Neil Young is Living with War Everyday
2005 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Ceremony photo by Julie Jacobson
He's from Canada.
He's a hippie.
He's an old man.
He smokes pot.
He's a tree-hugger.
He's a flip-flopper.
And worst of all -- just like Dylan - he can't sing.
Blog-dale has exploded. I've seen the hate and the damage done.
For all of the angry, rage filled hate-mongers, you are absolutely right. For once.
Neil Young is from Canada. He is a hippie. He is an old man. He smokes pot. He is a tree-hugger. He is a flip - flopper. And, just like Bob Dylan - he can't sing.
Now that we have that straight, please do not post comments here regarding information that we are all well aware of. And get your facts straight before spewing your venom because you're putting sponges in the bells I once rung.
There comes a time when we're all living with war. And it seems as if that time has come here at Thrasher's Wheat. The comments have been both supportive and nasty.
So today, tell us something about yourself, your faith and beliefs. Your hopes and dreams. As for Thrasher?
I'm living with WAR in my heart everyday
I'm living with WAR right now

I have been waiting over 5 years for someone to do an album of the nature of "Living with War". Another Michael Moore is the kick up the backside the American government needs. In my opinion, George Bush Jr. is a dangerous man and should not be president (Here come the Aussalt rifles). Why I think this, is a different story, but I am Western European, and I am very cynical about George Bush Jr. The war in Iraq was over oil, not weapons of mass destruction. Stuff the comments that no one should question the president of America. When there are no decent election candidates, one of the slackers gets the job (here comes more gunfire). Good on you Neil, you will not regret writing those songs.
Yo Neil, heard you're doing a WHOLE album against Bush ... Ever think about doing a WHOLE ALBUM instead against the Islamo-fascists who stone women and chop of the heads of gay people? No. Because you're brain dead. Idiot! Wake up.
Craig - you're from a red state, aren't you? "Red means run son..."
my heart is so thankful, knowing that neil is putting it out there and adressing the mess bushco has made in the world. please, wake up, all you that believe anything good can come from this war. i love my kids, and i want much more for them than total annihalation.
i have been following/seeing neil for about 3 decades, and am quite accustomed to the haters and the closed-minded folk, who only like neil when he does what they like. grow up! he writes what HE wants. he ain't singin' for pepsi, he's singing for peace. and anyone who claims he did this album to boost record sales-ha! neil has one of the strongest, most devoted fan-bases around, and he does quite well. he always will.
if neil made a political album, then he definitely has something to say, because he does not typically step into that arena.
great blog-thanks!
Well, now, so perhaps rock is not dead, nor perhaps American passion. Good or bad or "Shocking Pink" bad, Neil's new work has already scored. When even CNN gets it that what Neil sings about matters to a whole lot of people, rock (and Neil) still have relevance. So, go gentle on the messengers such as our faithful Thrasher. Read some history about the American founders and you'd understand why Jefferson and Adams would line up to buy this record. Well I hope Neil Young will remember, we all need him around (anyhow). Keep on RITFW Neil!!!
Huh, people indignant, sarcastic and threatening about an artist expressing himself; dissenters should shut up.
Doesn't sound very American to me.
Tom
I just had to write to give you "another Canadians point of view" on Mr. Young's new album and the controversay it has generated. First of all I want you to know that Canadians are well aware that we enjoy the freedoms we do because of the military power of our neighbours to the south. Secondly, most Canadians support your gov't in moments of crisis ie. 9/11. In fact, we are for the most part as much as "American" as our American brothers. However, I think we would all agree that there are far too many questions that have left to be truthfully answered regarding the motivation for the invasion of Iraq. Your young men and women have been put in "Harm's Way" and I think the only question to be asked is ,"Is the reason valid?" If you can justify American sacrifice, then I guess it's worth it.There are approx. 2500 Canadian troops (I know big deal) in Afganistan supporting the UN mandate. They too,, are in "Harm's Way", but the cause appears to be valid and to date the Canadian people have supported it.I worship the ground that Neil Young walks on and I believe that it is not a question of whether he supports your troops, it is a question of ."Is and was the invasion justified, and if not, who then should be held accountable?". Obviously, the "buck stops" at the President's door. Should Neil have come out so strongly on this issue? I guess his political conscience has answered that question!!!!
It's about time for the political Neil to emerge again. I'm one of the "400 people" who really didn't like Praire Wind. I ran in to Neil during the Greendale Tour and he seemed as if he was carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. Hopefully, he will get the same amount of public recognition and support for his anti-war efforts that he has for the Praire Wind material. Go Neil!
Tell Neil to go back to canada.
And just would Neil Young know about War. Go back to Canada, you can't sing anayway
I'm just surprised that Neil hasn't been attacked for "When God Made Me". Who knew that song was only a precursor of more powerful statements to come? If Howie Klein's glowing assessment of LWW is even half close, this album's going to be huge.
