'Ole Neil is being a little slippery here I think. From reading this most recent cryptic post, I think he's still just alluding to the archives web-site. I suspect as part of the launch, there will be a live compilation of the set-list that Neil posted, or it's possible that set-list is a previously recorded show (or part of one), though I haven't researched it...

Do we really think Neil's actually playing a live show of some sort on December 1st?

Yes, we really do think Neil is playing a live show on December 1st!

I suppose it's possible he'll be doing some sort of live stream on the archives web-site, but if you REALLY read his message, how can he be playing "Live from Canada and around the world to your hometown"?? He can't be in Canada and around the world at the same time, unless of course he's discovered a new law of physics...

Hey, I give Neil credit and he's certainly piqued my interest. But I know to expect the unexpected and that not all promises or statements are what they purport to be. Have we learned nothing over the last 50 years from Shakey?

Again, read his message. It's really quite vague, imprecise and maybe at least a little misleading, or maybe not...

December 1st is fast approaching, and as always:

He'll be playing live in Canada and it will be streamed around the world to all of our hometowns. (There's one more line in his Facebook post that's missing from the tweet: "Thanks to all those who will make it happen by listening and watching.")

At 11/20/2017 10:30:00 AM, Blogger Alan said...

I would not expect him to post a set list to an upcoming show, but, he may have done that. I expect it's a show he already played. But does the set list match up with any known show?! A recorded live show broadcast on the net? Least likely: Je announced his set list in advance. Alan in Seattle.

"A Dream That Can Last" has never been played live, and "Tumbleweed" was only played once (with POTR in Austria).

At 11/20/2017 03:01:00 PM, Blogger TopangaDaze said...

I admit I really have no idea what to expect, if anything.

@ Babbo: That additional line ("Thanks to all those who will make it happen by listening and watching") makes things even less clear to me! What does that mean? How would people "listening and watching" "make it happen"? If he's playing live in his studio and streaming it, he doesn't need us listening and watching to make it happen.

Good catch though mentioning that "A Dream That Can Last" has never been played. That would seem to rule out the release of a previously played concert. But again, "playing for you" could mean almost anything, as he doesn't say he'll be playing live or performing live, does he?

@ Alan: It is odd for Neil to release a set-list in advance. Very out of character and just one of the reasons I doubt his message indicates a true live performance is coming...

Yes, I'm parsing every word, but the words sort of "add up to nothing" of substance. Of course that can all change over the next few days if he tweets out information with a specific time to watch, and/or a place he'll be playing.

Hey, I'm still not confident the archives site will even be up and running on the 1st, so expecting a new true live performance of some sort is even more far fetched to me. But again, my interest level is piqued...

Amen Shakeydave, no argument from me. We'll know when we know, and until then, everything's subject to change, "but I can't say bad or good".

@TopangaDaze: "Live from Canada" seems pretty straightforward to me (and also clear that he won't be playing from "his studio," whatever you mean by that - Shangri-La?). Anyway, an announcement of the venue is reportedly coming soon; lots of speculation about Coronation Hall in Omemee, since he previously said he'll be "going to my town" that day, guess we'll see.

And yes, everyone participating in the stream will "make it happen," in a broader sense. If a tree falls in the forest ...

Hey Babbo, it sounds like you're more in the know than I am. It certainly appears Neil is doing something quite deliberate with the whole "Visitor" approach and the archives site, so I'll stop parsing his imprecise words.

Looks like he's throwing a lot out there on December 1st, and I'll be one of those listening and watching.

Massey Hall seems the obvious first guess, but I'm expecting something else. Omemee seems very possible and would be very cool as Babbo B. mentioned. He's seems to be connecting much more with Ontario than he does with Winnipeg, but that has to be a possibility too.

If Omemee, it could be hard to get there in time if it's a sudden announcement. It'll be interesting either way. I've booked the day off just in case.

At 11/20/2017 06:15:00 PM, Blogger Shakey said...

Massey Hall has no scheduled show that day which leaves it open as an option. One can only hope.

I don't see where this is confusing at all. December 1st he will play a show in Canada that will be live-streamed, and that is either the actual set list or a list of songs he's rehearsing to pick from.

At 11/21/2017 12:36:00 AM, Blogger TopangaDaze said...

