First, to everyone attending this weekend's Bridge School Benefit Concerts, have a wonderful time.
If you've attended before, than you know what to expect. If this is your first Bridge trip, then you have much to look forward to. So open your heart and let the magic of music and love flow.
If you've ever attended a Bridge School Benefit Concert, then you know what to expect. Lots of great music, lots of good friends and all for a wonderful cause.
Bridge School kids interview Neil Young
There are many, many things which strike us after attending the Bridge School Benefit shows over the past years. Yes, there are the friends and music. The Bridge Benefit Concerts are not really so much a Neil Young concert, but much more a celebration of a diverse range of bands of up and comers.
We all say that it's all about the Bridge kids every year. Not the music but the cause. And you just can not come away from the weekend just totally in awe of the spirit and strength of these kids and their families. The struggles they face make our problems meaningless, although that don't make them go away.
"One Of These Days" - Bridge School Benefit Concert 2010
It really isn't possible to express how these concerts leave an impact on a whole another level, much of which traces directly to what Neil & Pegi have done with the Bridge School, the kids, the parents and the artists. At the end of the 2 day concert -- after some 16+ hours of music -- everyone is pretty much drained and spent by the time Neil & Pegi take their final bows. Much of the 15,000+ crowd has long gone, leaving a dense crowd of die-hard Neil fans down in the lower sections first dozen or so rows. And Neil & Pegi see who has remained and realize briefly that what they look out on are the extended family of the global Neil community. And for a moment they often are at a loss, just saying "Thank you, Thank you, Thank you". They feel our love and we feel theirs. And it is good.
And so we say to all of our dear friends, the kids, all of the artists, and Neil & Pegi, "Thank you".
The photo above of Neil and Pegi Young at the conclusion of the Bridge School Benefit Concerts last month says more than we could ever put into words. Jill "Sweet Sweet Smile" Gottlieb-Seagraves's photo of Pegi & Neil captures in an instant much of the love and warmth that permeates the weekend's festivities. As many of you know, spending a few days out in Northern California with good friends and good music is a therapeutically soothing experience that -- for us -- lasts long after we finally return back home to our regular lives. Seeing all of the performers interact with the Bridge kids and watching their heartfelt reactions is truly gratifying and soul enriching.
As Eddie Vedder said at the Bridge concerts : "The kids are the teachers. We are the students."
So sorry you are unable to attend this truly awe-inspiring event. My husband & I have been going for the past 4 years & are now true believers in the cause and the music. Of course, Neil is always great, but the love that radiates from that stage is what warms my heart.
Regardless of where you stand on any of the numerous issues Neil gets involved in, everything he & Peggy have done for the kids in the Bridge School will always be his legacy in my mind. God Bless Neil & Peggy Young.
I'm fortunate to live a short distance from the venue. This will be my 21st show. It became an annual event/occasion many years ago. The price is right and the shows are a true love fest. Artist genuinely look forward to coming and playing and they are just as big of a fan of Neil as any of us.
But the kids make the difference. They make it more of a celebration than just a concert. The artist do their best because they are having fun. It is contagious.
My only wish is that the ticket sales be held differently. Each year it gets harder and harder to get seats rather than the lawn. Id like to see those that donate $100 or more to the Bridge School get first choice with a limit of two tickets. Just a thought. The scalpers are making money, not the School.
@ Ron Connolly - thanks for stopping your way too much information thought process before we all had to wonder if TW had gone all weirdo porn on us or something.
Will any oil be necessary to make this year's Bridge concerts a success?
I have faith in the younger generation's oil habits. Many have moved to cities with good public transit and don't want cars, don't think they're that cool, unlike Neil the Loner who worships the car. They're way ahead of him on this.
I will be watching the webcast after I feed and walk a couple of dogs whose owner is going! Will see Neil's opening set than go care for them. Some TVs and video players have built in wifi. My Blu-ray player (Oppo BDP-930 has the ability to access internet and has You Tube as one of the preset sites. Very easy to set up, sigened onto YOU Tube via computer and got a pop up window that a device was trying to access and just had to put in the password that was displayed on my TV screen. Signed on for the 1st time yesterday-so stoked to get to watch it on a decent size screen with audio going though my audio system. Enjoyed watching Rustfest Powerderfinger at OPL. Will be warm and cozy...I wish they would move it to an indoor facility...People with Reynaud's syndrome don't tolerate cool weather well.
I really enjoyed the concert it was great!!!! Neil and Peg make a wonderful couple!!! They look so cute together. The way these two look at each other, you know they are in love. They have done a tremendous job keeping the school going, and have done so much, is there a humanitarian award out there somewhere for Neil and Peg?