Now the cynic might say that after the last few albums, Neil needs a major hit and all this media attention is merely a means to an end. Personally, I think Neil's saying things that need to be said. As an artist, he has the right to express himself through his craft and sell as many damn albums as he can.
Those nattering nabobs of negativism weren't going to buy the album, anyway.
I'm very hopeful that this will be a solid album. However, if he takes an obvious "Michael Moore" approach, he is going to turn people off and ultimately lose credibility. An artist can (and should) respond differently to events than, say, a novelist or journalist. There are a lot of people (my self included) who are not happy with how the war is being prosecuted and feel lied to (and continue to feel lied to). However, this is not Vietnam, no matter how badly some people want to color it to be. Neil is 60 and has had a lot of ups and downs, like all of us. I hope it is a nuanced expression and not a characture of himself. If so, he could come off as a caracture of Jane Fonda. By the way, being Canadian really has so little to do with anything.
As a european it is a very unpleasant surprise to notice how much hate and intolerance there is in the land of the free. The nation that stands for freedom and democracy? Neil, keep using you´re freedom of speech and keep on rockin´ in the real free world (at least in Europe or Canada).
The most disturbing thing of all is these scared people who equate criticism of a President with hate of the country. To them if you disagree with the current administration, even if they were lying abouttheir reasons to go to war, you hate the country and its government.
I love my country, and I love my form of government. I love free speech. What I don't love is this current President and his administration. To argue that I hate my country, or Neil hates is country is simple ignorance and intolerance of diverse views, and in this case, completely rational views of a corrupt administration that did want to go to war and found a way to sell it to the public by lying and appealing to fear.
The number of reactionary republicans that have come out of the woodwork is downright disturbing, and their level of ignorance is and itolerance is certainly revealing about what goes on in teh minds of those who live with fear in theri hearts everyday.
Hopefully love will come to them one day.
If Neil was American, I would be more interested in what he had to say. After all, its the USA & England's war, not Canada's. If he doesn't like it, tell him to complain to CBC. Its not like Canada has been much help in Iraq, anyway. Typical. They want our help, but have no interest is helping us.
Our European friends who read and hear all the indignant and threatening speech surrounding this issue should not be concerned. It's just that, talk. Talk show culture and the internet have spawned a lot of fulminating blowhards, but they never do anything else. They're too fat and lazy to actually act the way they talk, that's for sure. Sitting at a keyboard and spewing is just idle jibber jabber. The truth hurts and they howl.
Tom
I'm 100% behind Neil on this effort.
Not of the Vietnam generation...
Not male...
Not a druggie burnout...
Not a 'non-believer'...
Not 'straight'...
A U.S. citizen with immediate family foreign born...
AND 100% Neil fan...
we all have a responsibility to make society better for all. God bless Neil and keep him safe!

Well I'm interested in what Neil has to say whether he was born in the US or not. What I'm not interested in is hearing what people have to say who would factor Neil's country of origin into whetehr what he says is relevant or not. Such people mostlikely never graudated from highschool, is my guess.
Interestingly enough, while hicks from red states equate "American" with being from the United States, anyone from the western hemisphere is "American." So Neil is indeed an American, having been born in Canada (which, for the poorly educated republicans, is in the our same continent of North America) and having lived in the US the vast majority of his life.
I was under the impression he was an American citizen as well, not that any of this is relevant, but I could be wrong. Someone who thinks he has no standing to criticize our government becasue he was born in Canada probably has nothing of substance to say for themselves.
"All I want is a song of love."
I'm also hoping this will be a good album - but I'm worred that an album recorded in 3 days may not be his best effort. Sponteneity aside, are we going to get "distorted noise" or soulful tone from Old Black. And why not the Horse backing? Questions, questions, questions...(and concerns)
trying to kep my BP down but...I'm relatively new to this "Internet community" stuff, but I think one must be a SICK sonofabitch to go to any artist-oriented website and start bashing the artist...like a redneck going to a gay bar then complaining 'bout all the damn queers...
I'd LOVE to get my facts straight, but like somebody said "I don't know who to trust anymore."
It's been reported that ALL of the hi-jackers were SAUDIS not Iranians or Iraquis, and oilman Bush (both of 'em) are in bed with the Saudi oilmen...
Lastly, for all you Bible thumping Merkins out there, those hi-jackers thought God was on THEIR side...
I just found this website (great, by the way) after finding out that Neil Young was going to release a new album about the war. What is going on here? Who are these people who come to this web site and write this vitriolic garbage? It makes me think I accidentally surfed to Rush Limbaugh's site. Don't these people have jobs (or are they doing this on company time?)? Does anyone know when this album will come out? How about tour dates?

These people are just terrified of others opinions and ignorant of the difference between criticizing the president and being some sort of America hating terrorist lover. They apparently lack any drama or substance in their real life so try to stir it up on the web. Even after that webmaster has asked them to knock it off.
