1971 Toronto Massey Hall Concert Next Up in Archives Series
From Globe and Mail (Canada) comes word that a January 19, 1971 concert at Toronto's Massey Hall will be the next release in the Archives Series.
March 13 is the scheduled release date.
From press release, Neil says:
"This is the album that should have come out between 'After The Gold Rush' and 'Harvest'. David Briggs, my producer, was adamant that this should be the record, but I was very excited about the takes we got on 'Harvest,' and wanted 'Harvest' out. David disagreed. As I listen to this today, I can see why."
From a review of the 1971 concert by Globe and Mail's Jack Batten:
"All of a sudden, without anyone (except a million kids) noticing, Neil Young of Winnipeg and Toronto has arrived as a major pop star, someone to reckon with on the rich, heady, crowd-drawing level of James Taylor. If you don't believe it, you should have been at Massey Hall last night where he played two concerts for sell-out houses of mostly young people who were there not merely to listen but to worship.
"From the opening ovation to the closing and standing ovations, the audience was positively adulatory, rewarding Young with constant bursts of clapping for every trivial move, from sipping water to announcing new songs, a fact I mention not merely because the handclapping was by itself a drag but also because it constantly intruded on any close relationship between Young and the best part of his audience. . . ."
"His songwriting isn't his strongest talent. (His lovely clean voice is.) He does have a knack for writing one- and two-liners that stick in the head, and occasionally, as in a new song he sang about a hired man on his ranch, he comes up with numbers that sustain a mood for their entire duration. . . ."

I hope this live recording should be released in CD/DVD package, not only footage but the complete concert.
Those shelves and others are now being cleared. Fresh rumours have Young's long-imminent archival box set (possibly 32 CDs in all) coming out later this year. In the meantime, the first CD of the Archives: Performance Series -- the stellar, if truncated (at 43 minutes) Live at the Fillmore East: March 6 & 7, 1970 -- was released late last year on Reprise Records, long the label home of Young. The second CD of the series (the forthcoming Massey release) is rumoured to include a DVD component, with film footage or a photo montage from the Toronto shows. No further CDs in the series are planned.
NO FURTHER CD'S IN THE SERIES ARE PLANNED? ARE YOU KIDDING? I HOPE THIS ISN'T TRUE! I LOVE THE IDEA OF THE PERFORMANCE SERIES! I WAS HOPING SOMETHING FROM '76 WOULD BE RELEASED WITH THE EARLY VERSIONS OF LIKE A HURRICANE!
Would be great if they brought out "Tonight's the night" live on the archives. It was a brilliant gig along with Neil's drunken rants and the classic encore.A strange ,but never to be forgotten concert.

As much as I loved the Fillmore release, I was disappointed that it was not a complete concert.
Let's hope the Massey show is complete.
The setlist looks awesome!
As I heard the rumours about the achival box set (32 cds) will be released later this year, I think It's impossible, it's kidding, nobody can afford to buy this, except some die-hard fans or Neil Himself.
Wouldn't it be nice if they decided to release Neil Young BBC In Concert from 1971 on DVD?
As it is from the same tour.
I don't get it....I mean alot of us Neil fans already have many many bootlegs of these shows. Concerr foorage would be a GREAT incentive to go out and buy these shows. Whats with the reluctance? Moving forward...How about taking a page from THE WHO....at the end of their show...the lights come up and an announcement was made..."If you would like a copy (cd) of this evening performance just log onto the WHO'S website or "The Music.com" and place your order." How "f"ing great is that!!! I believe a portion of proceeds go to one of the Who's charity...I also believe that they were also offering a DVD of their performances...Is that too much wishfull thinking?????
Let's be honest. These first two "Archives" releases fall quite a bit short of the mark. Both have been widely traded/bootleged...and in relatively good sound quality. What about the "unreleased" version of Tonight's The Night? How about some TTN tour shows? What about "Homegrown"? These are among the real missing links in the Neil Young discography. I'd also like to hear those Riverboat shows. C'mon Neil...give us what we REALLY want! He should do an online poll to find out what his fans REALLY crave...that'd tell the tale.
I have a bootleg of this show in very good quality, as I did the Fillmore show. I'll also buy this one when it comes out, as it's a great show and I want to support this series. I'm sure I'll listen to all of the Archives released versions more than the bootleg versions. I'm extremely grateful to Neil for finally deciding it's time to start putting this stuff out.
From Billboard —
In related news, Reprise has confirmed a fall release for "Archives Volume I," a vault-clearing project Young has been promising for decades. The collection will comprise 8 CDs and 2 DVDs full of previously unreleased studio and live recordings as well as concert footage and memorabilia.
...32 CDs never really made sense.
agreed on the point that CDs don't make much sense...>DVD-Audio is the way to go! :-) thanks Neil

