you folks need a life...seriously.

I have a better idea: don't pay any attention to setlists, don't watch any youtube video, show up to the show, and remind yourself what a concert used to be like: the surprises... those moments that make your hair stand up....

roger waters summed it up recently: "I go to all this trouble to make this enormous set so you can have a once in a lifetime experience, and you sit there watching the show through your f@!king 2 by 3 cell phone camera." if you video a concert, you are a loser - no, a 3D loser....

stick a cell phone in front of my face at a NY&CH show and you will eat it...I promise...

How do you know they are going to the show?

I'm in Australia and I can't get to any of these shows and I'm anxiously awaiting set list info.

Some of us like to see what he is playing for nothing other than personal interest and excitement.

But thanks for being condescending all the same.

@ 12:36 Anon

First off, people have been following setlists for bands since about 1965. This is nothing new.

Second, why are you reading a thread about a show if you aren't supposed to read about shows before going to them?

At 8/06/2012 12:59:00 AM, Anonymous SD said...

And what on earth does looking at a set list have to do with (a) enjoying a show, or (b) filming a show with your camera?

Newsflash: I follow Neil Young set lists and when I finally saw him live it was incredible and the best gig I've been to. He played songs I didn't expect, and didn't play songs I thought he would. Surprise - reading the set list made no difference to me whatsoever.

Roger Waters might be a genius, but even a musical genius can be an crabby asshole. They take what they do -- making rock'n'roll -- way too seriously. Oh yes, bow down to the almighty Pink Floyd so they are free to insult people who pay to see them. Funny how these uppity "my shit don't stink" rock legends like to shove it in their fan's face. They act like they're fricken curing cancer or something.

I'm just here for the music...

Have never seen Neil so relaxed and seeming to have so much fun. Same setlist from ABQ, with only one encore (no Roll Another Number). Very talkative, joking, smiling. They DID NOT mail it in by any stretch of the imagination! Knocked the new material out of the park.

Great show, the Horse was tight and having a good time. The LiveNation pukes sitting in the first (handicapped) row were annoying though. Neil showed up, but I wouldn't say the sold out audience did the same.

At 8/06/2012 03:18:00 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Walk like a giant was something like 23 minutes long. Over and over was a great encore, but left me wanting more. No Americana at all.

They sure looked like they were having fun and were in exceptionally fine form. Looking forward to the encore choice tomorrow night.

BTW, anonymous # 3, you are an condescending &*%^ole. Everyone else, I'll have some youtube video shot from the 6th row up by tomorrow.

I've never seen Neil have more fun. It was clear he's in a good spot. I left wondering, did Crazy Horse play three songs off Ragged Glory when they promoted it? They clearly play what they want, when they want. Can't wait until tomorrow!

At 8/06/2012 04:28:00 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Maybe that's a rhetorical question, but to answer it, four of the "Ragged Glory" songs were part of the standard setlist during the "Smell the Horse" tour in '91 - "Mansion on the Hill," "Love to Burn," "Love and Only Love" and "F-in' Up" - while "Days That Used to Be" and "Farmer John" were played several times, and "Country Home" once (that one, of course, was a fixture back in '76). They did not play the other oldie on that album, "White Line," "Over and Over" or "Mother Earth."

At 8/06/2012 04:51:00 AM, Blogger Mr Henry said...

I saw two shows early in the Smell The Horse tour, less than two weeks apart. Four songs from Ragged Glory played at both: Love To Burn, Mansion On The Hill, Fuckin' Up, Love and Only Love.

Both of those shows closed with Rockin' In the Free World, then a two song encore of Welfare Mothers and Like A Hurricane. Of the thirteen songs each night (eleven plus two), five are being included so far: Into the Black, Cinnamon Girl, Fuckin' Up, Powderfinger, Love and Only Love.

The big early standouts were Blowin' In the Wind (yellow ribbon and peace sign) after incredible Crime In the City. Other song was Cortez.

I can still hear the jams from those shows in everything Neil has played since then.

For the love of man
Who could understand
What goes on
What is right
and what is wrong
Why the angels cry
And the heaven's sigh
When a child is
born to live
But not like you and I.

Let the angels
ring the bells
In the holy hall
May they hear the voice
That calls to them
For the love of man
Who will understand
It's alright
I know it's alright.

Down the dusty road
To the forest church
Let wander there
Let me wonder why
On the ocean wave
In the billowing sky
Let wander there
Let me wonder why.

