SMS from Mark Golley at the gig:
"Holy Crap. 'Here We Are In The Years', 2'50 set, 24 minute DBTR, Bad Fog, epic Words, the new song from Farm Aid. Great intro to world of POTR."
BTW first Here We Are... since 1976 and only 15th ever.
Yeah. And at the end they did a super tight, molten heavy version of f!#ckin up!
Did they come back for an encore? (Seattle show) I was late to work so we had to leave during the applause.. They were rocking out last night, such a great show!
I've been going to Neil Young concerts for 41 years. First time I ever left early because there were so many drunk people around me and the corporate venue, with assigned seats (mine was over $100 w/fees), didn't leave me anywhere to escape to stand and watch the show. Neil and POTR were great. (Here We Are In the Years! Walk On!). The details of the drunks, the number of times they left the show to return with beers in each hand, are boring. And I'm sure they were having a good time, which concerts should be about. But lesson learned: no more for me shows in that kind of venue.
I was there last night and it was an Epic evening. I paid extra for GA standing and I was right up front. The people were friendly and the crowd was raucous but appreciative and respectful of the band. Neil's singing sounded fantastic and the band was incredible, just phenomenal. The intensity and raging fury they worked up for DBTR was astounding. Every song they played was played very well, with Lukas using some interesting leads. This band can really PLAY! Their energy is high and Neil has found a synergy with this band which makes them probably better than "Crazy Horse, Jr" (whatever that might mean). Words was brilliant. Cinnamon Girl and Fuckin' Up as the encores sounded powerful and Horseful. This band captures lightning in a bottle. Neil is having fun with this band and it shows. Neil has a Cold Fusion Reactor surging in his Chest, splitting open the Heavens with Old Black (and other Muse-channeling implements). I have seen Neil Young play 16 x or so now, including 6 Old Princeton Landing shows in '96, and this is in the top 3 performances of all time for me. Booker T in 93 also makes the list! But these young guys in Promise of the Real really sync up with Neil and Light It Up! This tour is a must see. And the material from the new album sounds better and stronger as it is now performed. They recording with little practise of the material. I think it has become a CLASSIC album and Tour, absolutely. Thank you, Neil Young and PotR!!!
Alan in Seattle
awesome show except for a few people in ga who thought they needed to talk over the show, most annoying when he did acoustic set, other then that the old man kept on rocking and seemed to have a great time. Ive seen ny many many times and this was one of the best, just wish people would shut up and enjoy the music
Long time fan but first time to see Neil live. WOW! What a performance, from the acoustic solo songs to the amazing jams ala Crazy Horse days! There is not another guy his age on the planet to sound that amazing 50 yrs later! Rock on Neil Young!!!
I've never been to a bad Neil show, but this tour is one you should not miss. There's no way Neil can cover his entire catalog in 2 to 3 hours, but this show had a wonderful sampler and the Promise of the Real is a superb band executing some of its own takes on this great material to jaw dropping results.
The new The Monsanto Years material holds up very well live.
For me, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere -> Love & Only Love ->Cinnamon Girl ->F*ckin' Up ended the show perfectly and left me higher than a kite in Tibet.
