A Message from Neil Young

N Y Times
June 2, 2012
(Click photo to enlarge)

From Neil Young's Official News page N Y Times comes a message from Neil himself to his fans:
June 2, 2012

Thanks for your spirited reaction to "A day at the Gallery." I must tell you that we had a good time doing that piece. It was born totally out of fear. We are so scared that Crazy Horse is not good enough to promote our new album conventionally on late night TV. Imagine the disaster that could have occurred there and the damage to our reputation that could have ensued.

What if we had begun one of our songs and gotten hung up on the intro and they had to cut away to a commercial before we got to the first verse?

Thankfully, you loyal fans have been able to understand and sympathize with us.

And we can only say, "You're welcome and thank you, too."

peace & love,
thrasher & thrashette

At least someone has kept the proper perspective on all this.

Thanks Neil. Well said.

The dude is a rock and roller. I love his music. But really. Folks do get carried away. Sure it's art, but it is folk art (Neil has never developed technique).

And Neil is not responsible for all the weight of history that goes with these songs. He's just playing some old songs he grew up with with his favorite garage rock band.

Love it. Don't. Move on.

I love it. This sly message from Neil is itself a work of unbridled genius. High art. A self-referential, post-modern addendum to the Day at the Gallery piece, brilliantly drawing on, and encapsulating, the responses of the fans themselves, in an inventive, inverted, participatory promotional epilogue!!

I loved it. Neil is the best and is welcome to come hang out next trip to Ontario ;)

I'm having trouble determining how many tablespoons of sarcasm are included in Neil's message. Whatever the dose, long may he run.

And so the defining spiritual engine of Neil Young's output in the 21st century is revealed to be, not a race with rust, but the paralyzing fear that he and The Horse are not good enough for his online web forum critics!

Heh, can't exactly say I saw this one coming...

When Neil and the boys release a new album it's become like an event in our house. Love it to hear Old Black squealin' again. Sounds like the tube amps workin' overtime. Thanks Thrasher and Thrashette. It's almost everyday these days I'm checkin' out the site.Cool! Thanks again from Oshkosh....

Neil is just being Neil which is why we love him.

Much to do about nothing.

Thanks for 15 years.

I have been a Neil fan since 1971 when my Mother bought After the Goldrush.

Going just a bit off topic here, but the picture on Neil's site of Almac's Diner is from my home town of Fall River, Mass. Just noticed it for the first time this morning. My father used to take me there in the sixties for breakfast. Memories.

Imagine finding yourself riding a fast and crazy looking horse.

There's a giraffe in front of you.
There's an elephant on your right.

And there's a lion right behind you.
So, what do you do?

You get your drunken ass
off the carousel.

That's a very nice message from old Neil.

Breaking news is that there will NOT be a giant Crazy Horse tour in the next months:

NY: "The art will be the backdrop for this short tour that we’re doing," Young said of the upcoming Americana dates, which he described as "really a very short tour."

At 6/03/2012 12:45:00 PM, Blogger BecauseSoundMatters said...

Sorry, that news came from Rolling Stone and there's a nice picture too:

I don't mind Crazy Horse being (pardon the pun) loose, but *I* don't think they're too inept for LATE NIGHT WITH JIMMY FALLON...c'mon Neil, do it !!

At 6/03/2012 09:05:00 PM, Blogger SONY said...

not too psyched to hear that it's gonna be a relly short tour, but - hey - a little kudos from Neil is great. The fact that he's tuned in speaks it all.

Can someone explain in laymans terms what's Neil's agenda in this NY post? I'm seriously at a loss to understand his true intentions and message here?

At 6/04/2012 02:05:00 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It was removed from his site very shortly after it went up. I'd be surprised if Neil himself actually had anything to do with it, and in any event it obviously wasn't really intended for public consumption.

At 6/04/2012 03:38:00 AM, Blogger peter d. said...

@anonymous: that's my feeling too. I find it very strange that Neil would react to a discussion here and it was'nt a very clear message too.
The very only time he did a thing like that, he used the words 'it has come to my attention'. I'm pretty sure Neil stays away from sites like these, it would make it harder to follow his own path.

Or... was that you Matthew? :-)

At 6/04/2012 07:13:00 AM, Blogger SONY said...

This notes for you!

I gotta believe the 'thank you' was directly from Neil, it's got his prose and humor all thru it. Maybe he took it down because he knew it had already been posted here.

The inference is he's gonna let someone else ghost-write for him? Doubtfull.

At 6/04/2012 08:43:00 AM, Blogger Tweck9 said...

@ Peter d - it's obviously my fault, whatever it is. Just ask no one.

at the very least a dubious post IMO...

pretty funny stuff coming from the group that the critics claimed to be the best performance at the music cares awards this year

At 6/04/2012 02:17:00 PM, Blogger Arthur said...

Like Wardo says, the sarcasm is just dripping off this "thank you" letter.

The lyrics in FITR, "sales have tanked"...perked up my ears.
The Horse records sell. The suits smile...:>)....take it to Late Night! (Take it to the bank!)
We... all want units... to sample..... and hold.

Don't need... no more Late Night!
Don't need... no more critics!
Don't need... no more no ones!
Don't need... no more.....whys?

(This is just my humble take on the music biz and the whole scene here.)

I'll never forget Arlo Guthrie in 1969 yelling out to the crowd at Woodstock,....."Lotta freaks!"

Fast forward to 2012. You can bet Neil reads every single word here....

"Lotta Comments!"

Rabinowitz: "That's good! That's good!"

At 6/04/2012 03:28:00 PM, Blogger Old Black said...

If this is a real post, it is just dripping with sarchasm - like, "You guys, get a f*$king life, for christ's sake. Stop feedin' off me!" (Oh, that's Cool Hand Luke) - but same thing.

I guess it's time to go out hunting for a life.

At 6/04/2012 07:56:00 PM, Blogger Unknown said...

You give yourself too much credit. I believe what no one actually said is (paraphrasing) that you're an idiot. She is welcome to her opinion, but let's not let her comments be misconstrued.

At 6/04/2012 10:39:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Neil Young is the original Elizabeth Warren (at least there's something original about him)

At 6/05/2012 09:51:00 AM, Blogger Tweck9 said...

Pinto, I was being sarcastic. I think you took my comment too literally.

I wasn't giving myself credit for anything, I was making a facetious joke (referencing recent hostile remarks made by a hilariously socially inept internet bully).

At 6/11/2012 10:14:00 PM, Blogger SONY said...

Liner notes for the Americana album/CD are credited to 'NY'. Seems that the prose handle he's been using, his 'pen name' if you will for literary inscription. So the message on his Neil Young Times appears genuine, as was the message.
