1994 Academy Awards: "Philadelphia" by Neil Young
Both
Neil Young's "Philadelphia" received an Academy Award nomination in 1994 and he performed the song during the Oscar ceremony. Young's wife Pegi and sister Astrid sang on background vocals.
Bruce Springsteen and Young were nominated for Best Song in a film for Jonathan Demme's "Philadelphia". Bruce's nominated song was the film opening "Streets of Philadelphia" and Neil's was the closing title track "Philadelphia".
Bruce Springsteen won the Oscar award for his song "Streets of Philadelphia". In his acceptance speech, Springsteen acknowledged Young and said that the award really deserved to be shared by the other nominee's song.
Another sidenote. When Jonathan Demme first heard Neil Young's score for the movie "Philadelphia" while driving, he was so overcome with emotion that he had to pull over to the side of the road to recover.
"Here's the final heart breaking scene as it plays over the "family movies" of the characters as children. If anyone can watch that scene with this song playing over it and now be moved...well. you just don't have a heart." (Thanks for link El.)

god took john lennon but he left us neil young
Just finished watching an incredible episode of The Walking Dead. During the final scene, they had Tom Waits' song Hold On as the centerpiece, first being sung by Hershel's daughter, then with Tom singing over the closing shots. Amazing, poignant, breathtaking...sometimes music can say more than words.
It reminded me so much of the first time I saw Philadelphia and my reaction at the end, hearing Neil's song and processing all of the emotions and feelings. The combination of film or TV with the best music can sometimes be just astounding. And now I'm watching and listening to Adele sing Skyfall live at the Oscars!
It truly is one of the most moving songs that Neil has ever written. I personally get teary-eyed every time I hear it...but the version on the 2000 DVD Silver & Gold is my favorite...without the background singers it's even better...just my opinion...
I just found out something that I just cannot believe. There was an article in the Feb 24th New York Times about induction into the "Songwriters Hall of Fame" - Joe Perry and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith and Mick Jones and Lou Gramm of Foreigner are new inducties. So, I went to the Songwriters Hall of Fame site to see what they have on Neil Young and guess what? - Neil Young is not an inductee! I mean, they have John Bon Jovi in there, as well as CSN (each as individual song writers) but NOT Neil Young. Lemme see, they have Glenn Frey, Isaac Hayes, Daryl Hall, Sting, Bill Withers, Richie Sambora, and Robin Gibb, but not Neil Young?
So, if you wanna see what this fine institution is all about, check out http://songwritershalloffame.com/exhibits/eras/C1110 .
If I was Graham Nash, I would be embarrassed to be inducted into a songwriting hall of fame that doesn't include Neil.
Maybe to join, you have to go to some kind of dinner and pay for the table, like in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
The way you haunt my dreams

I'm not usually a fan of covers of Neil's songs but Mercury Rev's cover of Philadelphia is a beautiful thing.
Such a Master of so many
instruments .
Feels like listening to Sonata al chiaro di luna .
EH !
With a one way ticket to the land of truth and my suitcase in my hand.
This is my interpretation of Thrasher (Neil Young)
I could not agree with you more. Neil just might be the best ever. In my opinion in almost every category. Without Neil music would have never been the same. Listen to CSN and then listen to CSNY. CASE CLOSED!!!!