And the comment about "Listen to Carlos Mencia" made me want to throw up. He is a hateful person who steals other comedians material and coasts off jokes about him being a Mexican, even though his real name is Ned Holness and he is German and Honduran. It's insulting to mention somebody so talentless on a website dedicated to Neil.
well pass the peace pipe and popcorn as we
wait for the madman from Tehran to blow us
all to simtherines....
I predict a resurgance in the old "America, Love It Or Leave It' bumper stickers... For the Hate-mongers; Y'all don't get the point, We DO love it, that is why we criticize, It hurts to watch your own country be led down a road to ruination....Ya know, "Everybody needs a friend, who can tell you you're just pissin' in the wind."
Thanks for being that kind of friend, Neil.......
I'm in the military, and i don't appreciate the album, just so you know.
I'm not in the military, and I do appreciate the album. But if I were in the military, i would still appreciate the album, because someone risking my life by taking us to war based on misinformation and manipulation because they are beholden to the military industrial complex, well that would piss me off.
Hey Joe! I am not in the military, but I am a veteran... US Army, 75 to 79, joined when I was 17, and I thank you for your service, dude. This album and what is said is what we all served, and serve for... Constitutional rights, it's easy to protect freedom of speech when that speech doesn't offend, but in reality, it's the offensive speech that needs the most defense...thanks again, Joe.
Thanks for being in the military and all, but what do you mean you don't appreciate the album? You've read the lyrics to one song and heard a few rumors at best. Might want to hold off on judging the album there buddy.
Feb. 23, 1998: Osama bin Laden issues a joint fatwa with Ayman al-Zawahiri declaring it the duty of all Muslims to kill "the Americans and their allies."
Let's see, who was President?? Maybe Mr. Young
could use a history lesson when he starts blasting
a president. I'm no Bush fan but let's have some
COMMON SENSE! Take a look at the enemy, they
want to kill all of us, including Mr. Crazy Horse
himself. Wake up to reality.
Well put, horsewifnoname. Dissent is as American as apple pie, as is objection to authority, especially when that authority is clearly incompetant and unworthy of respect.
Tom
Anaon, perhaps you should wakeup to reality. your chances of dying from Cancer or in an Auto wreck are 10,000 times greater than your chances of dying from terrorism.
And I know you wingers are all ignorant, but have you ever considered the rol of our Military in creating such hatred for the West? Both currently and more importantly as a result of the cold war and our military presence all over the globe.
I'm no fan of religion in general, especially Islam, but to just write off the whole religion as a bloodthirsty group out to kill us all is just sheer ignorance.
You are a dupe. Bush has scared you shitless. Yea 9/11 was awful and scary, but not nearly as scary to me as the power grab bythe executive branch and the handout of our tax dollars to the military industrial complex.
If you are so scared, then learn to fear things that actually threaten you and endanger your life.
No doubt you as a repug hick you aren't even talented enough to live in a major city, so what are you so scared of? Coward.
Osama Bin Laden is not Iran or Iraq and represents no nation. We should be hunting for him, while encouraging and demonstrating the true western values. We have not before and we most certainly aren't now. How can anyone be happy or proud living in America today while our soldiers and innocent people are being killed. The war was a mistake in the first place and even most right-wing nuts wish we hadn't gotten into it at all and all of the so-called hindsight and second guessing has proved beyond a reasonable doubt that to invade Iraq was a huge mistake.
Just for the record, in a recent interview Neil said he doesn't even smoke pot anymore.
I just got home from the showing of the Neil Young film, Prarie Wind, that played here this evening.
I took my 6 year old daughter. She thought his voice was wonderful (I don't even think that) and that it was a great film.
Ironically, we were listening to NPR on the way to the theater when George Bush came over the airwaves. She told me to turn it off.
Again, this is not my mandate. I like to listen to the news and I don't turn off ole George when he comes on the TV or radio.
I must be doing something right, because I am teaching my child to think for herself.
My child has a heart of gold, may she always continue to look at the world with a critical eye. Kids like her may save us some day.
There Comes A Time...
