Uncut Magazine Editorial on Neil Young's Audience: Walk Like A Giant
August 2013
The latest issue of Uncut Magazine has an editorial reflecting on Neil Young and Crazy Horse's recent Europe tour gigs.
"Neil Young: Walk Like A Giant" by editor Allan Jones, directly addresses much of the audience disconnect that we've been documenting for years now here on Thrasher's Wheat -- most recently on The "Geffen-Like" Reactions to Dublin Concert of Neil Young & Crazy Horse. In fact, the Uncut editorial by Jones could've been written by us in reaction to the comments we often see here.
Last week started on an absolute high when Neil Young & Crazy Horse’s Alchemy tour rocked up to London’s 02 Arena, turbulence in its wake, some of the crowds they had recently played to evidently unhappy with aspects of the band’s current set, notably the long jams around the songs they are playing from last year’s Psychedelic Pill, especially “Walk Like A Giant” and the extended feedback cacophony of its final 10 minutes, which was spectacularly brutal. Audiences in Birmingham and Newcastle had been from all accounts clearly agitated. In Dublin, a couple of days before the London show, there had been boos, which perhaps hasn’t happened to Neil since he took Trans on the road in 1982.And so it goes.
Uncut reader Paul Horton went to the Birmingham gig and was sorely disappointed. Like similarly disgruntled commentators in Newcastle and Dublin, he bemoaned the fact that Neil and Crazy Horse hadn’t played any of the songs he had expected to hear. He cited examples of Neil’s ‘great music’ like “Southern Man”, “Alabama”, “Only Love Can Break Your Heart” and “Old Man”, which Paul seemed to suggest should have been played out of some kind of servile obligation to fans, as if Neil has ever felt ‘obliged’ to do anything apart from what to him at any given moment is important. That the songs he wanted to hear weren’t played Paul described as “shameful”.
Remaining editorial here with a few tour videos. Or save yourself some time. Watch the videos and judge for yourself.

Didums Paul, you and those damned BBC radio people playing Heart Of Gold, you need a good doze of RE-AC-TOR up your ass.
yeh shove ragged glory up your ass too
Seriously!! This has gone on too long, what did paul or anyone else expect from a NY&CH gig?? I'm a Neil young fan first, I've always liked some of the crazy Horse stuff,so I knew exactly what I was going to see and hear on the night in Dublin. Listening to people moaning about it is so frustrating, some silly 20 year old whingeing on the way out that he didn't sing heart of gold, give me a break!! I would have loved to hear it myself, but I knew that wasn't going to happen before I got there!
Dublin was fantastic,From where I was standing, the people around me thought so too. They are Legends.
Sugar Mountain org tells us about the statistic likelihood of those songs being played:
- Only Love Can Break Your Heart last played on the Freedom of Speech Tour in 2006.
- Southern Man last played on the CSNY Tour of 2002 (never played with Crazy Horse since 1976 except solo acoustic in 1997).
- Old Man last played on a few shows as an encore on the Twisted Road Tour in 2010 before that with the electric band, except in 1976 and a very few times in 1987 never to be heard on a Neil Young And Crazy Horse concert.
- Alabama, now that one is great: Never played since 1977 (once) and before that only ever played on the Stray Gators Tour of 1973! That´s almost as crazy as demanding Bob Dylan to play Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands (recorded in 1966, never performed on stage).
To me, it's not really about what audience members "expect" or "don't expect". I agree that you should do some homework before you go to a show to determine what type of gig it is likely to be (especially with Neil) and you should fully expect that Neil will play some of his newer material. But this should not obscure a basic point: Walk Like a Giant is a mediocre song, and the 10-minute thrash-athon at the end is not that enjoyable for most people to listen to. It's not really good music; it's just thrashing. So, I don't really blame people for saying: "Hey, this isn't very good music." It does these people a disservice to simply retort: "Well, you just want to listen to Heart of Gold" all day. Actually, no, we want to hear good music, whatever form that might take.
People who criticize are often right.

You people moaning are not NY fans try buying some of his latest albums or reading set list from sugar mountain before you buy a ticket, then his real fans would get a chance to buy a ticket instead of you walk out moaning minnies. Keep on rockin NY and it's to late for you change and you dont need to.
Why dont you and a hope you chock on it
I hope these unhappy people not go and make it easier and cheaper for rest of us who love Neil especially today than my yesterdays.
Hey, Neil fans, what's with the aggression? I truly feel sorry for the non-fans who expect Neil to play a greatest hits set. I hope a hole in the sky appears and a miracle occurs: a miracle that all the misguided non-fans are enlightened and will next start complaining that Neil doesn't do "She's always Dancing". Then I'll talk to them kindly. For now, i won't talk to them at all.
There is this thing called the internet... You can push a few buttons and check out what Neil is doing before you buy a ticket. He only about 100 shows since he started this tour in the states last year.
Alabama, Southern Man? You folks just don't get it. Plenty of old CH tunes I would love to hear, but one can dig a bit deeper than that. Unimaginative people come up with unimaginative complaints.
The songs Paul listed are almost all Stray Gator songs Not Crazy Horse. Little problems with Stray Gators for the uninformed wanting that music . Jack the keyboard player dead, Kenny the drummer dead, Ben the steel player Dead , Tim the base player in a wheelchair. So for those waiting for that Alabama, Old man , Heart of Gold , Words tour . You may be waiting a long time . As many have said research people before you buy a ticket come on .

"You don't learn much when you start to get old" People looking to relive their youth. Neil, thank God, is NOT a nostalgia act. A best of CD is a lot cheaper than a concert ticket.
>> there had been boos, which perhaps hasn’t happened to Neil since he took Trans on the road in 1982.
...... i was in the audience @ McNichols Arena when "an accoustic evening with Neil Young" came to Denver in '82. I didn't hear any boos, but did hear audible gasps (mine included) when the lone man on stage w/a wooden guitar put on the sunglasses & plugged in ol'black.
.......... caught the 4th show of CHNY/Alchemy @ Red Rocks last summer, loved it ...... & would like to see'm again, now that they've been working it over for a year.
......... Hey Hey, My My
With all due respect, this dingbat “reader” Paul needs to get a grip on himself.
Neil should play a two hour version of “Love and Only Love”. I’d be good with that!
Shameful? The only thing shameful is your review. get a friggin clue. unless hes just baiting us, could be.
Birmingham wwas astounding. Some early leavers, mainly for trains. Minority politely vocal nearing end of WLAG.
Seriously, happy and good vibe with Neil seemingly in a very good place.

Is it that there is so little happening in some peoples lives that thay have to blow big money on ANY Concert that comes to town.? and then set about demanding what thay want to hear... Save your dollars, set your own Playlist and leave the seats to people that want to attend a Neil Young and Crazy Horse Concert.(there is a clue there to what is likely to be played plus of course, a new Album to play) Fidgity people that get tanked up and talk all the way through just leave me embarrased for the performer and annoyed that they are ruining MY treat.
For me personally, Neil and the Horse were everything and MORE than I expected. THREE solid hours and not even a break for Neil while the Horse went off for sustenance and a lie down (just joking) The two Concerts I saw ij N Zed were breathtaking and phenominal. That they performed 'Pill' was just outstanding..... that THEY enjoyed every minute was for me a tremendous thing to watch and listen to.
I'm watching Neil and CH playin WLAG on TV--a concert in New York from last year...I don't GET it...WLAG? you can have it...and Ralph not using sticks? What's up with THAT? Is he OK?
P.S.-- now Neil and CH are playing RITFW with lotsa people onstage...I WANNA like Dave Grohl, but...oh well, that's the way it is with ANY Art form...
