Winterlong: "I Waited for You"

UPDATE: 1-23 @ 10:52 AM EST

Setting up Thrash-Volt to Power Thrasher's Wheat During Snowzilla Blizzard '16

Thanks to all for inquiries on how we're doing here during Snowzilla Blizzard '16. Just so folks know, Thrashette & Thrasher are doing fine. Nice and warm & toasty here at Thrasher's Wheat International Headquarters, just outside of The Emerald City, about 10 miles from The Mansion on the Hill, where the snow is piling up and the winds have begun to howl...

And we do see 2 riders approaching...

In the meantime, we've rigged up our Prius with the BESTEK 150W Power Inverter DC 12V to 110V AC Car Adapter with 3.1A Dual USB Charging Ports for Smartphones and Tablets to provide electricity from the fuel cell to our vast server farm.

As the long as the servers are running, we should be able to stay warm. We filled our Prius with a full tank of 10 gallons and have an extra 5 gallon tank on standby. We calculate we have about ~96 hours of electric generation capacity to keep us going.

Currently, 20+" inches with blowing and drifting.

We waited for you, Winterlong. You seem to be where we belong. It's all illusion anyway.

Or is it?

We will continue to blog until the power is out and battery is dead...

Due to conditions here at Thrasher's Wheat International Headquarters, we are now operating in Winterlong mode until further notice.

We will continue to blog until the power is out and battery is dead...

Now back to our regularly scheduled gonzo, guerilla bloggin'....

Lyrics to WINTERLONG by Neil Young WINTERLONG by Neil Young, ~1970 WINTERLONG by Neil Young, ~1970

I waited for you, Winterlong
You seem to be where I belong.
It's all illusion anyway.

If things should ever turn out wrong
And all the love we have is gone,
It won't be easy on that day.

Waiting to follow
Through the dreamlight of your way
Is not so easy for me now.

Half the time has passed away
Things we thought of yesterday
Come back now, come back now.

Waiting to follow
Through the dreamlight of your way
Is not so easy for me now.

Half the time has passed away
Things we thought of yesterday
Come back now, come back now.

I waited for you Winterlong
You seem to be where I belong.

This is dedicated to Marine Corporal Christopher J. Orlando and his fellow Marines.

Stars hang high above the oceans roar
The moon is come to lead me to her door
There's crystal across the sand
And the waves, they take my hand.
--Townes Van Zandt

On the East Coast of America, they are preparing for a huge storm, maybe one of the worst to ever hit Virginia, DC and the Middle Coast states. Mother Earth turns, the days are good and the days are bad, and preparations are being made to stay safe and sound.

Five thousand miles away, on the very Western end of this great Country, different preparations are being made. Twelve brave Marines took off a week ago on a training mission and never came back. On the beaches of Oahu, there will soon be a memorial for these brave American Heroes. My thoughts and prayers are with each one of them, and with all of their families--it's unimaginable what you all have gone through over the past seven days...Bless You All. I also send my condolences and regrets out to all of their friends. I definitely can imagine what so many of you are going through, because I am one with you.

I knew Corporal Chris Orlando, and had the pleasure and privilege to watch him grow up from a wonderful, smart and friendly boy to an amazing young man. My son was his friend, and so was I. It was about a year ago the last time I saw Chris, when he was home on leave. We had a chance to talk and catch up, and I was just incredibly pleased at how well he was doing. He spoke very little about himself, other than to tell me that things were going great and that he loved the Marines and being stationed in Hawaii. Mostly he talked about his family, and asked how mine was doing--not in general, but each member, including our dog. And he was there, really there, in the moment.

That's what I'll remember most about Chris. He never, ever coasted through life, but lived every second and had a huge spirit and soul. He was always friendly, upbeat and incredibly polite...polite in an utterly sincere and meaningful way, the kind of polite and friendly that just makes you feel confident in the whole human race. His joie de vivre was infectious, he was alive and aware every moment of his time here. He surfed the beaches from Nantasket to Oahu, skated the hockey rinks of New England, lived and loved life to his fullest.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family--man, what a great family he has! The whole South Shore is in mourning right now, just like many other parts of America, where eleven other stories and lives have been happening. Chris was one of the most unique human beings that I've ever met. In Buddhism, a Bodhisattva is someone who is enlightened but returns to help others. If that's true, then Chris will be back again. If not, then I'm sure he's in Heaven right now, and we'll be seeing him again either way. God Bless You and all of your fellow Soldiers...Semper Fi. I'm so very sad right now, but also incredibly proud of Chris and happy that he was part of our lives. Thank you so very much! We love you and will never forget. Gary Richard

@Mr Henry:

Thank you for your moving tribute to Chris and his fellow marines. I'm surprised at how little attention has been paid to this tragedy by the media (all forms, all political leanings).

Your personal word memories were touching, and I hope it brought you a measure of comfort as well by sharing with us.

It's really about families (of all sorts):

Families, Neil Young

When you try to bring our spirit home
Won't you celebrate our lives
In a way that's right for our children
And families

When you write your songs about us
Won't you try to do us justice
Because we want to be just like you
And your families

I see a light ahead
There's a chill wind blowin' in my head
I wish that I was home instead
With my family

There's a universe between us now
But I want to reach out and tell you how
Much you mean to me
And my family

I'm goin' back to the USA
I just got my ticket today
I can't wait to see you again
In the USA.

@Mr H - as always, your words mean more to us than you will ever know.

Here, just outside of The Emerald City, about 10 miles from The Mansion on the Hill, the snow is piling up and the winds have begun to howl...

And we do see 2 riders approaching...

We're so sorry about Corporal Chris Orlando. Gone but not forgotten.

But might there still be some glimmer of hope? Not to get too weird here, but it seems like lots of big stuff is going missing lately. Planes, boats, buildings, etc. Maybe , just maybe....

Words matter and we know that you speak from the heart where springs eternal.

@TDaze - Yes, it's really about families. From the TW family here to your family there.

Be safe. Stay warm. turn up the volume. oh, and drink plenty of fluids.