For what it’s worth I’d like to add that Neil Young, or anyone else for that matter, has the total right to comment on any subject they wish. It is called Freedom of Speech, for which the United States of America are torch bearers. Basically, if you think something stinks then you have the right to shout about it. People out there might say that any criticism of the President is un-American or un-Patriotic. Too f…ing bad! These are dangerous times my friend. America has had some good Presidents and not so good ones. The jury is still out on Bush (as it is on our Blair). Are Bush’s intentions totally honourable? Is he representing the free world in his quest to rid us of global terrorism? Or are the motives of Bush more selfish and cynical in influencing there position in an oil rich region? (If it is let him burn in f…ing hell!). Bush may yet come out of this a hero, but only if there is ultimately a stable Middle East. If the Arabs feel they are being shat upon by the West then we need to address these problems. If the Muslims are hell bent on taking on the West to impose their Islamic Order then we have no alternative but to mess with them big time. When the President issues a thinly veiled threat that the nuking of Iran is not out of the question then we all need to ask ourselves what the f…. is going on? The invasion and bulldozing of Iraq was a major turning point. Was it justified or was it just a show of arrogant aggression? The United Nations urged caution but none was heeded. Saddam was a cruel and ruthless tyrant and we’re glad to see the back of him but no weapons of mass destruction were ever found. There are other tyrants out there, surely Bush can’t think he can beat up on all of them? He needs to shelve his Ramdo DVD’s and get real. I think Neil Young is a big fan of the American Ideals but he won’t shirk from speaking out if he thinks things are out of control. We all need to take stock of the situation and try to make a difference.

I can't believe all of you. Neil can write and sing about anything he likes. Wait till you hear it before passing judgement. If you don't like Neil then don't buy the CD and don't read his websites. There are plenty of us ardent fans out there to do him justice.
Go on neil, we'll be listening to you anyway.
Apart from this, some french newspaper has an article about the new album : http://www.liberation.com/page.php?Article=375712
(french only).
And Thrasher, you're doing a great job. Thanks a lot.
Wow! Neil Young coming out with a controversial album! Shocking! I actually look forward to listening to a raucous Neil Young electric album. I thought Prairie Wind was a little to boring for my taste. As far as "W" goes. I believe he feels he is doing what is right for his country. Whether he is or not, it is too early to tell. So Neil Young can criticize all he wants. There is nothing wrong with that. I just hope the album has some real musical quality to it because in my mind, Neil is about the music not running the government.
Lazerlou said: "No doubt you as a repug hick you aren't even talented enough to live in a major city, so what are you so scared of? Coward."
How do you know where I live or who I am??
If you had any idea who I interact with you'd be
kissing my ass..
Listen, before 9/11 I thought and spoke like you.
Since then I decided to educate myself by reading
a lot of books by thinkers on all sides regarding
just who the enemy is. Most of my liberal friends
want to blame everything on Bush and don't even
entertain the thought of looking at the real menace
we face. I do want to look at it and understand it.
Does that make me a "coward"?
People of your ilk attack on a personal level and
bring the discourse down to drivel. I'm finding
that the "tolerant" left is only tolerant to others that
think like them. I'm a centrist with no party affiliation
and listen with an open mind to lefties, righties
and those in the middle. What's wrong with that?
Get your head out of the sand and stop insulting
"hicks" Mr. Tolerance.
And that reading you did informed you of the role of the coldwar in creating the biggest war machine known to man? How segments of third world countries learned to hate us because we used them and set up military bases all over the world, including in the holy land of a bunch of poor, uneducated fundamentalists?
Did your reading lead you to the dire warnings by President Eisenhower (R) to beware the influence of the "Military Industrial Complex" 50 years ago?
Did your reading include books on cultural and economic hegemony and the reactions of other cultures to cultural, miliatry and economic domination?
All 9/11 did was make people like you fearful and full of hate and unwilling to cast blame where blame is due. The cold war is over. It is time we started to use our ecominic might for good, not to perpetuate the dominance of corporate interests that thrive on conspicuous consumption and war.
P.S. anon,
"If you had any idea who I interact with you'd be
kissing my ass.."
is perhaps the most revealing and funniest response I've ever received in blogland. I'm sure the people you intereact with are impressive. Cheers.
As if I didn't have enough reasons already to love Neil Young!
Bush needs a psychological evaluation, seriously.
coldbowl, you just keep on proving to everyone what a buffoon you are. read Lou's post again..... He never said that he interacts with folks that would make us want to kiss his ass, anon said that and he was quoting him in his reply. and you must be a very busy guy, being and engineer (makin' sure the train runs on time, cool!) AND in the energy business, AND economics (teacher, huh?) How do you have time to get all drunk and worked up and posting here? Jus wonderin' eh?
Lazerlou said: "All 9/11 did was make people like you fearful and full of hate and unwilling to cast blame where blame is due..."
Fearful or pragmatic. Was paying attention to Hitler
when he said he had the "final solution" being fearful?
I'm not a hateful person, just willing to look at reality.
You may hate this country, but name one country in this world who has shed as much blood for other countries as we have..name one country who gives as
much money to other countries as we do.
You're so full of hate for those who don't think like
you and for this country it's really tragic and sad.
Definition of Liberal: "not narrow in opinion or
judgement - tolerant" you are the antithesis of this
definition Mr. Tolerant - have a good life and may
this country be here to protect you forever.
1. When did I ever claim to be "tolerant"???? Whre did you get that idea? I'm no moderate liberal wuss. I am tolerant of differnt religions, differnt thought, different lifestyles. I'm nottolerant fo people who continue to support this president. Fearful cowards like you should be put down.
