Comment of the Moment: Following Neil Young's Muse
Already so far on the Twisted Road tour, Neil Young has managed to both delight and confound his audiences.
Reactions range from ecstasy over new songs and newly interpreted classics to bewilderment over new songs, missing classics and short sets.
So what are we to make of 2 nights into the tour?
Here's the Neil Young Comment of the Moment by ShittyHorse:
Man, some people just don't get it!
This is Neil Young we're talking about. I think at this point in the man's career so called "fans" would understand that Neil can do whatever he wants to do. After 40 years in music Neil knows that you MUST change in order to survive, to stay relevant. The man knows what he's doing! This is why we are seeing Neil at theaters and coliseums today and not concerts on the green and state fairs, like many his age who feel they can get by just playing greatest hits.
Neil challenges himself and the audience (just like he's always done)....I respect the HELL out of that!
I think Neil feels that because he is changing his format, doing something different and playing new songs that he must pepper in the hits. You must remember that not every person in attendance is a fanatic like many of us. I'd guarantee that most only own Harvest and Decade. Let not forget we are also hearing Cinnamon Girl, Cortez, and Down by the River like they've never been heard before. Neil, like Dylan needs to breath new life in these songs to play them every night. I don't want to go see a bored Neil Young, do you?
This is why after seeing the man 16times, it is ALWAYS fresh, always exciting and never a retro act.
As far as I am concerned, Neil can play all new songs if he wants and I'd still love it- your talking to a man who saw Greendale live four times.
As I said before, we are lucky and privileged to be able to pay to see Neil on this tour. I think the ticket prices were high in part because Neil wanted his hardcore fans there, but that doesn't always work out as is evident by all the rude chatty people in the audience.
Cant wait for SUNDAY! Mideast Vacation Neil! :)
Peace!

Right on - makes me question my own initial gripe about the length of the set - excellent perspective. Cannot wait until Monday night...
I agree 100 percent. I caught the U.S. debut of "Greendale." I went to the show having no idea he was even doing it. Yeah, I know, but I'm a busy guy.
Anyway, about halfway through, while idiots are grumbling around me I'm thinking, wow, I'm seeing a real artist at work.
I feel lucky I saw it, just as I feel lucky to have seen the Trans Tour and Neil with the Shocking Pinks. I saw Neil on tour with Willie. That's what I love about him, he keeps it fresh by changing it up.
I kick myself to this day for not seeing him on the "This Notes For You" tour when I could have!!!
Couldnt have been said better! The Buffalo performance was incredible - what a fantastic nite! True Neil - perfect in every way in everything he does - NO ONE compares! He knows what his true fans love because he truly loves them, while still being true to himself.
Lovin Neil for 35 years and forever!!

I went to Greendale and left thinking--Genius! Saw it 2 more times. He can do anything he wants and we will love him for being real.
R.E.S.P.E.C.T.!
That about sums it up hey Shitty!
Well written!

Nah, the comment of the moment was:
"I don't care if he sings Row Row Row your Boat. And plays it on a dime store guitar. Go Neil Young."
Also mighty fond of "There is nothing better than to watch Neil wonder around the stage..."
Altough I agree for the most part, I do think that the setlist is a little short for the money. I'm willing to pay a whole lot to see him and will when I get the chance but somewhere like half an hour more would be nice I guess.
It's not like you're not getting your money's worth, Neil just sitting on a chair for half an hour would be worth a price still.
Rink's: You are talking about the Greendale opener in Ft. Lauderdale, correct? I was there, too...third row center. After Lucinda opened up, Neil went into his Greendale story.
I forget what song it was, but he fucked it up. He fucked it up and started over. He laughed about it, and started over.
Perfection is a loser's game. The reason why Neil can tinker and tweak and twist his road is because each performance is an experiment...we are his his lab rats.
Some rats hate the maze...some rats love the journey for what it is.
I remember the two dudes sitting to my left at that 1st Greendale show...bitching and moaning (of course) about the boring new stuff and wanting hits...these are the rats who hate the maze, because they can't get their beloved cheese, easily.
Some rats hate the maze. Some rats love the muse. That Greendale opener was flawed and clunky...and brilliant and brave.
"Why do I keep fucking up...". Because we love it when you do, Neil.
Judd, love the rat analogy!..seems there's still a lot of critics out there that just love layin 'the "ratsack" out hey!
