Rare Video - Neil Young w/ Danny Shea Band "Nadine", 1981
We're not exactly sure what we have here.
The video is labeled as Neil Young with the Danny Shea Band on the song "Nadine" and is quite smoking.
The date and venue is listed as Live at The Ritz, New York in 1981.
We assume this must be the Mike Bloomfield Tribute on March 2, 1981.
Anyone out there who attended?
Enjoy!
Thanks Peter D!
More on Neil Young's benefit concert performances.
UPDATE: See photographer Bob Leafe's memories of the night & photos:
I came to The Ritz to shoot the Ian Lloyd Band. The opening act was the Danny Shea Band. Danny saw me shooting, came over to me and introduced himself, and then gave me one of the best tips I ever got:
'Stick around.........after the show's over, we'll be doing a special jam'.
After the show, the place cleared out, except for about 20 people. I think it was after 3am.
Danny had been in the last incarnation of the Mike Bloomfield Band and was doing a tribute to Mike, who had recently died. I was told there might be a very well-known guest.
When Neil Young came out, I knew I had something special since I was the only camera in the house.
I later showed Danny the photos and we've been friends ever since.
That turned out to be the best part.

In a 180 degree direction, and I've never know this to be true, but does anyone remember Neil performing a song without playing an instrument? I've never seen him be 'just the singer'.
I think he showed up for one of those benefit concerts. I can see him standing next to Joni but I can't remember the benefit.
Not thinking backup, but lead/out front with a song, his or anyone else's
smokin hot. Even if we couldn't see his head we would know Neil by his dancing. Alway strange when he doesn't take the lead.
on SONY: at the '82 show in berlin he played no instrument during transformer man, except the vocoder... That's the only time i've seen him without intrument
Hmmm. I can't imagine him in front of an audience or tape recorder without his guitar, you know? That would be like photographer trying to tell their story without a camera. He manipulates sound on a guitar in the way a vocalist manipulates their vocal chords to make sound.
The sound he creates on his guitar is his "real" voice. (Or his soul?) His real voice is just harmony or back up to what he's feeling. That's why "Dead Man" is so beautiful. If you close your eyes and kick back on that one, you're in for a real treat even without the movie playing.
I thought everyone knew that's what makes his music so great. He connects to the guitar to express his inner self like Hendrix, Clapton, Page, and Duane did. It explains why Stills and he connected so well when they played together.
No fair, DYM, Vocoder is an instrument. Or it will be after I visit wiki.
I kinda remember Neil singing "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" accapella in San Diego as the final encore during his Neil with Booker T and the MG's back when.
Modern World in 1997 was just him on harp I think.
He did sing Happy Birthday in Brazil just a couple of weeks ago without playing any instrument... ; )
BSM
LOL
I think Sony is asking if he ever did a Perry Como on the audience. Ya know, mic in hand and belting one out for the boys and girls.
Like Sitting on the Dock of Bay acapella from start to finish, aye?
Find the cost of freedom orginally was acapella.
Neil doing a Perry Como, that's a set of words I hadn't thought of being in succesive order. He's could appreciate Perry though.
That's a hot 36 or 42 or 48 string guitar ensemble on that stage having some fun. It just caught me initially seeing Neil playing and not lead singing, so the other thought came to mind. He's a rocker. And then there are just the singers, no strings attached. The Perrys
You've seen the last waltz, right? Just when everyone thinks it over, Garth & Neil continue playing then Robbie comes back and everyone joins in.
Hey, I've seen him harmonize on "Find the Cost of Freedom" a few times.
And, isn't Mother Earth largely sans instrument?

I have this - and another song - with the Danny Shea band on a bootleg DVD. Yes, this is smoking hot !
I love it when Neil jams with other artists other musicians
like on Bridge school benefit or with Pearl Jam ,booker T, Lead Zepp or whoever..he just goes to another level

I am shocked to see that evening with Danny's band and Mr Young on tape! I was there that night (well wee hours of the am, rather) and will never forget it. Words can't describe how great it is to find this video! It is beyond awesome that you got it on tape. (Think I am addressing the videographer here!) Yes Danny was one of the nicest guys I've known and I had the best RandR times of my life watching his band and meeting some of the nicest talented people that he knew. I'll never forget his excitement and smile after that little (huge) gig with Neil. That night was a privelege for all 20 or so folks that were there. LOVED IT. Great job taping what I previously considered my exclusive brush with greatness! I think. (: Lucy Collins
