Live RUST: "You'll believe you're at a Neil Young Concert"
It has been said of the Neil Young tribute band Live RUST that "you'll believe you're at a Neil Young concert".
With incredible attention to every detail, LIVE RUST have worked extremely hard to bring the Full Concert Experience of Neil Young to each and every Show.
Quite simply, there is not nor has there ever been such a Complete and Authentic Tribute to the "Canadian Icon of Rock & Roll" Neil Young has become over his 40 year long (and still going!) Career.
LIVE RUST have put together a Show that cannot be missed by Neil Young Fans (Rusties they call themselves) or Classic Rock & Roll Fans for that matter..."there are just too many Songs we all know and love from his Catalogue to miss what is an Amazing Concert Experience!"
With a true love of Neil's Music, LIVE RUST are playing to bring the all to rare "Neil Concert" to Fans far and wide.
"It's all too good not to be played and heard...and heard often. We're bringing this Music to the People because there are songs Neil has Written that are the Sound Track of our Lives. You hear Cinnamon Girl or Heart Of Gold and you remember where and what you were doing when it was all over the Air Waves, and that brings a Smile to many faces."
Roger (Neil in Live RUST)
Live RUST appeared at the Summer of Love Fest in Kitsilano, BC before 4,000 people. Check out there video of "Rockin' in the Free World".
Thanks Roger of Live RUST!
And here are some more bands covering Neil Young songs.

That was great! I played Neil in a garage tribute band for a while about 12 years ago and it was a blast, even though we never got out of the practice room. We came away with 4 or 5 cuts we recorded in some dude's basment in Allston, Mass. It actually was a rusty band with Mike (Pez) Pelligrino on sometimes-bass and our beloved Paul Dionne on drums..A guy named Mark Williamson, who went by Poncho, was the driving force and it was remarkable that he encouraged someone else (me) to be Neil. I'll never forget that experience of having a hot rhythm section encouraging a totally incompetent lead guitarist and vocalist. A rare experience in life! I should try to get one of those tracks up there.
I'm sorry...I don't get it...did Neil die? Surely ANY Musician's goal should be to be admired loved worshipped appreciated for being THEMSELVES...*I* am a better guitarist and singer than Neil, but THAT'S NOT THE POINT...Neil has written lots of great lyrics, but I don't count the lyrics to HOMEGROWN among them...and THAT'S not the point...what I usually say about playing Music is: "if it ain't fun, I'm done" maybe THAT is the point...but there's only ever gonna be ONE Neil Young...
asg
do these guys do any originals. because, i'm sorry to say, cover bands are LAME.

