Last week, we featured a Comment of the Moment on the legendary Neil Young & Crazy Horse gigs at the Old Princeton Landing bar by Joseph.
The posting inspired many memories of the those gigs which seemed to be all in a fevered dream -- full on Neil Young & Crazy Horse "stealth concerts" in a tiny dive bar with barely 150+ squeezing in. Reports were that more folks were outside the bar than inside while the band played.
Here's a look at Old Princeton Landing, Princeton-by-the-Sea, Half Moon Bay, California from July 2019 by Aer "H2OFace".
Thanks so much for sharing Aer "H2OFace"!

So where exactly is Old Princeton Landing, Princeton-by-the-Sea, Half Moon Bay, California?
Also, see definitive Cardboard Analogue, which details the performances of Neil Young and Crazy Horse at the Old Princeton Landing bar near Half Moon Bay in Northern California during March-June 1996. (Thanks Ciaran for keeping the dream alive! Incidentally, we've always found the website name "Cardboard Analogue" very clever. It is a pun on Broken Arrow ranch's "Plywood Analogue" studio. Although, "Cardboard Digital" might be even more clever.)

Interesting thread on these shows. I am listening to my copy of the June 4TH show and reading set lists from the book Ghost On The Road. What series and for me 4TH is one of the best. Worthy of a NYA release if only for opening Broken Arrow set of songs seeing the light of day for the first time. Kevin D. In Morro Bay CA. Just down the road.
The OPL bartender in 2009 presented me with a print of exactly the same photo that you can see above, with Neil wearing that black and green shirt and Billy being hidden behind him. So does anybody know who took that picture?
interesting side note. Mavericks Surf Break very near. a 10 min walk from OPL. 60' faces on waves in winter. They try to have an annual surf contest but bickering over sponsorship and unpredictable weather usually kybosh the thing. Sill many great videos are out there.
Hi Thrasher! I have been thinking about this for a while; You know how life is fragile and that we should not wait before we say to the one we care bout that we love them , so why not write a long open lettre to tell Neil to tell him how much we care . Start it and we will follow .Peace...
Akiv, Thank you so much for posting that link.
What is the search you did on archive.org to find that show? Are there other OPL shows on archive.org? Thanks!
@ akiv1971 - thanks for the link!
also, rust radio streams OPls from time to time.
@ Kevin - cool. Ghosts On The Road is essential. the printed pre-cursor of Sugar Mtn.
@ Dionys - not sure about picture. btw, updated the post w/ the G-dale brochure.
Still need to lod more pages. now motivated to do so b4 premiere.
@ wsanjose01 - some cold water for surfing. do you surf?
@ Chris - thanks. nice idea. actually, evryday here @ TW is sort of a thank you note. we'll give soe more thought.
maybe after we get Dionys' G-dale brochure uploaded?
in the menatime, can't really improve on this ;
"One of these days,
I'm gonna sit down and write a long letter
To all the good friends I've known
And I'm gonna try
And thank them all for the good times together.
Though so apart we've grown.
One of these days,
I'm gonna sit down and write a long letter
To all the good friends I've known
One of these days, one of these days, one of these days,
And it won't be long, it won't be long.
And I'm gonna thank,
That old country fiddler
And all those rough boys
Who play that rock 'n' roll
I never tried to burn any bridges
Though I know I let some good things go.
One of these days,
I'm gonna sit down and write a long letter
To all the good friends I've known
One of these days, one of these days, one of these days,
And it won't be long, it won't be long.
From down in L.A.
All the way to Nashville,
From New York City
To my Canadian prairie home
My friends are scattered
Like leaves from an old maple.
Some are weak, some are strong.
One of these days,
I'm gonna sit down and write a long letter
To all the good friends I've known
One of these days, one of these days, one of these days,
And it won't be long, it won't be long.
One of these days, one of these days, one of these days,
And it won't be long, it won't be long."
One of these days...
peace
Dear Thrasher,
I was at OPL 4/23/96 & 5/13/96 inside and 4 other shows in deli, same building, watching through a window in a thin door between the two parts of the building. The shows were epic, indeed! I have the live tapes and they are astounding! I will donate shortly!
Thank you!

so cool you made a bunch of OPLs. We were pretty close to making a flight but just couldn't swing the logistics at the time. it turned out to be a good move in after thought b/c by the time we were ready to book flights and go for it, the stealth gigs stopped. sure wee would've had good time anyway, but ...
no worries on donation. thanks though.
your words of support are worth more than silver & gold.
the thrashers are fine. we have sufficient rainy day funds to keep going for sometime. as you know, we've been ready for #BigShift for awhile now. and fortunately, so many were also prepared as well and not caught off guard like poor Madonna, Lady Gaga and others.
even with surging traffic @ TW and increasing bandwidth fees we should be good. if this goes on for a sustained period where we see record high traffic continuing to build as Neil finally goes viral, we may need to do a fundraiser.
otherwise.we'll just wait until our annual fundraiser around Thanksgiving.
but always appreciate the support for TW.
So pass the boot and be sure to tip your waiters and waitresses, as always.

Jay Moriarity wipe out, Mavericks. Still hard to watch. Only the best of the big wave chargers surf here. No I don't surf. I tried once in Santa Cruz in the mid 80s all I got was a bunch of lip from the youngsters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uReDn0gI30I Not a welcoming subculture to put it politely
I loved those cassette tapes that emerged from that epic run of shows, helped on a tree on the old Rust list, and subsequently played them to death. The spontaneity of the location, the dates and the songs themselves will always have a special place in the Neil canon for me. While I wasn't there, there were so many great accounts by those who were that made it more real.
I finally made it to OPL in 2010 and had a beer at the bar. There were no t -shirts or anything like that available to commemorate the visit but a good Rustie friend later brought me an OPL surf wax that holds an honored place in my cd shelf!
