I am disappointed to see that Gary Clark, Jr. didn't win in the best rock song category. It was nice to see "Psychedelic Pill" getting nominated which shows that Neil and his band are still relevant.
That's a nice photo of Mr. & Mrs. Young.
... yup, I called it! Neil fires up the jet plane to fly family and friends to pick up his trophy, thought he hated awardS???
We have a shister here folks.
Urban Dictionary Definition, Shister: "One who speaks bullshit fluently in order to fool people out of money or other possesions, often associated with used-car salesmen"
Jason Smith
hey Jason,
Actually, a Websters will do if you have the correct spelling. I believe the accepted term is "shyster."
And considering his long list of nominations and short list of no wins, I would say that his attitude about awards is no different than what most people think. No one volunteers for "rejection."
So if you read somewhere in Shakey or his autobiography that he "hates" awards, consider looking at it from his perspective -- persevering as an artist who doesn't need validation from this same industry that spits out "talent" like cheap toys made in China.
It's an Angry World,,,
... so Mother Nature you are saying that if Neil would win a trophy his attitude would be positive to the awards?? I could not agree with you more!
Jason Smith
I believe Neil's attitude towards anything changes with the cycle of the moon.
What he says one day is different to the next.
"Remember, I might remember it all differently tomorrow."
... good summary Anon, he will more then likely tell the Natives to "Punt" tomorrow.
Jason Smith
... punt, so he can stay disease free!
"I don't think I got laid for f---in' years after I got into rock and roll. I think I was in Fort William when I got laid. Me and a nice little Indian and a deejay. The first time was not really that great. at least I didn't get any diseases. So it was good." - Neil Young
Jason Smith
Great post about another perspective from a member of the tribe Neil was raising money for. "I feel today that the gamble that our leaders have taken with our corporation and the livelihood of our members is reckless. At this point I am not sure if it was worth the half a million dollars we got for litigation from the tour. That will remain to be determined.
I regret that this tour, and some statements by Neil, that has such potential to shed light on our situation and bring understanding to the complexity of our circumstances, has instead insulted and offended not only those oil industry partners who have conducted business in a responsible manner, but also the municipality of Fort McMurray, and not least of all the hard-working people who make a living in this industry."

Yeah, as Neil jets from Los Angeles to Nashville spraying all manner of toxins across the sky for his gazillionth time, he lays the blame squarely on the shoulders of the tar-sands workers whom, to paraphrase Neil, he can't get behind because they're digging a hole so deep his grandchildren won't be able to get out of it. Cough, cough.
... great to hear your point of view Anon. Although I am not native, my adopted sister is and I live beside a reserve in southern Alberta so I do hear about the real issues of the average native (not the privileged class natives).
It is one thing to play the mad scientist in Neils own personnel life and Craft, it is another to play mad scientist with hard working peoples lives, law abiding corporations and native groups.
Neil's music, books and videos do not sell anymore so it is all about pulling down his pants to get the attention required to make Money. At Any Cost!
Neil will hide at his estate, hide behind his handlers, family and hard core fans (who will attempt to explain away his actions).
A 19 year old in a 70 year old body. Just ask Graham Nash.
Jason Smith
@Jason - thanks for all of the thoughts on all of the threads more or less saying the same thing.
How about stick on topic? This thread is on the Grammys.
Feel free to have it on say the thread on the subject @ http://neilyoungnews.thrasherswheat.org/2014/01/open-letter-prominent-canadians-support.html
Also, please specifically state exactly what you're doing to help out. Not what NY should/shouldn't do. It so easy to bash. But leading by example, now that's revolutionary.
As for us? Well we did drop something to help out the ACFNLDF.
@Anonyman: 1:21 pm. I think it's wonderful that Neil took the time to shed light on a very complex situation that has spun out of control since the tar sands opened for business. If anyone took offense or felt offended by Neil's comments, actions, or tour, it's possible they are acting out of guilt for the irreversible environmental damage they have caused and by taking the path of least resistance ignoring the long term consequences of stripping away the boreal forest in that area.
@Jason, It's my observation that Neil receives validation as an artist "intrinsically" through intangibles like artistic freedom. Any "extrinsic" factor like awards and recognition would not make him a better artist. Where are you getting your information that Neil is broke?
From Neil's Facebook page
The Chief made me cry yesterday.
At least his words did. We were talking on the phone and he told me that some of his people – The Athabasca Chipewyans, the people of the willow – are afraid.
Worried about the looming battle with Big Oil, corrupt government and the morally bankrupt forces of capital extremism.