Let the angels
ring the bells
In the holy hall
Let them hear
the voice that calls.
For the love of man
Who will understand
It's alright
But I wonder why.

I wonder why.
I wonder why.
I wonder why.
I wonder why.

Special thanks to HarryO. He's consistently the most considerate rustie. So many Neil fanatics talking big, so very, very few who make the effort to share in anything close to real time with those of us who can't be there. Thank you Harry. Your effort is much appreciated. Thanks also to Underthedesertmoon for posting so many clips to youtube. And still no one has bothered to record and post most of the new tunes. Rusties talk a big game, but tour after tour they don't really come through much at the critical times. Sigh.

Excellent show 8/5. Walk like a giant was unreal, though it was sad to hear Neil losing his hope in humanity's capability to solve our problems. A very powerful song to be sure. Neil's respect for Frank was hugely evident and touching. It's not clear why he only did one encore, as they were enjoying the performance so much. I have to believe that Neil felt the energy around the show and the venue and didn't want to get too close to the light. He'll probably go a little further 8/6 and lay out a dynamite encore set.

I found the red rocks fans to be very easy going and mellow. The people I saw were all into the show and grateful to be seeing the horse. Can't wait the 20 years for the shakey crew shot movie of this show to be released in Archives 6 or so.

Twisted Road Lyrics

First time I heard Like a Rollling Stone
I felt that magic and took it home
Gave it a twist and made it mine
But nothing was as good as the very first time
Poetry rollin off his tongue
My Hank Williams chewing bubblegum
Asking me “how does it feel?”
First time I heard Like a Rollling Stone
I felt that magic and took it home

(chorus)

Walkin with the devil on a Twisted Road
Listenin to The Dead on the radio
That old time music is to soothe my soul
If I ever get home I let the good times roll
Let The Good Times Roll (repeat)

Flyin down the road in a dream of mine
Too late tour through a state of mind (?)
Singing in the place where I first saw Roy
Playing that place gave me so much joy
Brand new tune with familiar chords
Flashbulbs poppin at the stage door
All the time looking for something new
Singing in the place where I first saw Roy
Playing that place gave me so much joy

(chorus twice)

Neil, nothing you ever did was bubble gum. It always came from straight from the heart, like Hank, and that's why you write such beautiful songs. I agree chewing on a little bit of Hank's stuff is what gets us through the journey. And isn't it ironic the man who endured loss and pain throughout his lifetime could write songs that filled our hearts with so much joy? Hank had it. Roy had it. And you have it, too. Rock on.

Much love,

It's "Like Hank Williams chewing bubblegum" instead of "My Hank..."

Twisted Road doesn't seem very inspired to me. The lyrics are pretty vacuous. He's not saying much of anything. The melody is forgettable and the lyrics feel crammed in. I'm holding out hope for the other three songs, but this isn't a good indicator to me. He's still not working at the new songs, until the evidence shows otherwise. That's the source, writing the new songs, that's the point of creation and he's still not making full contact. But on the positive side, he is giving a very energetic performance and he's obviously having a great time. But it does feel like he's just yankin his wanker. Here's hoping the other new ones are better. In my opinion, Americana would have been a much richer live show. Dan

Think all four rolled into an urban park setting like Central Park only you have the Golden Gate Bridge as your backdrop and in this zoo there are no cages and the animals are free to express themselves and roam. It'll be fun. Just don't take any hits off any smoke unless you grew it and rolled it yourself. Travel in pairs.

A new song....just like the old song....it's all one song....and this song - walk like a giant - just confirms it.....its not as dynamic or melodic as, say, no hidden path, but its still all one song....one very very long song...

except over and over - that's the BEST song - we've all been waiting 20 years to see it live, and that was just perfect - great video - confirms for the guitarist rusties exactly what positions he is in throughout the song - definitely 10/12/10/12/14/12 on the low E and A on the intro and outro - anybody guess the tuning? sounds 440 to me - never loose that video.....ever....thanks.

