Neil Young Film Coastal on April 17 + "Daryl Hannah shows husband Neil Young's softer side in new tour film" | BBC
Directed by Daryl Hannah
"He just has an absolute, uncanny commitment to his creative muse," she argues.
"He's not driven by financial interests, he's not driven by self-aggrandisement, he's not driven by anything other than that creative force, and it's pretty incredible to witness.
"Having spent so much time with him, my perception is that he's completely guileless. He has a lot of warmth and innocence, so I wanted to show that."
...
Hannah reveals her husband was harassed during the first Trump administration, as he went through the process of becoming a US citizen.
"They tried to every trick in the book to mess him up, and made him keep coming back to be re-interviewed and re-interviewed. It's ridiculous [because] he's been living in America and paying taxes here since he was in his 20s."
Despite that, she doesn't think Young will be prevented from entering the country.
"They've been detaining people who have green cards or visas – which is hideous and horrifying - but they have not, so far, been refusing to let American citizens back in the country, so I don't think that's going to happen."

The soundtrack released today on streaming platforms, sounds great!
If I was closer I'd definitely attend. But Flag is 90 miles. My dear friend, Mr D, used to get me any boot available ( ie Trunk Show ) has passed on. We met in a Stones chat board were friends 20 yrs.
The movie will be on NYA before too long. We have more screens for it here in Austin, so I’ll see Coastal on Sunday afternoon. Sorry to hear about your friend. It was always great to know the guy who had all the best tapes, old times were good times.
I will be seeing the film in Seattle, looking forward to it! Your Brother Alan in Seattle
They pulled the Coastal soundtrack this afternoon from Apple Music, sadly. Guess it’ll be back tomorrow.
What a Great movie. Kinda like the grown up “Harvest Time”. The bus driver was a trip. Neil is a trip. They are a buddies road trip movie, together!
The Music! OMG. When I hold you in my arms! Prime of Life! I’m The Ocean….hope to see this released & packaged w/ vinyl. Kinda a live” Before & After”.
Caught "Coastal" tonight in Chapel Hill and that it was superb. A couple of front row seats didn't get sold but it was a packed house. This is certainly well worth watching on the big screen and the sound was just right. Honestly, not sure it will have the same impact on the smaller screens, but it sure delivers. The feel of it is that you are maybe sitting at the table behind Neil on the tour bus and just shadow him. Good concept and worked well (imho). Got me thinking of the times I used to interview him in Michigan in those crazy backstage scenes after shows, often with his dad beside me. Just got Amazon and IngramSpark to accept my error free next book today at 4 just before heading to "Coastal." Great day to be alive, for sure!
P.S. Glad now that I got an image of the Silver Eagle bus at Farm Aid in Saratoga with the Farmaidians! I think Thrasher filed it with the last Farm Aid report.
A welcome hour & half, $20 diversion from these times. I believe we will all look back at our childhood as a make-believe, long ago dream. Love Earth!

The film has great performances. Highly recommended. More fun than Mountaintop. When I Hold You In MyArms is a standout. I love I’m The Ocean on 12 string. Me Soul pump organ. Lots of amusing stage fright insight after 4 years of no live shows. The big screen did this film justice. I am not a fan of hand held video but the live footage was mostly from stationary cameras. Many different vantage points & behind the scenes chat. I loved it.

It's too bad that this album is not on the NYA site yet.
So now the Coastal soundtrack album has been taken down off of YouTube, which is a very counterintuitive thing to do on that platform.
“In solidarity with the economic blackout protest the Greedy Hand store will be closed on April 18”? Uh, ok. News to me. & I’m pretty locked into protests these days. I know there was an online economic blackout a few wks ago. Is this now a regular thing? Regional maybe?

