Neil Young Fans Have Spoken and They Want Pearl Jam?! Archives Survey Results Posted
Toronto - September 11, 2011
Neil Young fans have spoken and --surprisingly -- they want Pearl Jam?!
Specifically, fans voting in the NYA "In The Can" survey voted "MIRROR BALL LIVE‚ DUBLIN with friends from PEARL JAM, 1995" as the #1 and #3 choice, per The Can: Survey Results | NYA.
Earlier this month, Neil Young Archives opened the polls to allow fans to vote on the New Releases Survey. And fans definitely voted with their conscience. Or did they?
In looking at the results, many are astonished that MIRROR BALL LIVE‚ DUBLIN with friends from PEARL JAM, 1995" was voted as the #1 and #3 top choices. "EARLY DAZE—Crazy Horse, 1960's" was the #2 choice.
Some have questioned whether there was some sort of Pearl Jam block voting/ballot stuffing initiative operating out of Dublin, Ireland. (See comment by Dionys -- obviously, conspiratorially minded ... j/k)
(UPDATE: More discussion on survey methodology, results and comments by Tom on Sugar Mountain below in COMMENTS.)
Other highly voted choices included:
- BOARDING HOUSE—SOLO, 1978
- TOAST—Crazy Horse, 2001
- OCEANSIDE COUNTRYSIDE—Original Studio Album, 1976-77
- FILLMORE EAST—CSNY Live Band + SOLO, 1970
- HARVEST TIME—Film of the making of Harvest, 1971
- RAGGED GLORY—CRAZY HORSE Extended Version w extra songs
3,011 votes were tallied in the survey. Some are surprised that only 3K of 25K subscribers voted, but the survey was never prominently tagged on NYA, thus low participation rate.
The other question on the NYA survey involved paying extra for exclusive video access. About 37% said they would be ok with a small fee for "on demand" access.
Here is a complete list of the nominees:
- YOUNG SHAKESPEARE—Stratford Shakespeare Theater, SOLO, 1971, FILM + LP

So what happened? No Ducks with unheard live recordings? No "Island In The Sun" or "Homefires" with unreleased songs?

That there were less than 4,000 votes -- wonderin' if that means there are fewer subscribers than needed to keep the NYA going.
Getting the NYA stream available on platforms such as Roku might help (a lot). I know that I'd love to be able to log-in there and watch the Theatre videos-- through my A/V system easier, and in much better quality, than I can muster now.
NYA has to be an act of love. There’s no way Neil is making money with it.
I do not know how the polling evolved time-wise. There could have been a scenario in which European voters got to send in their choice first, because we are a couple of hours ahead of North America. I voted on the first day and the message reached me in the early afternoon, at a time when most North Americans are still in bed. If NYA counted just the first 3000 votes, Europe might be overrepresented. So no conspiracy, more the idea of an unintentional bias?
I subscribe and have never voted in these things because I don't get emails or push notifications to remind me. (As a native app engineer for a living, let me tell you that none of this is difficult for driving engagement with the app itself and it drives me insane at how awful the Android app is)
Also, I'll keep subscribing regardless. I just don't think poll participation is indicative of subscription rates-- it's just indicative of a really bad UI/UX and really bad app development/product management/feature prioritization.
(I'm available to help, Neil. Resume available on request. Ha.)
@ Art - that's a good suggestion on NYA stream available on other platforms.
Isn't that what the BluOS is all about?

@ Chris - agree, totally, NYA is an act of love. and a song too!
@ Pabst - yep. expect a resume request any second now.
@ Dionys - we were just teasing, you know? since we get constantly accused of thinking everything is a conspiracy, why not PJ fans jammin a survey?
sort of like the conspiracy of Russians hacking the Iowa caucuses.
sort of like Jeff Epstein didn't kill himself.
sort of like Harvey Weinstein being a sexual predator.
sort of like Bill Gates (Windows virus mastermind) being behind CoronanVirus.
oh, yeah, sure. it was just unintentional bias. uh-huh. our bad.
again, j/k , ok?