For some reason I'm having trouble commenting here lately ...
so next try:

Here are the lyrics for

Ramada Inn

So many years now together
All those good times, up’s and down
So many joys raising up those kids
They moved on now
Out of town
So many times, she tried
So many times, she cried

And every morning comes the sun
And it goes rising to the day
Holding on to what they done
She loves him so
She loves him so
She loves him so
She does what she has to
She loves him so
She loves him so
She loves him so
She does what she needs to

In the Ramada Inn near the Grapevine
They stopped to rest for the night
Travelling down south
Looking for good times
Visiting old friends, feels right
People, they haven’t seen him forever
Since High School Santa Fe times
The restaurant filled and the bottle
They had a few drinks
Now they’re feeling fine

And every morning comes the sun
And it goes rising to the day
Holding on to what they’ve done
He loves her so
He loves her so
He loves her so
He does what he has to
He loves her so
He loves her so
He loves her so
He does what he needs to

Seems like lately things are changing
Seems like lately things are going south
A few drinks now
Then she hardly knows him
He just flips away and checks out
When she says, it’s time to do somethin’
Maybe talk to his old friends, who gave it up
He just poures himself another tall one
Closes his eyes, he says, that’s enough

And every morning comes the sun
And it goes rising to the day
Going on to what they done
She loves him so
She loves him so
She loves him so
She does what she has to
He loves her so
He loves her so
He loves her so
He loves her so
He does what he needs to

And every morning comes the sun
And it was rising to the day
Holding on to what they done
He loves her so
He loves her so
He loves her so
He does what he needs to
She loves him so
She loves him so
She loves him so
She does what she has to

Love this song so very much!!

@Anon 7:41 about tuning. It sounds like Over and Over is Edith Ate Dynamite Good Bye Edith.

I wasn't aware that Neil goes beyond 440 for tuning. What songs does he change it on?

Neil is all over the map on the licks like always but I hear this strumming pattern G C D over and over again which is what Poncho does. The chorus switches to C and D.

SD - He is pretty chatty. Can't imagine what he's stressing out about. Maybe it's too easy? His licks sound better than ever. Maybe the difference is that while he can deviate like he does with Stills, Crawford, Ben, and Pegi's band -- maybe this band is holding him back. I think Billy and Ralph can do it on a fly but when your side man is doing one and two and three between chord changes it does present challenges. I'm just guessing here because I can't imagine why he would be stressed out... It's a band jam on stage. Neil's the show. He's always been the show.

At 8/07/2012 12:36:00 PM, Anonymous SD said...

MNOTR: I assume he is referencing the new songs they're performing, being nervous/stressed performing them for the first few times. Either that or he wasn't being serious.

At 8/07/2012 01:01:00 PM, Blogger Mother Nature on the Run said...

Here what I observe about Crazy Horse band through the ages. The band 's reputation has always been about FEELING the music. Billy is not acting up there. He REALLY is trying to feel the music because he's providing the pulse and Ralph's got the heartbeat. They are giving 200%. Poncho hesitates. He's got to let the music flow out of him. He needs to visualize that he's part of that flow on stage... It looks like to me he's too distracted.

At 8/07/2012 01:10:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@MNOTR - in the recent past, you have basically trashed Poncho's guitar playing while trashing 'Americana' at the same time...now you're calling CH a jam band but at the same time, you said CH might be holding Neil back.

WTF? Which is it?

Your lunacy continues...good grief...at least Doc went away...

Regarding Neil's comments at Red Rocks about stress - nothing said from the stage that night was serious, except maybe "No more plastic" and "Don't believe commercials." Neil was smiling and joking throughout the show, even during the dramatic endings to many songs. "Right on America's children!" was uttered several times, to the amusement of the band.
Regarding Poncho's guitar playing: while this was only my fourth Crazy Horse show, Frank seemed to be actually 'playing' more than just strumming chords. Some nice counterpoints, some inventive up-the-neck positions for chords, changing guitars/sounds - he was in fine form.

At 8/07/2012 01:44:00 PM, Anonymous The Zuma Band said...

"Over And Over" is in standard tuning.

I must defend what Poncho does. His job is to provide the steady chord rhythms for NY to work from. His tone is usually pretty clean, no effects, in distinct contrast to all the changes and manipulations that NY is doing. His basic sound is not unlike NY's, though, as he is also using Les Pauls into an old narrow panel Tweed. He will sometimes add small clean melodic fills (note on the "Powderfinger" recording from the first Red Rocks show), and will move his positions on the neck relative to NY's- when NY is low Poncho will go high, and vice versa. But he has to stay steady- he goes off the rails and you would get a disturbing cacophony. But he doesn't and you get the very lush and fluid and powerfully full sound. NY needs his steadiness in order to fly to the places he does. As the songs are fairly basic -2 or 3 or 4 chords- Poncho has to stay on the ball and not zone out- he has to be ready when NY moves. He does an amazing job. Listen to recordings with him on headphones- sometimes you can't tell who is playing what, as their sounds mesh so well. Only the stereo spread allows you to define who is who, and when Old Black jumps in front of the mix.

