New Neil Young Archives TIMELINE CONCERT: Solo Trans Tour, Buffalo - 1983

The latest Neil Young Archives TIMELINE CONCERT OF THE WEEK | NYA is from the Solo Trans Tour at Memorial Auditorium in Buffalo, New York on Feb 17, 1983.

Ticket Stub via Sugar Mountain

Patron Bob does the honors on NYA :

The first Solo/Trans show to sellout (according to Neil on stage).

Also the first show at Buffalo's Memorial auditorium that I attended that sold beer! This might have added to the amazing crowd enthusiasm that night to an acoustic show! Neil was blown away by the crowd & thank the crowd many times throughout the show & said he'd never miss playing Buffalo on any upcoming tours. I think he has held to that promise. This was a very special night for everyone there, including Neil. A nice recording to replace the audience recording most fans have would be nice to hear (If possible). [ed note: it was possible!]

Thanks to all involved with NYA website,

Bob M

A comment from a posting on Neil Young's Handwritten Setlist: 1983 “Solo Trans” Tour, 1st Show by ForeverYounger:

WOW! Thanks fer the burn down memory lane......

My first Neil show. Feb 23, 1983 Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

I can NO longer say I remember it like yesterday, but still, there are memories....

"Scalping" (for $30 ea) a pair of $8 EIGHTH ROW Floor seats, moments before the show was to go on. Don't even know if he had an opener? It was SOOO cold outside, we didn't haggle. went there w/o tickets, weren't planning on spending that much (No $ left fer merch.)

I had the Trans album, Decade album & a copy of "Hawks & Doves" in the cassette deck, along for the ride. Turns out that's all I needed. Very eclectic performer. moved seamlessly from instrument to instrument, singing thru his harmonica rig. until he wasn't. The rig was swapped for what I've come to know as a "Vocoder". On came the New wave Black shades & out came Ol' Black. An "evening with Neil Young, Solo, Acoustic" had morphed into so much more. But only for one or two songs. That persona would later re-appear performing some familiar classics. What a great show. I was hooked, for Life! Have Not missed him since, often on multiple outings, in the Tri-State region. I also began wearing a Beige Corduroy jacket with Dark brown elbow patches b/c of Neil. I was a college student.

In Heaven.

On a semi-related note, NY's youtube channel has just posted a video for Don't Forget Love:

I offer in the interests of remembering to highlight and celebrate the music. This song has truly resonated with me, as I keep trying to engage with good faith and equilibrium around here.

"Don't forget love."

I saw this tour on Super Bowl Sunday in St Louis 1/30/83. It was my first Neil show & I've been hooked ever since. BTW Washington beat Miami

@ TopangaDaze - just a few days apart. have you compared the setlists?

@ M.R. Ian - yes, thanks. we just posted vid @

quite appropriate as we head towards St Valentine's Day 2022.

we're struggling with our planned Neil Young & Romanticism in His Music posting tho.

too many excellent TW comments for us to wrap around. a good problem if ever ...

thanks for all the balanced engagement in these heated times.

@ P&L Doc - curious b/c these days seems like Super Bowl Sunday is a national holiday where nothing is scheduled to conflict. of course back then the game was probably over by the time neil hit the stage. the game seems to start later and later each year.

right, the Redskins beat the Dolphins. Altho they've renamed the team since ...

An interesting addition to this thread appears via Neil’s announcement this morning that they have added tracks to Trans with the result of reinstating the original vinyl experience and moving the alternate versions found on the CD to the end as bonus tracks. The new presentation is sound in the sense of an archival record, but I do find the CD to be the definitive edition to date and would rearrange them in a playlist to reconstitute the CD, possibly flying in “If You Got Love” from Archives Vol 3 once it’s released.

The story he tells about his vision for the Trans video is fascinating and promises a view of an amazing chapter in the Archives blu-ray set. Also, am I reading this correctly? Neil says Trans was the title of the album in its first incarnation, sort of a soundtrack to the movie Geffen wouldn’t back the production of. And the album we got, with the Island songs included, is called Trans -Trans (an album about going from one life to another)? At times Neil Young’s quirky nomenclature can be difficult to distinguish from mere typo!

Since I don't have the membership tier (but I am a NYA member) to request a show I do hope the longest Shocking Pinks show of the tour is next from Lansing, Michigan on the timeline. Caught the Pine Knob show where the Pinks didn't play because they ran out of time and the Lansing Civic Center the next night where they played a really long show. Sat in the same seats, 5th row on the aisle, with brother Bob Young, and dad Scott Young, right behind me in the 6th row each night. There is a whole chapter in "Neil & Me" about those shows. Pretty sure Neil went golfing with Bob between the two shows which were 81 miles apart.
