UPDATED: The Mystery of Neil Young's "Florida" Finally Solved
The post has been updated to include a photo from the Bill White Collection of a 1st Edition of the Tonight's the Night album package with the (in)famous "Hello Waterface" screed as well as a loopy indy news article in Dutch (of all things) printed on the little folded insert. Also, included is the transcript of what we only now know is "Florida" printed on a faded backdrop of the "On The Beach" sleeve insert.
(Thanks Bill!)

I am sitting in a seminar room, alone. Students with masks have just left. My mask is still on, just listened to "Florida" and the "song" breaks my heart. I cannot listen to "Without Rings" any longer because it too breaks my heart. I had just a moment where I think I understood what Neil meant when he said "Homegrown" was too personal or just too close to his reality. "Florida" is close to many bad things in the history of my own life. Art is not always fun. Hope everyone is well.
Abner - peace be with you in these times.
Only love can break our hearts.
But breaking brings strength.
And there is there is strength in music and friends.
"I'm waiting for a sign
I'm standing on the road
with my mind outstretched to you."
The kind expression of peace is deeply appreciated Thrasher. There was a racial incident at our college last week that was very disturbing. I reached a point of stress and exhaustion that made the song bring back all kinds of memories. I can't believe I said those things about Trump and hatred. I agree with Dan and Meta-Rocker, that is my real self. I do not hate anyone and I think true appreciation of art leads in that direction, away from hatred. These times are deeply challenging. I am glad to be doing my part, trying to do the right thing. Don't be Denied!
@Abner: You are not alone my friend. Many of us are struggling during these difficult times. The emotions you shared are welcome here. Your willingness to share those feelings helps the rest of us recognize we’re not alone. Thank you for that. Be well.
Peace 🙏
We are all without "rings".
Be the ring.
Thank you both
