We have had a brief life as a species. I am afraid that we generally overrate ourselves, endlessly busy making things of all sorts and not really understanding what we finally make or precisely what we do. Art, poetry, philosophy, the sciences, when they are done correctly, they seek understanding rather than assuming it. United States Culture and the way it consumes continuously forces itself onto the world. Could we be a brief sort of evolutionary burst? The world will certainly continue without us and who really has a grasp on geological time? On the other hand, in our brief time as a species, we have shown resilience of all sorts. But as Heidegger noticed in the 20th century, we are now capable of destroying ourselves with our own acts and devices. We have become smart enough to be self-destructive (and so as Nietzsche said "interesting").
Neil Young has undeniably had a most illustrious career for over fifty years now, with a staggering number of impressive releases. Over the past few months we have been privileged seeing and hearing a large amount of unreleased material on NYA, including today’s showing of My Country Home from the Catalyst performance.
It’s hard to imagine how many of these unreleased gems have been sitting in the archives for so long, as each have been extraordinary in their quality of performance. Today is just another example. The Horse are just galloping along at a comfortable pace, relaxed and and locked into the groove. Their body language shows a group of friends in their element doing what they do best. The first song of a three set performance and all cylinders are pumping. No pressure here. Just doing what comes naturally and enjoying the moment. Even before Neil locks into his first exquisite solo of the night, he pauses to let the Horse shine and gather his thoughts.
If this is any indication of the remainder of what the show has to offer, then we are in for another epic Crazy Horse show. What a exhilarating experience to get a taste of what’s to come this year. Homegrown, Rust Bucket, Young Shakespeare, Return To Greendale, and the LONG awaited Archives Volume Two all on the list for 2020.
Epic is a word I use a lot when writing about Crazy Horse live, and maybe it’s a over used term, but watching the Buffalo show yesterday and now this next performance from the Catalyst, it certainly seems appropriate. Each new release begs for an appropriate word to describe the emotional response it conjures, and until someone can find a better one, I’ll stick with epic. Thank you Neil for finally letting these unique unreleased performances out into the world where they belong. Our lives will be all the better for it.
Peace 🙏
Great Catalyst clip looking forward to the complete show! Better set list than Buffalo and much better haircut!
The Catalyst setlist might have been more of what we would have seen on the following tour, but then the Gulf War broke out and Neil changed his way of thinking. One can only wonder if tunes like Dangerbird, Surfer Joe, and even T-Bone would have been regular plays on the tour.....
Funny comment about Neil's hair on the Weld tour, it may have been the only bad thing about the whole tour, ha ha!
@ Abner & Dan - both of your insightful contributions -- once again demonstrate that Neil Young fans/rusties are some of the most knowledgeable, astute and articulate music fans out there. And we're honored and humbled to have folks like you guys to contribute here to our little TW blog.
@ mshare/RD - yeah checking out now & posting @ http://neilyoungnews.thrasherswheat.org/2020/04/rust-bucket-premiere-now-playing.html
@ Richie - that darn Gulf War?! Messing up setlists. gee whiz. Thank you Mr Bush #1.
But seriously, the ongoing war made for some unbelievable concerts.
It was as many say one of the loudest concerts ever. It the 2nd loudest concert we ever attended and recall our ears ringing for days. And only later realized the damage done. Neil's hearing was damaged as well by WELD.
the #1 loudest concert was RNS back when our ears were so tender and unconditioned. By the time WELD rolled around we had built up considerable immunity and resistance to the CrazyHorse-91 strain.
We can only imagine NYCH-2020 strain's contagion...
so always remember -- wear protection and keep a safe distance.
some things never change, notice that?
Abner, great way to look at things! Nice to read an intelligent opinion. Best is that I read it on neil young's friends site. Thank's

Disney out of magic
Paris is no longer romantic
New York is no longer exciting
The Chinese wall is no longer a fortress
And Mecca is empty
Assuming this is all true than then the beginning is not only near ... the beginning is here.
... and so begins the rest of our lives.

A Wonderfully articulate affirmation of the value of knowing our humble, and only place, we as a species can hope to survive within this world. I hope we have the integrity to pull it off.
"And if the dam breaks open many years too soon
And if there is no room upon the hill
And if your head explodes with dark forebodings too
We'll see you on the BRIGHT side of the moon.
And if the cloud bursts, thunder in your ear
You shout and no one seems to hear.
And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes
We'll see you on the BRIGHT side of the moon."

If people take care of their minds in a way that compliments their body, and ultimately their health, they will survive in commune with nature. Is it just me or has anyone else noticed how obese so many of the covid deaths are? I don't mean to be judgmental, but underlying every person's immune system is their nutritional health. I have been personally mega dosing chicken soup and vegetables throughout this pandemic.I've also seen Neil 3 times live.and I am heartbroken about John Prine. One of the other truly great musicians the boomers were so lucky to grow up with
The music and particularly the lyrics of Neil Young have done and continue to influence and shape my life in my opinion one of the greatest artists there has ever been
Deeply missing John today but I'm sure that he's enjoying his vodka and ginger ale and that nine mile long cigarette
The quotation appreciated by N.Young comes from this site. Please pass on.

distant souls,,collected dust,,candles hold to darkness,,journeys’ cause a fallen will,,the rail has bent the turn,,laughter’s silence slips through the deck,,currents carry on,,mumbling echoes fading swift,,willows hold the tale,,timeless clouds a vast parade collapse beneath their sun,,days to night with night to day,,shadows cry’ we’re here
May I become at all times, both now and forever
A protector for those without protection
A guide for those who have lost their way
A ship for those with oceans to cross
A bridge for those with rivers to cross
A sanctuary for those in danger
A lamp for those without light
A place of refuge for those who lack shelter
And a servant to all in need.