WHOOPIE! WE'RE GETTING A FULL SETLIST WITH ACTUAL VIDEO ON THE DVD!
Neil needs to release something from 1976... i've heard some stuff from rust radio during that year..its awesome... 1985ish was good too with the international harvesters
I noticed that the Filmore-album was refered to as "Performance Series #2", and the upcoming Massey Hall gig is #3 in the series. Does anyone know what #1 is?
The PS series #1 will be a 1 cd compilation of a weeks worth of live solo shows at the Riverboat Cafe in 66 or 67. There will be no video of the actual concerts , but there may be a dvd component with the release, similar to the fillmore release. PS #1 will be part of the archives vol 1 - 8cd and 2 dvd set.
Clearly, Neil's going to release what he wants to release. Looking back over 40 years of incredible music (both the highs and the lows) who am I to question his judgement? On the other hand, I would love to see an official release of any performances from the "On the Beach" era. The 1974 Bottom Line show comes to mind...might there be any other gems like that in Neil's vaults?
The elusive "Clancy". Will Neil ever release a live version of "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing". He did it in London from the same tour!
i stll dont get why this latest performance archive is disc 3 and the fillmore one was disc 2.
Where is disc1`, or is it just neil being neil ?
I hope the CD/DVD set is released in Canada. Live At The Fillmore was available in CD only here. Had to order the CD/DVD from the states!
What a bummer - I cannpt pre-order this in Canada.
The cd/dvd package is onsale at HMV 333, Yong St. It's very expensive ($39.99). I don't think it's worth at this price.
While we're at it - why isn't Weld on DVD? It might be his best concert performance that was captured for a commerical market -- and the sound quality isn't screwed up like the CD version that Billy Talbot did a real number on...
AS I REMEMBER THAT NEIL HAS SAID THAT ABOUT THE RELEASE OF DVD OF 'WELD' IN THE NEAR FUTURE A FEW MONTHS AGO, BUT IT NEVER HAPPEN. I DON'T KNOW WHY HE NEVER CARE ABOUT THE RELEASE OF PREVIOUS CONCERTS IN DVD, SUCH AS 'WELD' 'UNPLUG' AND THE MOVIE 'JOUNERY THRU THE PAST' 'HUMAN HIGHWAY'
Has anybody thought what the next release in the Performance Series after Massey Hall will be?
I read somewhere that Massey Hall was the last planned release in the current series i.e.in the period covered by the first box set (1963-1972).
If this is the case then the next period would begin with the 1973 tour with the Stray Gators. Could it be that Neil has plans to release this tour as Disc 4 of the NYAPS? This would be one explanation for Time Fades Away
never getting a CD release.
It could include all the songs on TFA plus other songs unreleased at the time but not on TFA such as Lookout Joe,Borrowed Tune, New Mama and Come Along and Say You Will. It would be interesting to hear live Stray Gators versions of the Harvest,ATG and EKTIN songs.
For my money, "Lookout Joe" was the best tune on Tonight's the Night - the raw intensity was/is amazing, and it has a remarkable back-beat -- the song never got the respect it most decidedly deserves. I would thoroughly enjoy seeing him perform it -- any other rarities -- on a full TFA DVD release
on the beach, and time fades away is on of my favorites ,i have them both on vinyl, and this massey hall is great too,its going to be great when the rest comes out of the archives