Many of the people, it seems, would rather things just stay the way they are. Status quo. The Chief understands. He is a very wise man. He told me this – please understand the word home here means the homeland – the one we’ve never seen. The one the earth-movers took away:
“We have been away from home for so long that many of my people have forgotten how beautiful it was.”
Take heart. Stand your ground. Hold on to one another. We are with you. Together we are a powerful force. We will not falter.
Honour The Treaties.
... Thrasher, to me this thread is about Neil's opulent lifestyle, burning fossil fuel like an out of control junkie in order to "hopefully" receive a trophy while criticizing the same industry he is feeding.
I bet that Indian couple that works in the Oil Sands, who has a child with cerebral palsy, feels the same!
That is what makes me cry!
Jason Smith
"Psychedelic Pill" was probably shunned due to the title/album motif celebrating 60s drug culture...
To boot, Jason Smith is a straight up dummy, who's comments are meandering and without any thought basis.
Neil travels because he has to, just like anyone else who does so for work. The fact that there are not zero-emission planes is just a circumstance of time. If Neil could bike there he would...
I presume when Neil plays Tel Aviv this summer he's gonna be super foul to Prime Minister Netanyahu and yell at him that it's time to treat the indigenous people of Israel like real people. I can hear the rage in his voice already. No Jewish paymasters for Neil. Nuh-uh.
Save your tears, Jason, for the families who don't have a choice where to live and whose economic mobility is defined and determined by others. Families who are told where, when, and how they raise, house, educate, and support their children with and without disabilities. Families who have no protection against environmental abuses or safeguards from related health issues.
Neil's facebook entry is a bunch of hokum wrapped in noble schtick.. Their village is a couple hundred kilometers from the tarsands. Only 10% of the tribe live there. They don't look out their window on them. They do look out on uranium mines though. But that doesn't fit Neil's agenda. Cleaning up uranium mines isn't as sexy as a fight with Big Oil I think the chief was trying to tell Neil politely to back off. But Neil's gonna have a fight for his own ego purposes using that tribe, whether they want it or not.
Oh, and Neil chooses his profession every day. Flights and all. His lame excuse that he sometimes has to fly between tour dates to be in good enough shape to perform is super lame. Other than festival dates, he sets his own dates. He could allow time to bike there, with all his gear on his back. Ha!
At least everyone here seems to agree, burning fossil fuels is bad for the planet. Though I wouldn't go as far as hating someone simply because they fly on planes.
Throw Your Hatred Down, or at least reserve it for the people who created this world we live in, not the people who are trying to do their best in the world in which they find themselves.
I believe Neil is doing pretty well when compared to other humans that make 7 figures or more and he lives in respect of Mother Earth, unlike the people he has been campaigning against.
Syscrusher
Sorry to be so off topic Thrasher, I thought I was reading about the Grammy's but when I got to the end I realized...
@ regular stairs - interesting perspective on the rejection of PP. hmmm. maybe so.
And LZ was a paragon of virtue while on tour, we hear. ;)
While that may be a valid point, it would be -- dare we say the "H" word -- that LZ's grand trail of destruction lifestyle is a better image to project over PP's drug image (which was about as minimal as you get)?
@Jason - as we suspected based on your reply, you have contributed exactly zero to making the world a better place. Criticizing folks is easy but stepping up takes courage.
@Syscrusher - Throw Your Hatred Down. exactly. thnx
... Regular Stairs, I was waiting for the name calling, that's what people do when they hate what they hear but have cannot disagree. I understand you are a fan and you may have even been the one that used Neil Young and Jesus in the same sentence. That's what scares me!
Mother Nature, I know natives that choose to live on reservations, ones that choose to live in towns and cities, ones that choose to go to colleges universities, choose to work in the oils sands, choose to work in construction, mining computers....
Are you really saying that you feel natives are too stupid to have made these kinds of choices?
Are you saying that the native couple, with the child that has cerebral palsy, was not smart enough to make the decision to work as an engineering technician job making 100k+??? To make a better life for their child and buy all the stuff that gives the child a better quality of life???
Are you one of those that would rather have the natives wards of the state or indentured servant's to the Native elites?? Did you think Neil was "Cool" banging a little native girl and then gloating on how he rolled the dice and did not get any diseases??
Thrasher, I have not bashed anyone, simply stating facts. People get sensitive on this board because Neil is a hero to them and I don't have a problem with that but when I hear people talk about Neil and Jesus in the same sentence I get nervous.
Neil is an entertainer, the music was irrelevant years ago, it is now all about the circus side show, but hey, everyone has to make a living.