2. That you would compare a bunch of religious fundamentalist living in caves without a country to Hitler shows how poorly you think about these issues. Further, you appealed to Nazis/Hitler, which everyone knows disqualifies you from further participation in any Internet argument, ever. You lose automatically (not that yuor YOU HATE AMERICA! argument was really holding much water in teh first place)
3. I love my country a lot more than you do bud. I love my government a lot more than you do. I just fear the rich white guys running it in the executive branch. If you actully loved what this country stands for you would not be willing to allow this administration to piss on the 4th amendment. Anyone who supports GWB in his warrantless searches is someone who hates this country and everything it stands for. The argument that Bush can violate the 4th amendment based on a grant of war powers is one of the most anti-American acts I could possibly think of. And if you actually love dthis country, you would appreciate dissent. You would eb skeptical of Bush's wanton violations of the establishment clause. And most of all, you would actually care how our country and its foreign policy is viewed by the rest of the world.
So cowardly anon, go sit on a spoon you ignorant America-hating simpelton, and for god's sake, go read the 4th amendment. See how easy that is? YOU HATE AMERICA BY SUPPORTING A PRESIDENT WHO UNDERMINES ITS LEAGL FOUNDATIONS AND STANDING IN THE WORLD.
Oh, and I hope your life is terrible and one of your children shoots you with one of your handguns.
Way to go Lazerlou - you're really showing your
true colors now. I hope the rest of your admirers
take pleasure in your wishing someone get's shot
by their own child. Just brilliant - your just another
breathing organism who is "food for the moon".
What an arrogant jerk you are spewing more hateful lowlevel drivel...typical.
Yea anon, at least these colors don't run! And are frickin' funny.
Neil is anti-terrorist and Bush is anti-American
I prefer my Neil Young surreal and apolitical. Fuck Bush, but I don't want to hear a bloody album about him.
He's from the north
Has never sat on a Southern man's porch
We'll have to deal with the froth and the bait
as we wait
for his debate
But hither and thither;
is no reason
We sit here wondering aloud
Is it Treason?
Oh poor Neil stuck in the 60's
Oh poor Neil at 60
Looking for one last hurrah
To hang his hat on from a far
Tisk, tisk Mr. Can man from the north
Wish we could wisk you…
Dis you…
But, alas I have no stage
No lackeys too page
No cash or Asses too burn
I have to work for a livin and earn
listin to your disin about my girl
Almost causes me to hurl.
Tisk, tisk Mr. Can man from the north.
You feel the sands of time ebbin away?
Wishin for one last day?
You are not Peter Pan - MAN.
Not James Kirk.
Not even close to Kurt.
So stop your disin
For you will always be stuck in a rut
Wishin for the 60’s at 60
God bless my Girl!
LazerLoser,
You are a crass indignant narrow-minded sycophant.
If Neil were to suddenly stop you would have your head so far up his ass you would need surgery to have it removed. Do you have a life outside Neil's ass?
Have you accomplished anything beyond a BLOG and Neil’s ass? Sports, Family, started a company, gone fishing with your Dad? Taken your Mommy to a nice lunch? Sports???? WELL HAVE YOU!
I bet you are one big fat blob with no life outside the confines of your lover's grip....um I mean your keyboard and with your head up Neil's ass.
TYPICAL 5 Min in LazerLosers life:
Toke, type, eat chips, eat doughnuts...."yummy doughnuts". Type, toke, drink diet beverage, type, be a complete ASS. Toke, "Man I am funny"...Type, toke, eat chips, type.
Very sad LazerLoser I would hate to be you.
There is a process called critical thinking and this not the act of being insulting too others who do not ascribe to your wussy French Canadian philosophy of life. Now that I have insulted you it is only fair that I offer to meet you any place, in the US, to continue this discourse in a more…um traditional fashion. Yeeeesss let’s call it traditional values vs. wuss. Now, It has been a while since I have had the pleasure of being in the ring for a one-on-one debate, but you know what they say….It’s like ridin a bike.
In short, you are low-breed, common, fat assed liberal who believes in the bigotry of mediocrity.
Sincerely,
Mr. Man

Don’t take anyone’s word about what Islam is about, find out for yourself. Please study the Koran and the teachings of Islam. It will scare you; remember the Satanic Versus? The idea that there is a moderate Islam is a Myth!
The tenants of Islam are clear: Deception, conquest, subjugation and conversation to Islam or death. There is no middle ground, no tolerance in the Islamic worldview.

You forgot to mention that Neil rocks with all the words describing him.
Anyways thanks for the info and also the shout out.
"How do you know where I live or who I am?? If you had any idea who I interact with you'd be
kissing my ass.."
I don't think I'd ever be kissing your ass sweetie. I don't give a flip where you live. It's your attitude that folks have responded to. We all have the right to our opinion in this country and we simply don't agree with you. Get over it.
