And war was never known
The people worked together
And they lifted many stones."

Kathleen Edwards on comparisons of her to Neil, Calgary Herald, Aug '03:
"Oh, absolutely. I read a review of my record and someone said, "She sounds like Lucinda Williams fronting Crazy Horse." I thought, wow, I never really thought that Neil Young was a big influence, but I guess in some way he's a subconscious one. It's a huge compliment. Not only is he a great musician and artist, but I have a lot of respect for the way he leads his life and takes a stand on things that are personally important to him."

I’ve been a fan of Neil Young’s music for years. I heard a story recently about a conversation between Neil Young and another musician after hearing the news of the Chinese Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989. In response to the news of such abhorrent oppression, Mr. Young stated, "Well, keep on Rocking in the free world". As he said it, he realized it had such a catchy sound that he wrote a song based on it. The thing that strikes me when listening to this song is that Mr. Young apparently could not bring himself to not be critical of the free world culture. So, instead of having the lyrics state what was the truth that inspired those words, the song became yet another song critical of western culture and free world policy. This in my opinion is a blatant example of intellectual dishonesty. A man for a moment expresses an honest logical reaction to truth. But as he ponders it, finds that the truth is contrary to his political views, so he turns the very expression into a meaning that suits his political views thereby sacrificing any semblance to the truth that it once might have voiced. How twisted is that?
R Belveal
Hi and thanks for this wonderful site devoted to Neil.
R Belveal, Innaresting story, but the way I heard it, as chronicled in "Shakey", was that Poncho uttered the phrase in response to the fact that touring overseas at that time might not be safe for American artists. I believe he said something like, "Well, guess we better just Keep on rockin' in the free world this year" or something like that...... Neil asked him, " You gonna use that?" Poncho said no, and the song was born.....
So................ "instead of having the lyrics state what was the truth that inspired those words" WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP!
You start out saying that you have been a fan for many years, then make up a story to discredit the man. A good story, but a load of bullshit nonetheless....
I must ask, R Belveal, just how fuckin' twisted is THAT???
and, oh yeah...... as always, thanks for the great site, Thrasher, You Rock!
Well, to be a so-called fan of the man who takes a critical view of the world and not yourself be willing to be critical of the man's ideas if they seem flawed shows you're beyond a fan. You're a brain-dead suck-up groupie. I'm just a fan. Stone me for blaspheme, but I didn't think Neil was immortal, just a great artist. Is there any room amid all of the "feet"kissing for a little intellectual honesty?
