Seeing Patti Smith for the first time in Fairfax was a dream come true. I have loved and admired her for years and years. I knew I would love it, but I had no idea how powerful and truly magical she is live....
One of the best days of my life, for many reasons, but I will stay on the topic of the thread!!
Peace, love, joy and magic to the Thrasher's and to all of you..

Anyone have any idea who the support acts will be in Oz? Would love Patti but may be too much to ask.
Beautiful rendition!

Last year when I was living up in the mountains, there were a few select pictures that I kept on my refrigerator door. These were held there by some equally select magnets: a poster for Howling Wolf and Muddy Waters playing at The Club Paradise in Memphis; Bob Dylan circa Blonde On Blonde; Homer Simpson eating a donut. A couple of the pictures stood out separately and together.
One is a picture of Neil performing and playing Old Black. It was sent to me by Thrasher awhile back and is a great shot from the Chrome Dreams tour. The other picture is of Patti and Jesse Smith from 1988. The photo is included in Just Kids. Jesse was a baby and the picture was taken by Robert Maplethorpe, Patti's great friend and soul mate. It's the last picture that he ever took of Patti.
Many times I'd look at these pictures. Sometimes it was just quickly and without really noticing them. After all, they were on the refrigerator door and that gets opened quite often during the day. But other times I'd be keenly aware of the look on each of their faces and the light that was shining within. And the funny thing about this, especially because I'm only realizing this as I write, the funny thing is that I wasn't even aware of just how much that I noticed that light. But now I am.
"...on silver wings, was pierced by celestial light: to fall from such a height, he thought, would be like entering Heaven from above."

Hey thanks for posting one of my clips from the show, I'm glad it's getting a wider audience than it might otherwise. I also shot 3 clips of Neil's show from the same area right in front of the stage - check em out if you like, here's the link to one of them. http://youtu.be/5juTeCPbRtE

A few nights ago, I was having dinner with a couple of my oldest friends. Good food and great conversation ensued. I was telling them about seeing Neil Young and Crazy Horse at the Boston Garden performance, what a wonderful and unforgettable show with so much one-of-a-kind music. How equally incredible Patti Smith and her Band were. They both agreed that it sounded amazing, and that it was just like Neil and Patti to meet, exceed and confound all expectations. One friend then talked about seeing Neil for the first time during the Rust Never Sleeps Tour. He said it remains one of the best concerts he's ever seen.
My other friend then talked about some of his trips to CBGBs, and especially going there way back in the very beginning. He saw pretty much everyone who played, says the first year was the best and has the stories and cassette tapes to prove it. He told us a great story about meeting Nico during a break, when she was performing and hanging out there. Very interesting and funny!
A couple nights later, I went to the movies with my son to see the new movie Killing Them Softly. It's a great film with superb pacing and cinematography, kind of Reservoir Dogs meets My Dinner with Andre. Acting is tops, particularly Brad Pitt. Soundtrack is especially nice, including songs from The Velvet Underground and also from Nico solo, doing Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams! Funny coincidence with my friend's earlier story and the general theme here, and this got me wondering if Patti might have been at the same show that my friend was telling us about. It was a pretty small world back then in some parts of the music scene. And Patti seems to be in just the right places both then and now. So who knows, maybe she was also there.
While I'm writing this, the television has been showing a Red Wings game from back in 1996. It's the one where Sergei Federov scores five goals, including the game winner in OT. I'm wondering if maybe Big Chief was watching the same thing, maybe even thinking about Neil and Sergei and how human beings do amazing things. And I'm hoping that he's doing well and continues to get healthy!
Here's Nico and her song. Also another completely different song with the same title, from the immortal Howard Armstrong.