Sorry, I seem to be the doubter here. For some reason I just don't see his post as a clear statement that he'll be playing a show. His words were: "I will be playing for you"..

And with the new album coming out on the 1st and the launch of the archives web-site on the 1st too, I interpret his words to perhaps simply mean we'll be able to hear his songs playing via the archives site, not necessarily that he'll be giving a live performance. If there is a "live performance", for some reason I think it will be him playing alone (without a crowd) in a recording studio or at a radio station, etc. Though, then again, he does seem to be looking back in a wistful mood, so maybe it's possible he'll play a very intimate show in his old hometown or a unique small place that holds meaningful memories for him.

The more I think about it though, does anyone think it's feasible for Neil to announce a live concert a few days before December 1st and actually be able to attract a crowd of any size to fill a place like Massey Hall? I don't, but I hope I'm wrong...

"Take my advice
don't listen to me"

PS: Sorry, I know I'm over-analyzing this, but I just can't seem to take Neil's "cryptic" tweet literally due to the imprecise language he's using...

Facebook stream of live performance is now confirmed, venue TBA:

At 11/21/2017 07:25:00 AM, Blogger Babbo B. said...

Canadian music icon Neil Young is doing a one-time “comes home” acoustic concert next Friday (Dec. 1) at 8 p.m. (ET) called Somewhere In Canada, in a yet-to-be-determined venue with a capacity of about 200.

Somewhere In Canada is being produced by Bell Media and directed by Young’s girlfriend, actress Daryl Hannah, in partnership with his Shakey Pictures. It will be live streamed in Canada on and iHeartRadio’s Secret Sessions, and worldwide on Facebook.

There are reportedly holds on a number of venues across the country that Young is fond of; he will select one sometime this week. In keeping with an acoustic campfire vibe, the venue will likely have couches and chairs for a cozy, intimate setting, making the “secret session” truly special, according to a release announcing the show.

Thanks for the link Babbo B, hopefully this words are clear enough for Topanga.
But seriously this is insane! How the hek are we gonna get into this show?! It'll be like insiders only.

At 11/21/2017 11:38:00 AM, Blogger TopangaDaze said...

Well Syscrusher, to be fair, I did say it was possible he'd be playing an intimate show in his hometown, I just had my doubts because again, his words weren't specific to me.

Okay, so the next question is: Why isn't the concert streaming on his new archives site, and/or will it be added to the timeline immediately afterwards?

And yes, it certainly looks like a friends and family type of production, not much chance (if any) for regular fans to get in, but that's okay.

Now that it looks like it's happening, I hope the set-list he posted is just a partial general framework of songs to choose from. For me, it's a little too heavy on the Storytone material (well, Daryl is directing) and a few other tunes that just aren't my personal favorites, but I understand the basic theme of the songs and why he'd choose to play them in this special format.

And I'm not complaining. I'm happy Neil has this flurry of activity coming on the 1st, and I'm thrilled he'll be playing an intimate live show of songs that matter to him in a place that also matters to him. A true "homecoming" indeed, and if it's the ending of something or the beginning of something, either way I'll enjoy it in the moment and am thankful that Neil can express and share of himself in this way.

In closing, I'm reminded of the old Jewish prayer, which loosely translated says: “Blessed are You Lord our God, Ruler of the Universe, who has given us life, and sustained us, and allowed us to reach this moment.”

don't listen to me"

He's very clever at teasing this out. Builds some buzz, speculation, especially as he's promoting Christmas sales of "The Visitor" as well as "Hitchhiker", as the intimate acoustic setting is exactly what that was. As soon as the location is announced there will be a mad rush, so he's waiting until not only the day of, but probably right up to a few hours before the show. Could already be booked somewhere under a pseudonym.

Word up here from Scuttlebutt Lodge ... Neil to play the Dominion Tavern in Ottawa 12/01.
After a full belly of maple syrup glazed venison , I got on the horn to some lads in Bytown that tell me Neil is playing the Dom !
Apparently he will also be auctioning off some of his distasteful cigar store Indian carvings and donating proceeds to the Fort MacMurray Relief fund .
Thanks Neil .... so good ta hear , you are finally coming back to Canada , your home ... Happy 150th Mr Earth !
