The Archives Release Delayed Until 2008
The last official announcement was that The Neil Young Archives would be released in 2007. A very reliable source close to the Neil Young camp has confirmed that the Archives release has been DEFINITELY pushed back to February 2008. No reason has so far been given.
One could speculate on the possibilities. Might Neil decide to support the release with some sort of tour? Or is more time needed to prepare the marketing? Or maybe it's just Neil's way of keeping the release just barely out of the fan's reach in order to keep our suspense up? As always, who knows.
The official Archives page on the Reprise Records website still states a 2007 release.

If Neil decides to tour, I can handle a few more months delay. What's a few months after all these years?
Especially if he tours Europe. C'mon Neil. Hit the road!
I still maintain that I'll believe it when I see it.
I knew it was too good to be true.
Come on Neil! We're dying.
Everyone knows the archives will be released in july.
But no one knows which year......
This cracks me up! Ah, Neil. Although intensely disappointed, I feel oddly relieved ... He's the same ol' Neil, up to the same ol' tricks. The guy's never boring, I'll give him that. : ) Actually, I have been kinda freaking out that Neil was finally and once and for all letting go of (drum roll, please, Ralph) "THE ARCHIVES," it felt weirdly like some sort of step back or, dare I say it , retirement ... (Gulp.) Don't Retire Neil, Remember, Just Retread!
Well, at this point, I only hope that I fade away rather than burn out so that I'm still around when this treasure is FINALLY released (and that will be only the first installment!, well, third if you count Massey and Fillmore)
I won't believe the Archives are out until they're in my hands.
Sigh. I guess this just means more time to save up my pennies.
I dont think we'll see a full Neil tour again, I think his last health scare put an end to any touring.
Hmmm. Maybe we'll get another Live Archives release? How about some Tonight's The Night tour stuff, Neil!
Yeah, we'll get a tour, don't you worry about that. Neil's still only in his early 60's and there's life in the old dog yet.
Just remember, he's done this all his life, looking as if he's ready to start something, then it goes on the back burner or gets scrapped completely. And all of a sudden there's something else there that no one predicted.
I guess he likes playing these guessing games with himself. God knows what those close to him think of his sudden changes. I'm sure they get just as exasperated, but like us, they have to put up with it.
On the positive side, there's plenty of good music around to listen to while we're waiting: Wilco's Sky Blue Sky, Ryan Adam's Easy Tiger and Ricahrd Thompson's Sweet Warrior.
All I have to say is: THE ARCHIVES BEFORE WE DIE, NEIL!!!!! Maybe we could make it into a poster (like the old "Ordinary People" poster, remember?) and ship it from concert to concert during his next tour . . . Cheers, - marty
hey.
this may not be the right place, but what's the story about Young and Crazy Horse and tha Bocuse family or familyphoto on "year og the horse"cover?
pv
My guess at this point, something else will be taking the Archives' release of Q407, while I wouldn't guarantee anything, Neil might be conjuring something up to release in the realm of an actual creative album, since LWW was less artistically inclined, really the last purely muse inspired work he did was Prairie Wind. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a brand new album sometime before the year is up, but then again we may see nothing at all, and it could be a genuinely deserved push back (DOUBT IT OH SO MUCH). I think Neil really doesn't want to release it, because when he does, it's like he's saying "alright, I'm finished with new material, now we have to completely focus on the old", and that's something he's said he hates, is putting a nail into the coffin of his artistic career. And this first release has got to be the one he is most obsessed with perfecting, because he has said before his very early work (excepting buffalo springfield and crazy horse) is something he is not at all fond of.
As far as a tour goes, if Stephen Stills can still tour, Neil's perfectly capable, the rumor was that this year he had osteoporosis and was working on rebuilding bone mass, so he should be back next year, not to mention last year's CSNY tour was extremely extensive, and that's the reason his Reprise publicist gave.
I imagine Neil's got 10 more years of tour left in him, but his releases will definitely slow down, and I believe Reprise already said before there would be no accompanying tour FOR the archives specifically. And we all know Neil hates to be a nostalgia act, so he'll tour when he's got new songs to sing; even with EuroTour '01 he had 4 songs from Are You Passionate? to give some new material.
My final reasoning is that the push back means one of three things:
1. Neil is working on something new now and the archives are secondary to new material always.
2. A major change in the structure of Archives Vol. 1 has been initiated by Neil and requires a significant reworking of what was probably a near-finished project.
3. The most unlikely, that Neil needs a break and is vacationing for a period with his family outside California (he has homes in Florida and Hawaii[?]). Neil has such a perverse work ethic though, and since he's not touring, I doubt he's shooting off in prime working season to relaxe, that's what he probably does in winter.
My 2 cents.
I think NY is going to be out supporting his wife's new debut project.
I'll agree with supporting Pegi's new album...but maybe...just maybe...we'll see that live CSNY documentary film and album from the Freedom Of Speech Tour come out that they hinted about late last year.
well, if the reprise site has yet to change, I suppose there is still hope. Why go to all the trouble to trumpet their release via the inserts in Massey Hall if they really weren't going to come out? I'm not believing this "news" until it comes from the record company and/or Neil himself.
Thank goodness for bootlegs...
Pegi has an album coming out.
...and, I'm hoping that the Archives release will not simply be an official release of all my bootlegs. Somehow, I hope Neil had a padlock with only one key.
Im not too fussed about these archives, why? I young enough to not to care! I would personally rather see him putting his effort into making new music and touring with that. A journey through the past can wait till the old horse is dead.
Certainly there's enough current material to keep even the neilophiles happy, but to wait until the "old horse is dead" to release the archives?
Let's all wait until suffocate from greenhouse gasses so we can enjoy what we had.
Maybe what you mean is that your discovery of "don't give a sh.t After the Goldrush Neil" vs. "save the planet Greendale" is all you need right now and that an archive would be redundant.
... let's all wait until we suffocate from greenhouse gasses before we can enjoy what we had... is what I meant to write ...
... and don't we end up beating a dead horse anyway?
Bring on the archives ...

Yeah, it wouldn't make sense to release something like this in the fall, just in time for the holiday gift giving season.