Neil you're the man! Thanks!!!!!
Marie said:It's your attitude that folks have responded to. We all have the right to our opinion in this country and we simply don't agree with you.
If being open to other views that may conflict with
mine is a bad attitude then so be it. I don't start
attacking people's character like some do on this
site because I don't agree. All I ever said is
I'm reading up on who the enemy is. I think one of
the other anonymous posters stated very well just
who the enemy is. They're not going away -
whether Bush is president or if it will be Hillary.
If you think it's only "wingers" who want to know
thine enemy, then you are really stuck in the 60's.
Chili and Lazerlou are one and the same.
Think about it....Chili and LazerLou have the same viciousness, decorum and weird since of humor.
I have been looking over these post for 6 days now and I beleive that Wheattrasher and LazerChilli are in cahoots to stir up controversy on this tread. IOW - It's all about traffic hence cash.
Yes. It saddens me also. But, if you pay attention to the three (buffoons) It is plain as day. Visit their websites, read how they interact. We have all been set upon each other like dogs...And, some took it hook line and sinker.
Do not post here or they win.
Myspace is a magnet for phonies.
Boat on HBO? I don't know what you mean. I don't think I look like Rosie O'Donnell at all. Of course, I don't watch her show and hardly ever watch TV, so It's hard for me to recall what she looks like these days. I guess I might be squinting in my picture a little, because the light above me is WAY too bright. I can see every bit of dust on my desk under that thing.
I have been a Neil Young fan since the 1960's. He was right about Kent State and the Viet Nam War, but now I think he's losing it. Ohio was a song about a war that was so wrong that everyone knew it.
We were not attacked by the Vietnamese, but were so afraid of Communism that our government was willing to shoot students who protested against the war. Now it seems fashionable to attack our President, even though he is fighting for all of us in a noble cause. Neil pokes fun at Bush for using God as a tool to rally us around him. We were viciously attacked by these people. The radical Islamics want us all dead, no matter what the cost. God is being forgotten in this country and I fear nobody cares. I think Neil needs a reality check to figure out if he really meant to write " Let's Roll" or not. Talk about flip flop.
I have always loved his music but I think he's gone over the line this time.
Oh, he doesn't bug me. What's homophobia got to do with anything, though?
Astrology? I'm not the least tiniest bit interested in astrology. I think it's a crock. Blogger adds signs on there when you put your birthday. I may take my birthday out for that reason.
You look at demographic maps for a living? That's cool.
...Oh, and I'm not gay, either.
Cute joke. Ha!
I'm up here because I love it here! It's cold in winter (what's a little coldness when you've got a cuddle buddy?) but it's pretty in summer.
I really should read more about ANWR itself. I've only read arguments about it.
Ha! Sorry...
You don't know what a cuddle buddy is? No offense, but maybe that's why sometimes you seem so uptight(?)
;-)
I have to say, there are a lot of good comments here. I mean, a lot of praise for Living With War, and not just here but everywhere else. Today I actually heard "Shock and Awe" on my local radio station. As for the entire album, I think it's the best thing we've had since Bush stole the election. Many thanks to Neil! He's given me a voice and a way of transforming that illusion of hoplessness I had somehow gotten myself into. Can't wait for the CD!
Keep singing your blues chili bowl. What do you care any more. Your man got what he wanted. He can't run again, unless he DECIDES to make himself King. Hail to Bush!! Yea, right. DISSENT everyone! The thought police or on the loose.

Earth to Neil - when you gonna wake up?
Bill,
Stop for one minute and think about what you are saying...Okay that is a stretch you thinking and all.
Put...The...Bong...Down and back away form the sleeping pills.
Get a real life you loser!
Gheeeeeezus you have a big 3D L on your forehead.
Hey Chili pepper, you're the real deal! I like you. You're the real deal! I want to know what's in your heart though. You talk all this shit on here but nobody gives a crap about your dumb ass scare tactics and your stupid bravado. You think you're such a man, open up that heart of yours. Tell us all what's really going on. I'm serious. I want to know what's really bugging you. Someone happens to disagree with your ranting and you go fucking ballistic. I think you're a sick man. But we're here to listen if you can get past your ego. If you won't, all we can do is ignore you.
I agree with you about the rich. One thing baffles me about some conservatives, though. Why are they not in favor of universal health insurance? Paying for someone's surgery so they can become a part of the workforce sure beats paying them to sit around because they are in immobilzing pain.
Good job chili pepper! You almost got it when you said, "believe it or not, Chili wants EVERYONE, in the WORLD to do great! to live happy healthy lives and all to be rich and happy..." I was waiting for you to go deeper with that. You fell off your chair when you started mouthing off about everything you KNOW. I'm not interested in people's theories about how to be secure in this world. There ain't no security, period. Wars have been occurring since the beginningless beginning. Show me something new. Show me how to get beyond your us versus them mentality, how to overcome fear instead of reacting to it by giving everyone the war mentality. The battle is in yourself, chili pepper. It's not out there. I don't care how big you are in the eyes of the world, or how much might you have and how big your army is. What I care about is you getting a bigger view and a much more innovative way of dealing with the world's problems.
