In advance, here's a link to a new Cameron Crowe interview primarily about Neil. Lots of cool tidbits!

And now there's DVD preorders, but no Bluray? Baffling. If Bluray is the way to go with audio for the archives, why not for his films?

Well, Human Highway was certainly an "experience". I was prepared for the goofy absurdist comedy, but the bad acid trip of the second half (the milk scene, oh god, I hope that was milk...) really made me uncomfortable, and I was vexed they completely cut down the Hey Hey My My jam, the part I was personally looking forward to! I should clarify I didn't dislike the movie either. The Q&A was alright, I really feel for that woman's struggles, and hope her son makes a full recovery. Lastly, Rust Never Sleeps was played how it should be: on a giant screen at full volume. Leaving the theater with my dad, I experienced a similar feeling to when I was leaving the POTR concert in Cincinnati, except my ears weren't ringing. That was a good night.

Saw the double feature last night at a suburban Denver multiplex. Excellent presentation, but Rust Never Sleeps audio seemed to be mixed in mono? The auditorium surrounds never came on, all sound came from behind the screen. It was a terrific mix regardless, punchy and loud, just as it should be! In Human Highway, a couple of Devo songs suffered from a strangely quiet mix - a line or two of dialogue came through fine, but Worried Man in particular was almost too soft to hear! The audio on the later Devo concert scene (with an overdubbed Come Back Jonee) and the Devo/Booji Boy/Young jam on Hey Hey My My was okay, not great. I guess restoration cannot fix everything. Glad to see, in the Between-movies interview, that Neil downplayed Dennis Hopper's weirdly off-balance appearance in favor of highlighting Dean Stockwell's contributions.

not sure this is an appropriate post but i guess someone else will decide that for me. last night on 2 or 3 occasions before and after the films there was code given for a discount on pono purchases. this was especially for those attending the event. i forgot the code. i've tried various entries on the pono site and none of them work. help? anyone?

kdennis, I had the same experience in Austin, TX. I was SO GRATEFUL that this was released into the theaters, but I was very disappointed with the sound in general. Neither films were surround sound. Honestly, they both sound either Mono or Stereo with a very narrow range. Devo's songs were so quiet (was that intentional?) that I went to the lobby and asked them to turn it up. Maybe these weren't the new mixes or transfers that with be on the DVDs, but for $16 for each ticket (we bought 5), I wish I had known that the sound was going to be so crappy.

Ps. This better be released on Blu Ray

Anyone know why Neil has completely abandoned the blu-ray format after years if championing it?

I was in Atlanta and had the same sound issues. Also, not to gossip, but did i hear him refer to Broken Arrow as his "Former Ranch"?

I had a great time last night at the HH/RNS movie event in Tulsa, and I want to send out a big "Thank You!" to Thrasher for the two free passes I was lucky enough to win in the random drawing giveaway he did for that.
Regarding Human Highway, I'd seen it a few times before, and while I've always had a fun time watching it, I don't really think it's an overall great movie. I thoroughly enjoy seeing Neil as Lionel, as well as all the other amazing actors in their various roles, especially Dean Stockwell and Dennis Hopper. But I'd say my favorite parts are Booji Boy's hilarious commentary, including when he sings Hey Hey, My My during the dream sequence, which is probably the highlight of the whole movie for me. Interesting, though not surprising, to find out in the Q&A that Neil and Devo got that song in one take.
I thought the Q&A was good, with Neil's typical, insightful and impressive answers to the questions, though not always directly answering the exact question asked, which is also typical Neil. A few memorable Q&A moments that come to my mind regarding HH are, when Neil's directing of the cast came up, and he was asked what the plan was for the film, Neil's response was "The plan is no plan". Another one was about Neil phoning cast members a couple of years after the initial filming was done, and telling them he wanted to shoot some more scenes, saying he'd been doing a lot of cutting, and had gotten the film cut down to about 10 minutes, and now all we need is a beginning and an end. One other memorable comment I recall was when Russ Tamblyn mentioned something about Neil walking around the HH set with a check book hanging around his neck on a chain, which was prompted by Dennis Hopper, who continually kept asking Neil on the set, "Where's my money?"
Rust Never Sleeps is a classic, and I've always loved everything about it (the music/performance, the set, the way it was filmed, etc...) from beginning to end. Watching RNS at the theater also brought back a lot of fond memories of the summer of '79, when I went to a theater (only a couple of miles from the one I was at last night, and saw the initial premiere of RNS, which only played here for one weekend. I still remember the huge Rust Never Sleeps banner hanging in the lobby of the theater, and it's hard to believe that was almost 37 years ago!
There was one other highlight for me last night. At the end of RNS there was a Pono testimonial type ad, and one of the very first people I saw plugging it was my Rustie friend Marilyn Miller right up there on the big screen.
Anyway, it was a wonderful experience last night! Thanks again for the free tickets Thrasher!

RNS stands alone and shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as HH. As we know Neil has these big concepts that rarely work e.g. GREENDALE after a period of time these attract cult status HH isn't one of them.
RNS is where Neil had the songs and solo of with CH all the songs out of the top draw - just played it on VHS! who needs blu ray?

Maybe Neil is now living on Sugar Mountain with Hannahs and the Botox!

I also want to thank Thrasher as I too was a lucky winner of 2 passes. Due to things beyond my control, I was unable to attend & the tickets went unused. My goal in life has always been a bullshit-free existence. Unfortunately, I'm not there yet.

Uncle Mike has left a new comment on your post "An Evening With Neil Young as 'Human Highway' Goes...":

I attended "An Evening with Neil Young" on Feb 29. The movie was fun, the Q & A was fantastic however the concert ended mid-song because the live feed was cut short by 27 minutes! Unbelievable. Theater personnel said 'there is nothing we can do; Fandango takes no responsibility and the event organizer Fathom Events offers their "sincere apologies". What a disaster.

Where did you see the show (at least most of it)?
Hard to believe that happened, and even harder to believe you're getting shafted. At a minimum I think you should be refunded (at least partially) or get free tickets to another movie.

Good luck if you choose to pursue...

Hey T,

Went to the show last night. I don't know if this happened at any other theaters around the country, but at the Cinemark in Playa Vista, CA, both films and the live interview (everything) had sound sync problems. There was a 1/3-1/2 second delay from the mouthing/singing to actually hearing what was being said/sung. It was pretty annoying to audience. I went out and alerted one of the staff, who assured me they would "fix it", but it never was.

Now the better news- I videoed the interview, should you want a copy. It turned out perfect. Let me know if you want me to get it to you. The only part I missed was the question from the audience member regarding "The Needle and the Damage Done" and her son's addiction problem, since I had to change chips in my camera.

Thanks again for the comp ticket!

-Jeff

1st, glad folks made out to "An Evening" and had a few of our questions asked by Cameron and answered by Neil.

But sorry about the sound issues.

We had the same experience out here in The Land of OZ with the audio being MONO, no surround. Pretty disappointing and wondering how something so critical got so messed up.

Well, at least a few of you couldn't really demand refunds on a free ticket. ;)
