Neil Treasures....
A couple weeks ago a good friend of mine, Mike Davis, and I were meeting up to go to see Alice In Chains at the Ryman in Nashville.
Mike is the manager of House of David recording studio in Nashville. He invites me in to give me a tour of the studio. It was very cool. Then he asks me to help him move a piano that was in front of a cabinet. He said that inside the cabinet there was something I'd want to see. (he knows how much of a Neil-fan I am)
In this cabinet are reel tape recordings of Neil's from his January 1983 sessions at the House of David studios, where he recorded some of his Old Ways albums. True Neil Young fans know that he records everything and keeps everything - Archives Volume 1 is a great example of that. So I was really surprised that these were sitting there. Mike said it'd be ok take pictures and share with Thrashers Wheat and all their followers.
These recordings included the following songs: My Boy, Silver and Gold, Depression Blues, Old Ways, Real Cowboys, California Sunset, Dance Dance Dance, and Soul of a Woman.
Mike explained that 32+ year old tape could not be listened to "as-is", and that they'd need to be "baked" first. If not, they'd pretty much crumble when played. When he gets a chance, he will do that and we'll give them a listen. Can't wait!
So I'd like to share pictures of all this with the Thrasher Wheat followers. I hope you all enjoy. And another big THANKS to my friend Mike Davis, who let me see these (and maybe hear them some day too!).
FYI:
House of David is owned by David Briggs. Not Neil's David Briggs (whom we lost in 1995). But Neil has worked with this Nashville David Briggs. It was documented in Jimmy McDonough's book, Shakey, that Rolling Rolling Stone magazine had an obituary for Neil's Briggs, but had Nashville's Briggs photo.
Here is the excerpt from McDonough's book, and the following link is to another story about the same matter.
Hope you enjoy - Scott Waller.
(a funny coincidence - Pegi Young and Elliot Mazer were at House of David just last week, Mike informed me)
Thanks for sharing the memories Scott! A real journey through the past.

I should think that Neil would want to possess and bake those himself, wouldn't he?
I think that these are safety studio copies. Anyway a very interesting piece of information.
So Tired.
A tape from these sessions was delivered to Geffen Records and rejected. I have noted that Winter Winds/Turbine isn't included in the safety masters, though allegedly recorded during these sessions. So just an outtake...
So Tired.
@wardo - one would think and hope if not already.
@So Tired - thanks on noting "Winter Winds/Turbine". Now that's some rare tracks that hopefully see the light of day on NYA #8.
Thanks Scott for your findings! I don't know if you can answer to these questions.
In your opinion, how many Old Ways tapes are stored at House of David? Are the safety masters boxes (reel 1 and 2) shown in these pics the same boxes including the multitracks (My Boy and Soul of Woman ). Actually the Soul of Woman title isn't included in the safety masters titles. If the same boxes, is there a third box including Soul of Woman and other songs? I know that more songs were recorded during these sessions.
Thanks.
So Tired.
These are some things that you hope that you find when you start packing up your work space! Haha! I'm sure I don't have anything quite as memorable or valuable, but memories are aplenty in my office!
