You & Yours!"
They'll be calling this "The Rust Bucket Miracle" long after we're gone over how the 1st concert performance of "Danger Bird" was filmed with 6 cameras and soundboard audio. Thank you L.A. !!!
As we
mentioned yesterday, somehow, we have to think that this is all part of "The Plan" given that there are
no coincidences. So somehow Neil delivers his entire catalog online
for $20 just as the world shuts down?

Brilliant. God you people have great taste in music! I read a “Ho-Hum” review from Rolling Stone and wanted to scream at the writer, who somehow failed to see the majestic Ragged Glory of the recording as we Thrasher’s Wheat regulars did not fail to behold. This may be one of the greatest live Rock and Roll albums EVER. And it matters A LOT! And here we are, sheltering in place, and it’s Raining Rust in the Neil Fandom Kingdom! Sweet glorious bliss, ear candy from our favorite Artist! It’s Rocking in Valhalla tonight! Thank you Neil Young!

@ Thrashers: First, thanks for the spotlight on comment of the moment, always humbled by the honor. Second, I want to thank you and all the others here for their kind words regarding our sweet Tigger, my wife and I were both moved by all those who reached out with love. Tigger is still with for the moment, as the vet felt that complete blood work was prudent before sending our boy off to kitty heaven. We should hear back on Monday or Tuesday. I’ll keep you posted.
Because Thrashers Wheat is my only social media website I participate on, (with the occasional review on Amazon) I find great comfort in all those rusties who visit here, as everyone here are high quality human beings. I genuinely feel a part of a special place here on Thrashers Wheat, and I want to thank you for working so very hard to keep this safe haven available for all us Neil Young fanatics. Sincerely ❤️
Peace to all 🙏
Good stuff, Dan. Sending love to Tigger.
Scotsman.
Right on Dan. I feel the same way about this on-line community @ Thrasher’s Wheat. Our cats “Bear Bear” & Todd the “Service kitten” join us in prayer for your Cat. Our old dog Jack the shiba hasn’t got too many more good years it seems. But Lyla is going strong. She got rescued from Texas. We wish you all the best. Alan & family
@ Dan - ok, our thoughts are w/ Tigger!
@ Alan - good deal. sounds like you've got a bunch of furry friends!
anyone else getting concerned about their WDITRB shipment?
I hope it's not my turn in the barrel with The Greedy Hand Store...just says 'shipped'
sorry about your cat, Dan
@jonathan
I'm concerned about WDITRB shipment.
NO NEWS right now.
The same for return to greendale from The UK STORE
3 months man. A real joke
I still cannot access the Archives after getting a free year subscription last October having bought Archives Vol II. No amount of e-mails have solved the problem. They keep e-mailing me, albeit at about 3 weekly intervals, saying I have not returned their e-mails, which I have done immediately. I now cannot order from Greedy Hand as when I go to confirm order it says my billing and shipping addresses do not match, yet they do. They claim there is no problem with the store and suggested I use another browser. I tried 3, all unsuccessfully. I give up. Neil may be a great musician but is a lousy businessman and surrounded by poor people looking to support his interests.
@G-Man - I don't have those amount of issues with the Store but I ordered a couple of t-shirts back in January...it still says 'processing'...six weeks later
I am worried now for sure about ordering anything else...although my Archives II box did arrive about a week after it's official release date last November
as has been stated here before, the loss of Elliot is clearly apparent in several recent situations
According to The Times Contrarian “Way Down In The Rust Bucket” DVD can be ordered now.
USA Greedy Hand:
Pre-order - released on: 3/12/2021
UK Greedy Hand:
Pre-order - released on: 23/06/2021
UK release date quite confusing. June 23 2021? Can that be right, or does it indicate more uncertainty from the UK store?
As a European customer who experienced the almighty mess with Archives 2 I am hesitant to order anything from the UK store again. I wonder if other European customers outside of the UK have tried to order items directly from the US Greedy Hand. If so, could you please share your experience here. I know it will be more expensive to order directly from the US branch, but if I could avoid the problems from the Archive 2 disaster I am willing to pay for it, since you can only get the DVD from the Greedy Hand.

@Kim
Archives II, Greendale Revisited vinyl, and several other vinyl packages including Judy, Visitor, Peace Trail, Fillmore East, all were ordered at the US GH Store and delivered to Germany. In most cases including Archives II I did not even have to pay custom fees, maybe that one just slipped throught without being noticed. Also the EU does not charge custom fees for goods that have a market value below 20 € (too much of an administrative effort, I believe).
As I made sure that most of the orders exceeded 100,00$ I did not have to pay for the shipment. The packages arrived one or two weeks later than the first delivery reports in the US. In Germany they are delivered by UPS. You can track their procedure through their tracking number system. My status report on the order of the Deluxe Rustbucket Box currently (03/03/2021) reads: "03/01/2021 8:00 P.M. SAN BERNARDINO, CA, United States Shipment Delivered to USPS, Package Acceptance Pending".
I am still waiting for "The Times" vinyl to arrive and "Young Shakespeare" to be released.
All previous orders arrived in perfect condition with the exception being NYA Vol.II which was slightly dented in one corner, nothing that a flat iron could not smooth over. But then, I was happy to get one in the first place, so no serious complaining. I am still waiting for that certificate of authenticity, however.
@Dionys,
Thank you very much for your very detailed and useful answer to my question. It’s a great help. As for Archives #2 I received my certificate of authenticity yesterday, so I guess yours may arrive very soon.

In The Contrarian’s Letters To The Editor today Frank NYA writes that a new Warner Brothers EU Distribution center in Germany should be opening by early Summer. Hopefully that will simplify the way items are sold within the EU making it a better and more affordable experience.
Good news indeed for customers on the European mainland.