Here the lyrics for Ontario:

Ontario

You might see me down in Alabam’
Or Baton Rouge down in Louisian’
I might make it up to Detroit city
Where people work hard and live is great
Don’t really matter where I am
Cause what I do and what I have
This old world has been good to me
I try to give back and I wanna be free
I was born in Ontario
I was born in Ontario
Ontario, Ontario, Ontario

I still like to sing a happy song
But once in a while, when things go wrong
I pick up a pen
Scribble on a page
Try to make sense of my inner age
One cold winter
We went down south
Where daddy is typewriter for a couple of months
But I was born in Ontario
I was born in Ontario
Ontario, Ontario Ontario

I was born in Ontario
Where the black fly bites and the green grass grows
That’s where I learned mostly what I know
‘ause you don’t work much, when you start to get old
I left home at a tender young age
Cause Mom and Daddy never liked to stay
At anyone place for very long
So we just kept movin’, movin’ on
I was born in Ontario
I was born in Ontario
Ontario, Ontario, Ontario

I have seen Mr. Young every time he has been at Red Rocks, he did great this time. The drunks are obnoxious, and the freeloaders who try to move down to more expensive seats are worse! I paid alot for my seat, but kept having people trying to sit with me. The best part of the show was ruined when some strange man stood behind me-not cool! Respect others space when they pay the money for good seats. I didn't pay for strangers to keep bugging me!

I went to both shows ... they were both magnificent. Although the amazing My Morning Jacket 3.5 hour show on Saturday night made Neil's shows seem short! I think both clocked in around the 2hr 10min mark.

The moment he started on Sunday... that TONE from his guitar ... I was in heaven.

I timed Walk Like A Giant on the second night at 23:30, it was maybe even longer on the first night. Although I wish he might have knocked a minute or 2 off a few song outros to fit in an extra song.

Night 1 was my favourite ... Neil was in some kind of form. I've never seen him actually talk to the crowd and engage in banter so much. He was in fine spirits both nights, joking around, but Sunday night was something else. If he wasn't so old, I might have even thought he had taken some mind altering substances.

F*&%%) Up (on the first night especially) was a real hoot. I was in 3rd row centre, and it was great to see all the little band interactions and smiles and goofing around. They were having a blast.

During Over & Over, he locked eyes with two ladies dancing in the front, and jammed with them for a while ... a really great moment.

Some more setlist variety would be great, but the tour has just started. And combined with recent tour history, I wasn't expecting much change. I live in Austin, hopefully they have worked up some different songs when he is back here a bit later in the year.

Long live the Horse!

I have a difficult time even hearing Poncho's guitar. I'm sure that in studio recordings that Neil probably over dubs a lot of the rhythm guitar. Not so sure what Poncho is even playing. With Danny it was different. His guitar was different. It had a distinct sound that you could actually distinguish between his and Neil's. I'm sure it had a lot to do with recording technique as well. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere was mostly recorded live in the studio with minimal over dubbing and with the simplistic approach had Danny's guitar coming from the left channel and Neil's from the right. There was an obvious distinction between the two. With Poncho, he appears to just 'strum' if anything where as Danny was more like a second lead player. I'm just sayin that when I watch live videos of 'Poncho era' Crazy Horse I have a difficult time even hearing Ponchos contribution to the sound. Maybe he's better then we give him credit for because he may be what gives the Horse that full wall of sound without show boating. I'm still not sure.

At 8/08/2012 12:03:00 PM, Blogger BIGCHIEF said...

Poncho sure seems to be having the time of his life though. Unlike the Poncho of old, he is constantly smiling and hopping around. He sure seems to be into it more then ever even though it almost seems to me that his guitar is hardly audible. But as I said previously that may be because he's so good that his sound just gel's so well with Neil that it sounds like one big guitar .....

At 8/08/2012 12:36:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If you're having trouble hearing Poncho's guitar, maybe listen to the recording of Every Morning Comes the Sun from that bootleg of the Sunday show.

You can hear Poncho's rumbling chords being struck in the background, while Neil plays his lead over the top. For example, right now I am listening to it at around 8:30 into the song.

I actually think Every Morning Comes The Sun is a freaking pearler. Slow burning classic. When I was at the shows, I put my head down and closed my eyes and let the guitars just wash over me.

At 8/08/2012 07:23:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree I thought Poncho was right there with Neil all night 8/6 maintaing the power rythyms and had a few riffs of his own here and there. Outstanding performance by all members... Crazy Horse is alive & well!