Get it right chili dog, this is not about hatred. We don't HATE the President, we simply have no use for his policies, his war-mongering, and his lies. You want to go on supporting that non-sense go right ahead. Your solution to everything is let's just blow them away. But they never get blown away. They just keep coming back. Learn a few basic truths before you start trying to apply those age-old failed "solutions" on the world. Here's a very basic one for you: Get a big stick and a machete. Determine which is the left end of the stick and which is the right. Try lopping off the left side of it. What's left, do you still have a stick? Yes. It may be a little shorter by now but it still has a left and a right. Am I right? Okay. Keeping lopping away. Now observe what is happening to that stick. It's just getting smaller and smaller. Watch out though, that next strike could cost you the tip of your fingers. How do we fix that? Do we get a bigger machete? Duhhh.
Nobody's talking about us versus them here chili dog. I don't give a damm how big the "threat" appears to be. You'll have to go somewhere else if you're obsessed with war. We're only addressing the idiocy of doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
I think, deep down, you really do know better than that.
"Nobody's talking about us versus them here chili dog. I don't give a damm how big the "threat" appears to be. You'll have to go somewhere else if you're obsessed with war. We're only addressing the idiocy of doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. "
Well dear brother Bill, I'm not trying to be snied here, but how about a solution? Do you have any ideas how to stop a MOTIVATED psyche that wants to obliterate us by the hundreds of thousands? What is your idea? Name one leader in this country who really has any idea what do to. Or perhaps it's lie you said, you don't really care how big the threat is.
I realize that now you and the rest of the people who don't want to deal with this will call me a "coward" shivering in my boots believing the evil administration's fear mongering.
Well I don't listen to them, I listen to terrorism experts from all over the globe who paint a picture
as bleak as global warming is to AL Bore. We need to deal with it. Got any suggestions?
I know it's pretty lofty to be a "War is not the answer" bumper sticker person, what is the answer?
The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind.
I have a suggestion though, ever try dealing with your own fear and foolish bravado? You think you can put out the fire by spreading more fires? How did we get into this mess in the first place? Wasn't it all on the basis of a lie? Ever heard of malignant egophrenia?
"History was a cruel joke of overconfidence."
Now we're all mad as hell because we've stirred up a hornet's nest. It's not going to matter what I say to you. You're stuck in the blow them away mode. We might have to take some drastic measures to get things turned around, but we dont' have to repeat the mistake of dousing the fire with gasoline instead of water.
"The problems we face cannot be solved by the same level of thinking that created them."
That much I know. I think we all just need a new pair of glasses. "Stay the course" is the mantra of the insane.
Sorry for the mis-quote Neil. That should be "cruel judge" even though I would consider it a cruel joke as well.
....own fear and foolish bravado....
this started way before Bush was president.
I didn't say "stay the course" I just said we have to deal with an enemy that SAYS and plans on murdering us
in large numbers.
You can't come up with any intelligent anything to deal with a very real threat. Just keep throwing insults at
people who are willing to look at reality.
I suppose the wacko in Iran who can't wait to "wipe"
Israel off the map is just foolish bravado too.
The hornet's nest has been mad and stirred up for decades and maybe, just maybe the hatred being taught in madrassas and mosques all over the world could have something to do with it.
Quit thinking with your emotions and let logic take over.
You think you know what reality is? Better look again. You think intellect is all there is in this world? Did your mom and dad use their intellects when they decided you should be among the living? How can there be intellect without emotion or vice versa? You think you can separate us all with that kind of an appeal? Better look again. You're still caught up in the same old song and dance about staying the course. Drunk with rage! Calling all of us peaceniks a bunch of pansies. Better look again. I think your pants are on fire.
"I'm living with war in my heart everyday."
same ole bumper sticker cliche's
as if all of us don't want peace.
again - you offer no solution mr. peacenik
perhaps a group hug might help.
Oh, like you don't have a bumper sticker supporting stupidity?
Get it right Mr. Illogical, I offer YOU no solution. That would be like throwing pearls before swine. But we love those swine anyway, and yes, I could use a group hug right now, thank you.
"MI6, Britain's secret intelligence service, has identified six Pakistani scientists working in Iran's nuclear bomb program who have been "advising al-Qaida on how to weaponize fissionable materials it has now obtained."
ignorance is bliss, isn't it?
As I was saying before being interrupted by the poor infant with a diaper rash...
Neil Young's LIVING WITH WAR is the best thing I've heard since George Harrison's final release of BRAINWASHED.
Way to go Neil, we love you too.
Hey, hey, my, my...