You know, everyone's entitled to their opinion, of course.
But "LAME".?! That was pretty insightful commentary.
care to elaborate on that viewpoint?
Otherwise, put yourself in the shoes of those who pay tribute to the music they love.
peace
IMHO,COVER bands are NOT lame...TRIBUTE bands,to me, just seem pointless...and in MY experience,a cover band doing SOME originals is OK,just don't make that the main thing...and I'll say this-if ya come out to hear the band I'm in and we don't play it "like the record" (for whatever reason)I just might tell you that if that is what ya wanna hear, you shoulda stayed home (save gas, and wear and tear on yer car)...yes, I watched the clip...yes, it looked like FUN,but there's STILL only one Neil Young...asg
On the other hand, *I* LOVE these bands that cover Neil. Anybody ever heard Don't Spook the Horse's version of On the Beach? It really rocks. Outta site. Another good band that plays a lot of Neil is Lazy Buffalo.
Not everybody can travel 800 miles and pay $89 to see Neil. But maybe they can pay 5 bucks to see some great live music they love.
Thanks!
Bill
I do not know about "Live Rust", but there is a Norwegian project called "Young Neils" - Neil wore a t-shirt with their name on a lot of 1993-shows. The project consists of some of Norways best musicians who get togheter every December 22. and 23. and plays Neil Young songs just for the fun of it. I am sure Young Neils knows that there is only one Neil Young and the band does not stink at all!
I think one of the members -Lars Lillo Stenberg- was the one that reminded Neil Young of the song "Sad Movies" before the 2007/2008 tours playing it on his farm.
Interesting stuff. Indeed there is only one Neil...no one in LIVE RUST thinks otherwise. Everyone in the Band also have many Projects other then this Tribute. I sure hope the "Surely ANY Musician's goal should be to be admired loved worshipped appreciated for being THEMSELVES" was in jest? Otherwise, man oh man are you doing it for the wrong reasons. Got it right later about being "fun".
I make my living as a Musician and being diverse is the biggest key to that. Someone has to have passed to pay tribute? That's sad...each and everyone in LIVE RUST are true fans of Neil, personally seen him over 20 times. But there ya go...opinions are just that. Roger of LIVE RUST.
Thanks Roger.
Yeah, I don't get some of these comments either?
Not sure where they're coming from on this.
Right On Live Rust! Keep up the good work! I appreciate what you do. You bring the Neil Young experience to a lot of people who otherwise would not get to see a Neil Young concert and there's nothing at all wrong with that! In fact there's a lot right with that!
I cover a lot of Neil Young solo acoustic and have had my share of very nasty comments and critique but ultimately it doesn't matter. If you're doing what you love just keep on going! I'm fortunate to have some really great people who support my efforts.
BTW, when I met Neil and told him I did covers of his songs on YouTube he acted very grateful and gave a big thumbs up! I think Neil sees the value in having his music live on through others.
Nice version! I too have a cover band - it's a ton of fun to do other folks' music and try to put a new spin on it. The band is called Flat Stanley and we try not to do songs that everyone has heard four million times (Brown Eyed Girl). In Neil's case though, we try to keep it close to his spirit - sloppy and raw. maybe I don't express myself that well...If someone sez to Roger "you're great when you do Neil, but you suck otherwise..." and HE'S OK with that so be it...I don't think I could play "all Neil all night"--maybe it's an ADD thing...if it's workin' for you Rog, don't let ANYBODY turn you around...
asg
lol if somebody says I suck otherwise...can you say backhanded compliment? Too funny.
I think you missed that I do many other "things" as a Musician?
The comment of "*I* am a better guitarist and singer than Neil, but THAT'S NOT THE POINT" says a whole lot about where things are coming from. Sounds like there isn't much fun coming from what you're doing perhaps? After 30 Years of making a living playing Music, I think I might just continue to do so...so thanks for the "kind" words of "don't let ANYBODY turn you around" Can always use a good laugh :o)
Roger LIVE RUST
I don't know Roger...I'm tickled that he's been making a living playing Music for 30 years, and does other (Musical)things...*I* think he should thank, er, uh SOMEBODY that he doesn't have to work in a grocery store to pay the bills...I usually DO have fun playing Music...not always...maybe Roger is way passed the point where he has to share the stage with people who ARE NOT as talented as they think they are,if so maybe he should be grateful for THAT...I'm not attacking ANYBODY,like I say, I don't know the man...he need not be so defensive...as for me,I think after I get comfortable with my new bandmates I'm gonna suggest the version of THE LONER found on LIVE RUST...
asg
p.s.--yes I DO know how lame "don't let anybody turn you around" sounds;
asg
I really don't understand why we can't have our own opinions about things (ie, if you don't like covers of NY songs, i guess that is why we don't see you at parties where live neil covers are the thing we get together for...and that is cool) without PUTTING OTHERS DOWN because they DO like covers or like to DO COVERS....(ie, calling cover bands LAME, pointless)
i am female and do neil covers...i supposed that is REALLY lame and pointless.....LOL
i love playing neil and hearing neil....and live music is BETTER...and THANKS to LIVE RUST, YOUNG NEILS and all the other ny cover bands out there.....
Well I just have to chime in on this one. The first time I heard Neil Young I was hooked! I learned to play the guitar in the early 70's because of Neil. He has been the most influential musician I've ever heard. Throughout the years I've played Croce, Dylan, Fogelberg, Eagles and a bunch more. But nothing felt as good as playing Neil's songs. They just fit with me. “Here We Are In The Years”, and now that I am an ”Old Man” and have gone through a ton of bands playing originals and covers, I decided that since I’m not a song writer I just want to pay homage by performing the songs I really enjoy playing the most to the one musician I love the best. Neil Young. Heck, it could me my “Last Dance” before my “Time Fades Away”. I am always “Looking Forward” to my next Neil Tribute show.
I’m not Neil Young and I’m not “Lost In Space” nor are any other tribute bands that perform his music. We do it for the love and respect of Neil’s music. “Let It Shine” my tribute brothers and sisters! “Long May You Run” Roger!
For those of you who don’t or won’t understand the philosophy of a tribute band, “Throw your Hatred Down” and “Don’t Let It Bring You Down”! We just perform “Borrowed Tunes” :)
If there were ever anyone who is a true fan with a “Lotta Love” for Shakey, it’s me.
This Notes For You,
Jeff Taylor