It’s a bummer but will be good knowing the rerelease is the proper version when it comes out on NYA. I guess we got a Thursday sneak preview of the soundtrack on the other streaming platforms.
by Aer Stephens:
Waves of Sadness.
I don't know why. From the start. Not constant, but some quite extreme.
I was surprised to see the theater about 2/3's full, here in Burbank. That was nice. A nice geriatric audience, and I was one of them, now, a long time gone from the Tonight's the Night shows, which were my first. When I went to Mountaintop, there were only about 10 in the theater at the Landmark Nuart on Santa Monica in West LA.
The theaters seem to play every movie at deafening sound levels these days, but this was quite subdued, and could have used a boost. It was a lot of concert footage, and it deserved more realistic concert venue volume, at least for the music. I could hear nearby concession wrappers rustling even during the music. (I ran into the 16-plex manager on the way out, and asked about the volume choice, and she said the volume is pre-set by the film distributors for airing, so Shakey Pictures' choice?)
Maybe it was the black and white, too, that contributed to the sadness feeling. But the movie was in the bus, out and directly to soundcheck or the start of the performance at a few venues, some concert segments from the few different venues, then immediately back to the bus, and driving again, and talking with the bus driver. Repeat. The movie seemed just as much conversation with the bus driver as was anything else. Very laid back. Nice Neil dry humor, throughout. And I enjoyed the film, don't get me wrong, but I missed the bits of real joy.
During Mountaintop, with Crazy Horse, there was so much emotion, and much of it anger and frustration, some so intense that I was surprised they were letting us see it. But when it gelled, finally, and that scene of them listening to the play back and Neil lit up with that massive joy and happiness, and a 500 watt smile...... I missed seeing joy like that in Coastal. Neil seemed so isolated from the rest of the world. His special pocket of isolation. On the bus and off the bus. on the bus, off the bus. Looking out the bus window. Escorted every step. Maybe the aging ("I don't recognise myself"), the pace for the solo shows.......
Mostly I was enveloped with sadness for most of the documentary. I don't really know why. I loved the few bits of Micah animation. I would have just as soon seen Coastal at home, with my own control of the sound system for the music parts. Like the last decades' releases, I enjoy them and keep up with a favorite artist that has been a large part of my personal soundtrack since 1970, but don't really know what to make of the sadness that this film bathed me in. Neil already did so much that was so very special to me, and so many. He already did that. I don't mind that the most special songs he will do have already been done. My life was enriched by them as they happened. Now, I love to check in, and see what he is doing, even if it brings me sadness, for whatever reason. Neil playing "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" on the bus might have been my personal favorite part.
That is some bus.
Thanks so much for the review Aer! Not sure why this didn't publish properly? Great to hear from you.
Know what you mean about the sadness and subduedness. The film was definitely for Neil fans. A very intimate exploration of the solo side of Neil. Mainly, rare songs performed live that most are unfamiliar with. Prime of Life, for example. Sub-title could have been "Secrets of a Tour Bus Driver".
The theater was more than half full at the American Film Institute (AFI) Screen #2 and ended with applause. Many stayed afterwards hanging out and chatting about film.
I picked up the soundtrack on Friday on vinyl. No one seemed to have the CD, and it’s sold out at the Greedy Hand store. So I ordered it from a third party through Amazon. Unfortunately the pressing has issues and a fair amount of surface noise. There was a time when everything Neil released on vinyl was of the highest quality. Those days are over now. It seems like the attention to quality has shifted to “just get it out to the market place as quickly as possible”.
Anyway; the performances are absolutely stellar, and his unique take on each song is brilliant. I never thought I’d ever say this, but I can’t wait to hear it on CD. The vinyl version should have been the go to, but unfortunately that’s not the case.
Peace🙏

That album is getting a repress; this LP/CD edition has the “interesting errors” that prompted him to remove it from streaming.
Hello? Sad? No. Not at all. I saw the film for exactly what it was. And it felt exactly as I expected: a first, short, “test” tour, post pandemic. I felt Neil’s hesitancy about the unexpected. I also felt uplifted by some very unique and intimate performances. And the fly on the wall conversations with the bus driver added levity. The theater was less than 1/4 full. Sound volume is ALWAYS an issue @ EVERY concert film I have ever seen in this 16 screen multiplex. Actually this time was not too bad. The last movie (Mountain Top?) there was a very loud release playing next door, (a marvel film, mission impossible or maybe top gun?). But I do remember complaining to tone deaf management. They really didn’t care. It’s kinda sad b/c movie theaters are struggling and even mgmnt. doesn’t care. Like they know days are numbered? The reserved seat I had would not recline. So I moved to the seat on the other side of my wife. Then I figured I better tell someone incase a late arrival had reserved the seat I was now occupying. Not only did mgmnt not seem to care, it also felt like they kinda knew very few tickets were sold. “What movie”? Also so few workers only 1 concession stand was open with REALLY LONG LINE, the trash was overflowing in the mens room. One of the urinals had a plastic bag over it.
The last movie I recall nearly full was “Harvest Time”. Love that bluray. Can’t wait fer “Coastal” bluray. Would be a nice vinyl package, If they can correct the sound issues w/ the soundtrack.
@herbsworld Well, I don't have expectations when I see films, so for me, it can never be as I expect. I let the art have me. I am not meaning to say the film was sad, or making a judgement. I said I enjoyed it, and I did, a lot. I enjoy Neil, the artist. I let the art, this movie, have me, and I expressed how it made me feel, and owned my feelings, even though I don't know why I felt that way. Good art is supposed to create emotions for the viewer, and it certainly did for me. Maybe, as it matures in my memory, I will come to understand.
@Thrasher, as for the publishing mystery, I am trying this post in Firefox. I am still using my older Trashcan Mac Pro. I used Chrome before, and it showed as submitted successfully, in full, on this page that I "published" it on, but I sent it twice when it didn't show up on the actual blog page. Chrome seems to not be handling things with my Mac well these days. If Cloudfare or other captchas are involved, especially, but only with Chrome. We will see if Chrome was the culprit.
@ Dan - bummer on vinyl. Especially given the $s.
@ Aer- thanks on letting us know about comments issues. Bummer as well.
Posted review as TW moment. Love what you're saying here about art and audience. As it should be. Like all great art, everyone can interpret -- as they feel it, in the moment.
peace
This picture clearly resonates more with the long time fan. We buy his music, travel to see him live to hear what he wants to share at this time. Seeing the bus before and after show is always exciting, it's highly unique and we got a peak inside and his view of us coming and going. Most of us have waved while hollering thank you as it leaves the venue. We even have a picture of it while my wife poses next to it hanging in the hall, Neil's and Elliot's autograph tucked in the corner of the frame. Getting to see the pre show routine, his and the crew, we thought was a real highlight. We had a special appreciation for the man behind the wheel, we have a family member who drives tour bus for various artists, it's not all glam, driving after the show in the wee hours while everyone else sleeps, going to crazy cities, it takes a lot if trust and the bond was a joy to observe. Amazing how many people time equipment to put one man on stage for us and again the trust in them to handle his musical treasures. Peace
