Replacing "RUST BUCKET" DVDs: Neil Young Owns It and Steps Up
As we covered recently, Neil Young is stepping up on the issue regarding the DVD audio on ‘Way Down in the Rust Bucket’.
As background, a TW reader commented back in February on the audio concerns on the DVD versus the CD, LP or hi-res files. The TW commenter -- Mr. Harm -- then followed up directly with NYA with a Letter to Editor to which Neil Young personally responds.
Here are details on "RUST BUCKET" DVDreplacement discs from a comment on "RUST BUCKET" DVD Audio Issues: Neil Young Owns It and Steps Up - UPDATED by Old Black:
I emailed NYA and pointed out all that I said in my post (at the top of this thread) and they've replied today. Word for word it says:Hello, Thanks for reaching out.
Please send an email to NYDVDReplacements@wmgcustomerservice.com with the following information:
1. Your name and address.
2. Attach a photo of your DVD (or a copy of your receipt).
3. The name of the store where you bought it.
We will return a new DVD to you when the replacement discs arrive. You do not have to return the DVD that you bought.
If you run into any further issues with this process, let us know, and please reach out.
Thank you,
The Archives Team.
You can't say fairer than that can you? A nice example of transparency, decency, and customer service. Thanks NYA
Thanks so much for sharing here Old Black!
Yes, an excellent customer service example regarding transparency and decency.

I sent my request for replacement DVD’s (Rust Bucket & Return to Greendale) last week. Be sure your photos are jpeg so they won’t be too large to Email.
Integrity is rare commodity in the music industry, hats off to Neil for being both transparent and standing behind his work. “Quality whether you want it or not” indeed !
Peace 🙏
Is there an actual audio issue with the Return to Greendale DVD? I haven't seen a confirmation of that.
@ Dan - indeed, Quality whether we want it or not!
@ Darth - check the links and NYA for background. Neil confirms he f'd up and explains why he keeps f'g up, as well.
will there ever be a definitive answer to that oh-so essentially quintessential existential question: Why do I ... ???
I've only seen Neil confirm the audio issue on WDitRB - but I thought I saw statement on NYA that the audio on RtG is not affected? I have requested by replacement for the Rust Bucket DVD already...
@ Darth - ooops, sorry. good point. hmmm.
@ Dan - good point here on Return to Greendale DVD audio. Where did that come up? NYA only mentions Rust Bucket.
Neil mentioned in the letters that he was not happy with the audio for Return to Greendale and wanted to fix it as well as Rust Bucket. My response from NYA that they are assessing my request and I will receive replacement discs when they are available.
Peace 🙏
Neil's reply to Harm's original letter of 20th March that raised this whole subject ends with Neil saying "We are now investigating the Return to Greendale DVD's". Who knows quite that means!
Meant to say "Who knows quite WHAT that means!. Oops...
Perhaps Neil decided to reinstate Poncho as a real person 🤯
Peace 🙏
Ya, that is so weird, especially since it is expensive to do. And then Neil seemed baffled by someone asking if Poncho would be a real person on something or other. Almost as if he didn’t know about the bizarre CGI on RtG DVD.
He later gave a response to another fan complaining about the SQ of the RTG Blu-Ray, stating he was dead wrong in an updated reaction. The RTG Blu-Ray sounds like it's supposed to. I have only heard the mix on the Movietone video, which is lossy and stereo and it sounded fine to my ears. The Blu-Ray also has a 5.1 mix which supposedly is even better. The only issue I see is that is the inbetween song banter.
Completely off topic:
I’ve finally got the time to dive into the Timeline Concerts and just finished the March 9th 2013 ‘A Day on the Green’ from Australia, and was just completely blown away by the second half of the set. From ‘Ramada Inn’ to ‘Roll Another Number (for the road)’ is just EPIC Crazy Horse. The version of F&!#in’ Up is absolutely the coolest version I’ve ever heard. The crowd is totally committed to the whole vibe. I love how Neil “breaks out the time machine” for some young girl with a green dress, before a stunning ‘Cinnamon Girl’. What a treat to have access to all these wonderful shows. And I’m going chronologically so I still have two more shows left, and of course more coming. I’m suffering from a great case of Crazy Horse tinnitus right now. Wow !!!!
Peace 🙏
That “day on the green” set is near perfection
He busted out the time machine down here in Melbourne too - very funny stuff
They were having a lot of fun on that tour
Can’t wait to see what’s next on the time concert list
So Thomas the new concert of the week is up - Boulder 1976!!! This feature is so great.
