Jackson Browne and Neil Young
Not too long ago, there was some discussion about Jackson Browne we came across. And that got us to thinking about how Jackson Browne and Neil Young are connected. As best we can tell, there's very little of a connection between the two singer-songwriters. But then we recalled Neil wearing a Jackson Browne t-shirt on the Rust Never Sleeps tour in 1978.
We had forgotten about Young wearing a Jackson Browne t-shirt that appears to be from the cover of Jackson Browne's landmark 1972 Saturate Before Using. So aside from Neil wearing Jackson's album t-shirt on the seminal RNS tour, we can't really discern any other connection between the two. (Unlike some other artists that Neil has intersected with over the years.)
Jackson Browne paid tribute to Neil Young when he was Honored As MusiCares Person Of The Year. Browne performed "Don't Let It Bring You Down". Jackson Browne:
“I’ll be singing ‘Don’t let it bring you down’ which is a powerful song,” said Browne before attending the gala dinner. “Neil Young’s singular use of language is what amazes me,” he said. “It really raises the bar. Nobody but Neil would say, 'When you dance, I can really love.' He's got this powerful way of carving language in very simple blocks of meaning that go right to the core of you."

my tribute to neil. perhaps the only electric version of helpless you will find. forgive the artistic liberties i took to inject some soul - it's just my style.
thanks for the great blog.
Neil has been seen in some pretty funky t-shirts over the years....I wouldnt read too much into that.
He wore a fishbone t-shirt for a while, Elvis' last prescription, Naked Tinkerbell (awesome),
I think the better discussion is what t-shirts has neil worn over the years...
Jackson Browne? blaaa...
Keep on Rockn' in a t-shirt
"we got a thousand pairs of pants..." just a thought...
Nicolette Larsson is one of the connections I see between JB and NY
Joel Bernstein would be a connection between Neil and Jackson. He worked for and photographed both.
Jackson played Tell me why in Agoust 2006 Los Angeles.
After Neil and Jackson played in the same show at 22/02/1985 at New Zeland Auckland.
I hope some day we can see at the Bridge Neil and Jackson together!!!!!
rustvision
Isn´t the naked tinkerbell one actually called "the seven sins" or three sins or something? I think he explains this in one 1976 part of YOTH. It also features a drunk peter pan sitting in front of a beer if I´m not mistaken. Cool shirt, and for his habits he wore it even for quite some time, at least Time Fades Away Tour through european tour ´76.
Another cool shirt is "Geronimo - My Heroes have alway killed cowboys" Neil says: "Not my sentiments, though" gotta love him!
As for the NY/JB connection. Everytime I hear the beginning of Song For Adam I have to think of the original studio intro to Cowgirl In The Sand, for some reason.

Jackson Browne will play at the MusiCares Person of the Year tribute to Neil in January.
>>I hope some day we can see at the Bridge Neil and Jackson together!!!!!<<
Don't know if this refers to the Bridge concerts but Jackson performed at one October 26, 1990 because I have the t-shirt to prove it. Don't remember if he sang with Neil though.
Oh, man....ALL those cats (and kittens) from the
mid-sixties Laurel/Topanga Canyon days in SoCal KNEW each other! They partied together! Tried out their new songs on each other! They ALL connected with each other some way or another. Music will never see another time such as those! So hang on to what we have now because some day...they'll just be recorded memories.
Warren Zevon is the most obvious link to me. Jackson really was instrumental early in his career, and Neil contributed some great guitar on a couple of albums. By the way, any one else think Neil may have been channeling Warren on 'Dirty Old Man'? That song has Zevon all over it.
Here's a conncection: Gary Burden who has designed many album covers for Neil also designed this one.
umm... I hate to point out the obvious, but wouldn't the link be Crosby Stills and Nash? Jackson Browne is very close with all three of them, especially Graham Nash. They've been involved in countless political /environmental projects together (like MUSE)and they're constantly doing joint fundraisers. Graham Nash also has a son named Jackson. Jackson Browne is closer wth CSN than Neil Young is.
Good call on the Gary Burden connection. And while the cover does say "Saturate Before Using," the name of the album is simply called "Jackson Browne."
Haven't they both bonked Joni Mitchell?
Ugandan discussions with Joni Mitchell. Plus she wrote a song about JB and NY wrote a song (or maybe two)about her.
Graham Nash, David Crosby and Jackson Browne were all at one tiem involved with Joni Mitchell. I don't know about NY. That said, it was at a time when everybody was having sex with everybody, so I wouldn't put a lot of stock in the sex connection.
Hmmm, So Dr Connie...the prognosis is.. They're was a bit of, how you say..Malpractice goin' on at the time!....
innaresting!
The intimate connection
The last few times I've seen Jackson Browne were accoutic shows which were on par with Neils accoustic shows that I have seen. The raps are just about as entertaining and the guitar picking/playing is excellent. The 'band' concerts of JB's I've seen were not as rewarding to me as often they have become greatest hits shows, which generally bore me to tears. That is not the case with Neil.
The main problem with the accoustic shows is the 'wurlitzer' of audience requests all night. I hate that. I wish people would just shut up. Ya can't hear the guy talk between songs. At least the Continental Tour shows announced that the songs were already selected and that kept the shout outs down a little.
Either way, both of these guys can play that 6 string like ringin' a bell and are usually worth the price of admission.
aration: David Crosby sings harmonies on Saturate Before Using.
The obvious connection I can see is that the late Carrie Snodgress (who is the mother of Neil's son Zeke) was involved with Warren Zevon after splitting up with Neil. Warren worked a lot with Jackson. Also Neil was good friends with Linda Ronstadt who Jackson was also friends with. Same social group in the late 1960's/early 1970's....
jackson was a young songwriter hanging out in LA with the byrds and other folk rock acts. the first time i heard of him was via a david crosby interview before jb cut his first record. both crosby and nash sing on his first two albums. (in fact "for everyman" was a response to "wooden ships". when neil moved west, they all hung out in those canyons w/ joni.
jb has also done some bridge shows.
Well, whatever connection there was or wasn't before Neil is now dating Jackson Browne's ex, Darryl Hannah.
Neil just married JB's ex Darryl Hannah. So there's that. And David Crosby sang on several of JB's early records and certainly Crosby and Neil are connected so there may be something there. In fact Crosby messed up his friendship with Young because of how comments about Darryl which very probably stemmed from his knowledge of what happened between JB and Darryl. JB always maintained that Darryl was a bit nuts and JFK Jr even said that he believed JB's side of the story. I'm veering off topic but Neil's wife is JB's ex and Neil's former bandmate sang on JB's records so there's the connection.