JMHO
Jason Smith
jason smith, you are nailing it, and nailing your detractors. keep up the good work, and bring yur diatribes to thrashers wheat, and "the passenger"
Thrasher, I don't know where the line is, when cutting people off where they obviously have an axe to grind (regardless of their inability to employ logic in the process), meets up with censorship, but like the LWW comments that came out of the woodwork, obviously there are people showing up here who are not fans on, you know, an appreciation site, whose only objective is to muddy the waters because their view of the world differs from Neil's. A lot of times it's hard enough to take from people who obviously know Neil, and at some point actually did appreciate him, but this other brand of individuals are showing up for reasons just the opposite of appreciation. We’ve had this discussion over and over again, ad nausium, that Neil is not perfect and it’s alright to call him to account in legitimate ways, but these people know precious little about Neil, other than the fact that his views threaten their interests.
It's pointless to engage them with anything resembling reason or logic to counter their braying about things like hypocrisy, because by definition trolls and apologists for vested interests are not interested in anything other than mud slinging to justify their transparency. I don't envy your dilemma in having to tread the line, but I support you in taking whatever action you deem necessary. I'm not an advocate for censorship, not when the discourse is reasonable, on topic, and not a subterfuge for a hidden agenda, but I've about had it with these saboteurs. They don't have to like Neil, or agree with everything about him (I certainly disagree with him here and there), but they don't need to be doing what they're obviously doing, either. I learned a long time ago not to get into it with them, and am not about to start up again now, but I'm tired of wading through the inanity to get to comments of actual substance.
A Friend Of Yours
Jason, Sorry but I don't make assumptions about people's condition in life. I was referring to the recording-breaking tribal complaints and lawsuits against the Canadian Government and Providences for ignoring human rights abuses committed against children at-risk in First Nations communities, on an off the reservation, for addictions, lack of suitable housing, poverty, unemployment and one of the highest suicide rates in the developed world.
Instead of accusing people of saying things they did not say or making assumptions about people about whom you know nothing, why don't you take a little break from your anti-Neil hypocrisy campaign and watch something that will make you laugh?
Oh, hiya Greg. I always appreciate your thoughtful suggestions.
Jason Smith...what's wrong with you?. I dont think anyone has all the answers to resolve roadside fuel and the tar sand crisis but its time everyone starts asking for a resolve! Till then we all do what we have to do, drive what we have to drive and fly where we have to fly. But... we all need to speak up and try to change what needs to be changed or at the very least support those who have the balls to try ~
Amen brother!
Interestingly, from what I read this was Led Zeppelin's first Grammy win. In '70 they were nominated as Best New Artist and lost to CSN .. since then they got a lifetime grammy and some songs were placed in the Grammy Hall of Fame (whatever that means) but they'd never actually won a Grammy ... my opinion, having been a bit more focused on the Grammys these past few years since Neil's been nominated, is that having artists like Neil Young and Led Zeppelin out there without Grammy's kind of devalues the Grammy's themselves and therefore as these acts get into their twilight period the institution is motivated to give them a victory, if not for their own ('ie' je Grammy's) significance ('ie' its self serving) ... call me a bit skeptical but the awards are not really truly about who was best but more about who is best politically positioned for the award ... in that vein I also think they've basically missed the boat on Neil but it kinda doesn't matter, I truly doubt he or his fans care ... but with respect to this year this was their chance to bring Led Zeppelin into the Grammy's tent and for my money that's why I think they won.
oh, and Jason Smith, we get it, its an angry world ... but like, whats your agenda here? I don't sense you've won over anyone to your way of thinking and saying the same thing over and over don't make it so ... give us something thoughtful to think about and discuss, thoughtful dissent seems welcomed, trollish, sophomoric obsessive rants are a bum trip and probably put Thrasher, as Greg so eloquently said, in a tough bind ...
RIP Pete Seeger. Souvenir. Love
Thrasher,
As much as I have a dis-taste for what Jason Smith has to say, I hope we do get into censorship on this board otherwise we become just like "Them".
He does create a bit of an edge on the board and he has not used obscene language or made any personal attacks on individuals.
Anyway, this is your show. As always, great job with this site!
@A Friend Of Yours - thanks as always for the level, measured comments.
As long as we have readers like you, we'll manage somehow.
As a long time reader, you know these folks like Jason come in waves with some Neil controversy like the Tar Sands, never to be seen again.
@Dan - you're probably right about what's really going on with Grammy voting. These awards, like Oscars often have little bearing on "quality" but more on politics, paybacks, punishments, examples, and the like.
As we said, the Musicares award in 2010 is really a crowning achievement in our eyes, more so than any other award.
Neil knows he's done the right thing and doesn't need the affirmation one bit.
btw, catch his speech at the Engineers award last week? Very classy hitting all the right notes by saying when he wins, they (engineers) all win. He was truly sharing the moment with audience/peers.
