Two interesting details about this song :
1) it was the opening song of the show when I saw Neil & Horse for the first time in 1976,
2) during the Greendale solo tour in 2003, he opened the second part of all his shows with "Lotta Love". But in Antwerp Neil was informed that there were two open seats left in the audience because one of the people who bought a ticket passed away. Then he changed his standard setlist and opened the second set with "Tell me why". He mentioned that the song was dedicated to "someone who bought a ticket but couldn't come". The next show after Antwerp he started again his second set with "Lotta Love".

Albert - that's pretty cool. Thanks for sharing. Kind of sad, but nice to know Neil was making a gesture to his fans.
We must admit that it's these kinds of stories which find most rewarding to share here on TW.
Kind of like what we mentioned the other day regarding 3 Harvest Moon concert stories:
- Steve and Danielle in Brisbane, Australia
- Liza in Germany
- Gavin in Dublin, Ireland
So if anyone is able to fill in blanks on the 2003 tour in Antwerp, please let us know!
At the very end of the show in Antwerp he also played "Long May You Run", and he commented : "For the same guy who couldn't come". But Neil knew that the person passed away (that was written on a small message handed over to him at the start of the break), but the audience did not know and started giggling. Sad coincidence ....

Very touching story. If I died before a Neil show my hope would e for someone to pass along that message.
Thrasher? I thought I heard the Tell Me Why story here back in 2003 ? Do you recal? I think you might be able to find the original post.
@ Syscrusher - likewise.
we did hunt around a bit for the "Tell Me Why" story but didn't really find anything.
But wee did find an interview titled "Tell Me Why" @

Makes for an interesting time capsule. Especially when we wrote about "Funny how some things never really change..."
That was 2012. It's just deja vu, as time loops on & on into infinity.
now we know. why bother with asking "Tell Me Why"?
same as it ever was...
For quite some time now, I have had an idea about a violin / fiddle.. being played searchinly..eeirly.. an octave higher, slightly before and during the guitar solo /cadenza of "Tell Me Why". The idea came to me as I was learning of the bullying and suicide of Tyler Clementi. I didn't know he played the violin. But I could just hear it in the song. It's as strange as the fact I was thinking of "Tell Me Why" this morning, and stumbled onto this.
"Tell Me Why" -First song on Neil's playlist for Farm Aid 2018
Last words spoken on "Ohio", also in that set.