Diaper rash making you cry again?
Now come on big boy, how can you be so judgemental? Did you do what I told you? Do the experiment! Get a big stick and a machete and follow the above directions. But think each time before you let the machete fall. Just what on earth are you trying to accomplish?
I leave you with the following question:
One voice cries from the torment of a diaper rash. Another voice is crying in the wilderness.
To who should I run?
I think it's okay that we have diferent views. I think we are each other's shadow. Both are necessary as a means of getting us further ahead. It's been good chatting with you Chili. Just not sure this was the appropriate place for that. I've learned a few things about myself. I still believe there is an imbalance in our country between those who press on with visions of war and wanting the world to be more like us, and those who feel they hear the voice of conscience. Who's to say which way is right. Can't judge that really. But I'm right where I need to be at this time and so are many, many others. Take care of yourself and try to meditate.
Roger and Out
What spiritual arrogance you have Bill..you're a malignant narcissist. You think you're such a lofty person of conscience?
Yet, I'm referred to as a diaper rash and "want the world to be like us" type person, what abominable low level you exhibit! You can't even admit or say we have an enemy, and I'm a scared war-azoid because I say it exists? Wow!!
The shadow I see is the one I left behind when September 11th made me start studying real quick. If that makes me a "hate" monger, than you are even more closed minded than I thought, glad you're "over and out". It never fails that people like you start saying nasty personal slurs and takes where
it doesn't need to go. I'm a "common-sense-o'crat"
and generally interact with other same common-sensers from all sides of the issue.
From the beginning of posting on this site (and I'm not a regular Neil poster) I have stated in a calm way that we have a formidable enemy. which is totally agreed upon by heavyweights from every genre.
I was hoping that Neil would take note of Islamo-Fascism-since it EXISTS and we have to deal with it.
But hey, if his album can help end the madness in any kind of way, I'll be there rejoicing.
" It's alright Ma, it's life and life only"
Wow! I must have hit a very sensitive chord in you. I'm more worried about you than I am the enemy. What's so lofty about a few simple truths? Go take up weight lifting are something. You have a lot of rage inside that needs to be given some attention.
Bless you my friend. May you find peace and serenity and most of all, a conscience. But hopefully not at the expense of someone else's life.
(Anybody out there know a good shaman?)
One final thing here. Let me suggest the Rant and Rave section of Craigslist if you really want to vent your anger and fight with the community. I tried reasoning with you and it didn't seem to help. You have your own way of seeing things. That's fine. We exchanged a bit of name calling and other kinds of stupidity and that too didn't help matters. Do yourself a favor and get away from that FOX NEWS channel for a while. Take a walk in the woods. Clear your head. I think those are good suggestions. You want anything better than that go talk your man Rumsfeld.
For anyone reading these comments I am sure that blind spots can be seen on both sides of the issues. I'll be the first to admit that I have not mindfully dealt with certain serious concerns on Chili's part. To him the threat is very real and he is right to voice his conerns about that. I want to understand that as much as possible but unfortunately it is not easy for me to have a dialog of this nature on this particular site. What a strange mix this is of music and politics. My deepest apologies to anyone I might have offended. I do agree with the message of LWW. Like the man I've been engaging, I too am feeling the pain of a threat I see as very real. What good is peace if there is no freedom. How we get there is, of course, the main issue.
Bill boy - would you please stop associating me with the Chilli guy!! He is your flip side, I am in the middle.
Your blind spot is big enough to slip a nuke suitcase through. I can't out "mean" you nor do I want to.
You have to look at your own rage, I haven't raged here. But I understand you're mostly preachin' to the choir on this site. Thanks for suggesting craigslist,
how kind.
So carry on and throw some more crap at my character, I know you and your moveon.org types are cheering you on.
adios
p.s. by coincidence, my brother-in-law is a shaman and happens to think much like you. But he shows respect to people who offer different views and doesn't reduce discussions to drivel.
I admit that I am just a boy when it comes to engaging in issues as emotional as politics. I am sorry this had to look so ugly. But I would not have gained much from just sitting around repressing feelings. Perhaps you are much more skilled at making comments than I am. I don't know who you are and how it is that I have associated you with Chili. All I have is maybe a small hint. Again I apologize. There is no question that I too could benefit from a shaman. That may be why I raved so much about getting a new mind. Thank you for pointing out the size of my blind spot. I will see what I can do to fill it in with the truth by questioning authority.
Okay, to the man in the middle, I now see where the confusion is. I had assumed that Chili had made himself Anonymous. So you can disregard my drivel. I eat my words. My apologies to him as well for making that assumption.
Bill,
I graciously accept your apology. That was big of you. I too apologize if I said anything to attack
your character. I believe many of us with various outlooks share a conscience that only wants the best for this country as well as humanity....
I am one who eats his words. Thank you so much for that acceptance. I wish us all the very best.