From Tom on Sugar Mountain:
I'm happy with the picks. I wouldn't have put Mirror Ball Live in my top 3, but it is in my top 10. Boarding House & Early Daze & Fillmore East were my top 3. I want the Ducks, Odeon-Budokan & Oceanside/Countryside too. I assume the 1990 Catalyst Rust Bucket show is well on its way so wouldn't have voted for it.
If you peek into the PJ forums online you can see there was a bit of a "get out the vote" campaign.
I was surprised how few votes there were - 3100 or so, which means Mirror Ball got 465 #1 votes. That's really not very many.
The survey was just susceptible to being easily manipulated. Open to non-subscribers, it didn't track email or IP and it was easy to vote multiple times. Simply reloading the page after you voted would resubmit your votes. You could have influenced the entire survey with an hour of idle clicking.
In the end I think the results are very good other than the surprise of seeing Mirror Ball Live at the top. More power to the great PJ fans.
Another thing - Mirror Ball Live must be pretty much done. Neil had it listed to play in the Hearse Theater in the fall and then retracted it. That means he (hopefully) could release it and still have time & energy to prepare something else.
And as I said elsewhere - I'm more concerned with how often he releases things rather than what he releases. If he sticks with his standard 2-3-4 releases a year, he will never get through this list.
And lastly - it doesn't seem very Neil-like that he would actually be strongly guided by the results of the survey, at least for very long.
That BluOS is not what I have in mind. I'm referring to the easy-to-stream platforms that thousands (-- no: millions! -- of people are using Right Now to access their Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, CBS All-access, etc. subscriptions -- and the sound quality (5.1) and 1080P or 1080i video quality are both very very good. All that's required:HDMI cables...
Hi Thrasher,
Toms musings seem to support my ideas. My English might be passable, but it's my second foreign language so "j/k" is not on my mental abbreviation list. It took awhile to decode: "just kidding".
As I would like all of these to be released, the order in which they come out is of little concern. As long as I live long enough to hear them all. Time will tell.
Peace.
I just finished reading the new letters on NYA. I learned three important things. Homegrown coming in April, Greendale Live Album/Film coming in July, and no 2020 tour.
Peace
Trans would surprise a lot of fans that either didn't listen to this EP because of zero promotion or did hear of Neil using "electronic" voicing and jumped on the bandwagon of negative reactions without listening to the album at all.
If anything...Trans was ahead of it's time...Plus...I really want to check out this Animated Film!
What a rookie...above is my comment...lol

I didn't vote. Just wasn't payin attention that closely
I love Neil Young. I've enjoyed his music more, these days, than when I was younger, except the CSNY days. (I'm 64. I grew up with their music. It had a huge influence, as good music does! My Dad, born in 1922, loved the Big Bands. Mom, born in 1930, enjoyed folk music, jug band music, rock, pop, etc. We had vinyl records & AM radio (before AM was taken over by news radio & talk shows.)
I listened to Wolfman Jack on pirate radio with our shortwave while I did homework.
However, I really began a new appreciation for Neil Young solo, within the past 10 years.
Dan, after reading your comment, I jumped over to the letters section at NYA, anxiously scrolling to find the letter about “no tour in 2020.” I would agree, Neil gave zero info about a tour, all he definitively said was “I am not focused on playing.” The hopeful optimist in me reads into that openly. I won’t “expect anything” as Neil put it, but I will hold out hope for an opportunity or two for a small theatre show like the Paramount shows or Murat show from last year. After reading Neil’s response, I am so grateful to have tix for the Light Up The Blues show!!!
As I was driving back home, at night, along the silent forest roads of Central France when I was a student in the 90's, Weld and Mirror Ball were the cassettes I played the most. Considering how much an improvement Weld is over Ragged Glory, I'll be thrilled to hear what NY+PJ did live.
I don't mind a Pearl Jam release, but any release that does not contain "I'm the Ocean" from that era would be a big disappointment. How about if we start our own poll to ask what songs need to be added in as a bonus track???
At one point, NYA said to look out for your special, personal link to vote. I never got that -- just checked the Subscriber page periodically. Here's what I mentioned on Rust:
"Of course, I'd like it all tomorrow, but I immediately left out anything
in the last two decades. I also left out studio albums, figuring they are going to emerge anyway, in due course. Here are the ones I chose:
1. WAY DOWN IN THE RUST BUCKET—Crazy Horse Live at the Catalyst, 1990
2. ODEON BUDAKON—Odeon Hammersmith, London/Budakon, Tokyo, 1976
3. MIRROR BALL LIVE‚ DUBLIN with friends from PEARL JAM, 1995"
@ Dionys - ok, again, just playing around here a bit. no worries. thanks for understanding.
@ ALL - thanks on the LTE notes. back to business here on blog,

Democracy In Action!?
Mirror Ball really. That's one I won't be buying. It's got to be PJ fans manipulation.
Here is what the Neil/Pearl Jam album/film would look like.Looks good to me and the shows I have live recordings from are outstanding. Scenery - 15 minute plus jam. The Powderfinger versions are faster than the potr/horse versions, smokin'.Like A Hurricane blows me away. The Mirror Ball songs are so much better live than the album versions, similar to Greendale studio album/Live versions.Big Green Country,Act Of Love,Downtown,Song X,Scenery,Throw Your Hatred Down.I didn't vote for this one but I think it's a good one to have.My picks are Alchemy,Toast and '76 Horse.

@ Soldier Steve - thanks, looks like a string possibility there on Neil/Pearl Jam album/film.
Kind of amazing how much territory we've been covering here lately.
Benefit w/ Stills, 90's PJ album, 70's Homegrown, 21st century Greendale.
And now maybe CSNY?!
here we are in the years...
never a dull moment in Neil-ville.
Lots of informative comments here. Thanks!
I didn't get to vote, I heard about it late from the post here & didn't realize it was going to end so soon. They really should have emailed Archives members a link to "Vote Now".
How long was the voting live?
