In a recent article I picked up from the highway, Neil is quoted,
"I think that the time when music could change the world is past. I think it would be very naive to think that in this day and age."
Did I read that right?
Music has always served as the catalyst for change ... the musician who provides the message in many cases is like a teacher we don't appreciate until we look back and see how they directly impacted our lives ...
What quickly precipitated change in the Nam years was the public's strong reaction to the deaths of the young people caught in the protest crossfire on campuses throughout the US ... do we really want to see our kids being shot down on the college campus today by orders from their own president? No. This is happening anyway due to a different war we're fighting here in the homeland ....
But don't sell yourself short, you old geezer. How many times has a person come up to you to say, "thanks Neil, for making LWW."
There's your answer.
Consider this ... the increase in activism lead by some very brilliant young people associated with MoveOn & increase in voter registration over the past 8 years from people who typically don't show at the polls ... it is always a few who lead ...
Hell, I got off my fat ass and did something after listening to LWW ... we all did ...
Rock on, Neil!!
Be safe, be careful, and send us a postcard ...
I'm gonna PUKE! you Ignorant Hippies that compare EVERYTHING to your precious VIET NAM make me SICK!
Do you know what the BIG difference is/was? YOU COULD BE DRAFTED IN NAM!!!
I mean really...that's the difference...the idea the country was FORCED to get you chicken shits to serve your country since (by your own admission) you sat around on your FAT ass! Then, to make things WORSE...all you COWARDS ran and hid in colleges and became MOLDY, STALE LIBS that spewed your ANTI-AMERICAN vile hate speech to new young minds in order to justify your OWN guilt for not serving your nation.
I mean I just got through watching the Rolling Stones at Altimont. Now when I was a teenager, all that crap was "cool", now I look back at the 60's and the hippies as nothing more than a LAZY, UNGREATFULL, NON-CONTRIBUTING, SELFISH Group of ANTI-AMERICANS!
Other Generations ROSE to the occasion, the Civil War....WWI & WWII to make the world a BETTER place, but you sissies took the easy way out!
YOU HAVE NOTHING TO BE PROUD OF YOU LOSERS!
So, the fact that they have commercialized war and sold it not to the highest bidder but the most connected sole source and have at the same time managed to enlist warm bodies who couldn't see a future in a Wal-Mart uniform while they let corporations run amok with a greedy chase to the bottom and a bloody thirst for oil and a careless regard for the natural world and they sell us cheap chinese sweatshop shirts which we buy with weakened dollars we got from our latest HELOC and some shiek from the UAE is bailing us out with fistfuls of petrodollars he won when the prices tripled based on our needless incursion and our country spirals into a recession and a nine trillion foot hole from which we will never recover and the top 1% pay less taxes than their maids - of this we are to be proud?
Pass me the puke bucket when you're done pontificating, will ya' buddy?
So ...
You don't think that the memorial song "Ohio" written in 1970 had no impact on our country's aggressive push to finally end the draft in 1973& bring the troops home?
It appears the rest of the country has developed a strong resistence to that nasty virus you apparently have; so puke your heart out.

Mr I'm gonna PUKE brings up a good point I don't think I've ever considered:
What would the world look like today if we (the USA) prevailed in Vietnam?
I certainly do not have an academic background that brings me great insight in this matter. However, I am suddenly terribly saddened because I think a win in Vietnam would make little, if any, impact on today's world. 58,000 dead soldiers, 10s of 1000s of soldiers permanently injured physically and/or mentally is the price we paid. What a horrific toll.
I find it odd that 'liberals' are pounded today about Vietnam considering the fact that Kennedy and Johnson led us there. Eisenhower tried to warn us. That's a lesson we could have learned from a conservative.
It is much easier to project a 'course of history' if the axis forces had prevailed in WW2. The same could be said about WW1.
With the Civil War, I find it more difficult to project an influence on today's world if the South had prevailed. Perhaps the civil rights movement would be 10 or 20 years behind its current point. Perhaps federal government would be very weak compared to the states. In that scenario, perhaps we never become an industrial powerhouse, never enter WW1 or WW2 or Vietnam or Iraq.
Thanks Fried (I think),
How bout this food for thought.... The American Civl War is/was "misnamed". It was NEVER a "Civl" war, it was a war of "Independance" ie the South departing from the North.
The South NEVER tried to overturn the North's "Government", They simply wanted thier independance.
Anyway, War is ugly, mean, sad all the negative things one wants to say about it. But...BUT...War is here to stay. It always has been, it ALWAYS will be. It will NEVER go away.
Neil can write all the songs and People can Pray their butt's off, but it's not going anywhere-EVER.
The sooner you accept that, the better one can see Mankind for what it is.
The only way to "curb" war, is to give people reasons NOT to fight...say..OH I dunno...FREEDOM??
Perhaps FREEDOM in places where they don't have it might help a little. Say, oh I Dunno....in places like THE MIDDLE EAST?
The other important Item is to make sure those who HAVE the most power, use it responsibly. And NO other Nation on the face of this earth has come close to doing the amount of "GOOD" as the U.S of A.
Liberals HATE it when you brag about America! Thye LOVE to HATE it and look for ALL the Bad because they are naturally flawed individuals (and they know it deep inside).
Chili
Chili, That's not true about democrat progressive types hating America. We love America ...
We just want to know who that man is from behind the curtain and why does he need to be hiding?
