I got hooked after Ragged Glory and Weld. Then I discovered the older material such as Harvest, Zuma etc.
Yesterday I was seated on the second row on the balcony - trust me, NOT at all a bad seat! :-)
In front of me I had a couple of youngsters wearing Kurt Cobain t-shirts. During the acoustic set they looked a bit confused. However, boy, did they drop their jaws during that electric set!
Damn it, this was a beautiful concert! I never saw Cortez the Killer live before, and this was a fantastic end to a great show!

Talking about a concert to remember! What a joy to hear songs like Ambulance Blues & Journey Through The Past finally live.

Is was a perfect mix between acoustic & electric (they were really enjoying themselves), between known & unknown.

And I have to say: the venue was very good as well. I never visited the Stadsschouwburg before, but the sound was just perfect.

What an amazing show.. Neil was having a lot of fun, telling stories, and appreciated a great and quiet crowd. His playing was perfect, his piano playing flawless.

Those of you who have tickets for this tour, get ready for something incredible..

Nice to see the reviewer on Rust being more impartial than most. Too bad about Cortez being off beat and ended early.

First show in almost 2 months, I'm sure they'll warm back up into a more natural groove by the end of the tour (which is the time at which I'll be seeing him).

I never thought Cortez was a good song for this band anyway, too slow and abstract.

Can't wait to see him in Manchester on the 12th.

Just been listening to the stream on Rust Radio, he played 'Don't say you win, don't say you lose' too. Sounds like a brilliant gig. Can't wait for Manchester on the 11th March!

Sounds great! I am even more excited now...I'll be going to the 2nd night in Paris.
Does anyone know how cameras are dealt with? Are they allowed? As it will be my first time to Paris since a long time ago I'd like to take a camera with me anyway and then of course also make 1-2 shots at the concert.
Anyone knows something?

At 2/13/2008 04:22:00 AM, Blogger rdvdijk said...

About cameras: The security was super-tight during the show on Monday. You could get about anything inside the venue, but during the show they almost crucified people who took pictures.

Neil explicitly requests not to take pictures during the show, one of his crew asks asks this over the PA right before the show starts.

"Your mileage may vary.."

At 2/13/2008 06:58:00 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Thank you for the info!
So if I understand you correctly, it's no problem to get a camera inside, but "forbidden" to actually take pictures. I would be okay with that, I am just concerned that they are going to take my hole camera away...it's a large Canon eos camera, so that would be pretty bad. So I am thinking about leavin it at home in the first place?! Or maybe I could lock it up somewhere. I just don't want to avoid trouble.

I meant of course that I want to AVOID TROUBLE ;) Sorry.

In Seattle last October they caught me at the entrance with my small point-and-shoot digital camera. I had to leave it at a desk and could pick it up later.

Of course this all varies from venue to venue, this is Neil's own security.

Well, here's the setlist from the 12th (via BNB):
02-12-2008, Stadschouwburg, Antwerpen, Belgium
w/ Rick Rosas, Ben Keith, Ralph Molina, Anthony Crawford & Pegi Young

From Hank To Hendrix
Ambulance Blues
Sad Movies
A Man Needs A Maid
No One Seems To Know
Try
Harvest
After The Gold Rush
Mellow My Mind
Love Art Blues
Don't Let It Bring You Down
Cowgirl In The Sand
Old Man
---
Mr. Soul
Don't Cry No Tears
Dirty Old Man
Spirit Road
Bad Fog Of Loneliness
Winterlong
Oh, Lonesome Me
The Believer
No Hidden Path
---
Cinnamon Girl
Rockin' In The Free World

The Sultan

Looks like an amazing show-first time RITFW appears! "Mr. Soul" followed by "Don't Cry." And "The Sultan" reappears. Wishin' I lived in Belgium...

Has anyone an idea how to get a Neil autograph? I'm going to RAI on Monday, but is there a soundcheck with Neil? If so, what would be the time? Anyone knows where to be at RAI to get to see Neil sneaking into the RAI?

incredible gig, just listened on the rust radio channel. This tour is incredible, it is not a greatest hits tour it is more like a personal tour, so many songs that did not make the album cuts, sad movies, love art blues, try and songs that were too personal to leave in the public domain like ambulance blues. neil really is opening up on this tour. Also big shout to rust radio, what a public service that is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been wondering this for ages. Does anyone know why Poncho does not tour with neil anymore. He is the only guy who has been ever present since the mid 70's but he seems to have fallen out of favour around the greendale period. Why?

This was a long and nice evening in the Grand Rex, a thirties style theater, reminiscent of the golden Hollywood era. The mix of a very nice sound system and the good old human musician analog interface worked perfectly. The opening act was as smooth as it gets, with Pegi going from song to song with ease, but her voice after a while became a bit like the radio playing in the background.
Then Neil came along sat in the middle of his now usual acoustic setup, well what can you say that hasn't already been said. It's amazing how his voice stays unchanged in time, even gets better in a certain way. He just sort of dreams along, his "out of time - I'm not there but I am there" stage caracter, gave his presence a quiet aura which was gracefully sustained by his singing, as well as his swing-picking guitar style . There was a nice old synth on, A man needs a maid. The stage was a joyous kitschy mess, small and big spot lights like in a cinema setup; with a painter, painting in the background and then bringing up front the paintings which we're actually the titles of the songs. When the the electric part came along, he just pumped the shit out of big black. The noisy or wall of sound dimension was welcome with a mesmerized audience that listened carefully to rather long and improvised sections. He talked a bit between songs, more rural family talk, but no political hints or comments.
It's a pity in these fast and technological times, that you can't leave from a gig like this with audio-files of the gig on your usb key. I'm sure that every single person out there would have bought them. Who needs another t-shirt...
That's it in few words, too bad you can't upload images here.