thank you Jeff for not attacking me personally...the epiphany I had this morning was this: If *I* so much as play ONE Neil song, I'm I not (microscopically)paying tribute to Neil? I think I am...again it's THE MUSIC that matters, in my opinion...and again I'll say COVER bands are fine...even singer/songwriters I know play SOME covers...but they DO make the songs "theirs"...and *I* see nothing wrong with that..
Thanks Jeff!
Good words.
And we can say having checked out Jeff's band that they're pretty close to the next best thing. :)
Jeff, I do love covers of Neil's songs anyway their dished out... Yep and your up with the best of them I feel.
What does irk me is when cover bands CHANGE THE LYRICS... not the melody or key selection, its speed or their interpretation...just the lyrics.. thats the poignancy of Neil's songs anyway.. his lyrics are the Key to his musical poetry..sometimes meloncholy sometimes romantic, sometimes weird ..but thats the beauty of Neil's songs.. the fact that you duplicate them perfectly is a credit to your ability as a musician. The fact that you have chosen Neil to base your career on doesn't surprise me in the least. I'd love to be able to play guitar especially Neil songs so I always appreciate a good cover band where Neil is concerned...we don't seem to have any ones in Auss of your calibre THAT I KNOW OF.... but, if there is someone down under in the Sydney region that does play great Neil cover (Especially Cinnamon Girl) I'd love to hear it!!
Having a Blast doing what I do...not a lot of people can say that, so I count my blessings and Keep Rockin'.
Can it get any better?
I hear a resounding "NOPE!" lol
Roger LIVE RUST
Ditto to you also Roger of my comments to Jeff.. Incidentally, have you guys ever thought of getting together for one massive tribute/ cover show?
It would be Awesome!!
If ya ever come "down under" please warn me when ya comin on TW,... I'd love to catch the show!
Doc
doc,
you wanna play neil's songs eh? well, he only ever plays about 10 chords, so once you learn the major ones you can play virtually every song the man has written.
and i stand by my earlier comment. cover bands are lame. if i want to hear a neil young song played just like the record i think i'll go to the source.
Well, if thats the case Anonymous, those are the sweetest 10 chords I wanna listen to..it mighten be Leo Kotke on a 12 string or some flamingo guitarist...sometimes its those simple 10 chord riffs or whatever (I'm not a musician) that grab you the most...nothing complicated.. just pure and simple... and thats the formula.. combined with Neil's lyrics that makes those "LAME" songs so memorable and timeless...so cover me with the powder and the finger!!!
luv doc
Geez"asg", sounds like a bit of the old "Jelly beans" goin' on here!
Sorry if I have that impression! lol
doc roc
if "jelly beans" is a reference to "jealousy" I believe I DID admit to that, somewhere...I'm STILL not puttin' anybody down, I just think the MUSIC matters, not the costume, etc...if Neil WAS no longer here, it might make sense...(sigh)
Hey asg, just think of Jeff and Roger and, for "what its worth", all the other respected cover artists, as Santa Neil's "little helpers".If they wanna get dressed up all "Neilified" ..it just adds to the "Authenticity" of a good tribute/cover band...I don't think it is ever done in bad taste or disrespect for the "Real Neil Deal"
Look at all the "Elvis" impersonators..it wouldn't be the same if they did get dressed up like the "king" would it?
Just my opinion.
Doc
Sorry, I meant to say "didn't"
The soc dr
doc, whether it's Elvis, Pink Floyd, ABBA, Led Zepelin, Queen, the Beatles, the Who or Neil, all *I* care about is the Music...as for anonymous' assertion that cover bands are lame, I think it's important to note that The Beatles (for one) started out as a cover band...and the first two songs Neil sang in public were covers...
asg
There is a band in Italy named RUSTIES... they formed in 1998... they released 4 great albums of Neil covers... they gave more than 500 concerts all over Europe... they've got an amazing press/critical response... the singer & guitar player wrote two books about Neil (and also one about Crosby)...
Now they just released "Move Along", their first album of original songs... and it's really good!

Check out our cover of Powderfinger. We get lots of requests for Neil Young. It's fun when you play this for a crowd of people and the one's in the know just give you the nod and wink - they get Neil!!

Little late to the discussion here. Neil tributes tend to creep me out when the musicians try to look and sound just like Neil, even when just speaking.
That being said, I thoroughly enjoy listening to well-done covers and people putting their own spin on it, while still retaining the essence of the song. And if they happen to sound like Neil, well, that's not always under a person's control. And after singing along with his songs for your whole life, it's kind of hard NOT to get every accent, inflection and whatever in there, eh?
And if a tribute band can make money at it, then more power to them.
I always like to think Neil stands for love and tolerance, so...
Keep on rockin' in the USA and elsewhere... everybody!
Yeah, hate those cover bands - Berlin Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Halle Orchestra...
