Tom Petty: 1950 - 2017

"My Back Pages"
Bob Dylan and Tom Petty & Neil Young

Tom Petty has passed away at the age of 66.

Neil Young tweeted a heartfelt tributes to Tom Petty: "You have been such a great force, a tremendous contribution to music and the feelings people will hold in their hearts forever when the hear you everywhere."

Tom Petty and Neil Young performed "My Back Pages" with Bob Dylan and many others at "BobFest" -- Bob Dylan's 30th Anniversary tribute -- at Madison Square Garden, New York City - 1992.

Made some damn fine records especially in the last 10 years - just produced Chris Hillman's record. Into The Great Wide Open - this with Walter Becker some of the seminal musicians of my life gone.

Some days are diamonds
Some days are rocks
Some doors are open
Some roads are blocked

Sundowns are golden
Then fade away
But if I never do nothing
I'll get you back some day, 'cause

You got a heart so big
It could crush this town
And I can't hold out forever
Even walls fall down

All around your island
There's a barricade
That keeps out the danger
That holds in the pain

Sometimes you're happy
Sometimes you cry
Half of me is ocean
Half of me is sky, but

Some things are over
Some things go on
Part of me you carry
Part of me is gone, but

The news of Tom Petty leaving us last night struck my heart like a dagger. My wife and I have followed him from the beginning and always considered him not only a brilliant artist, but a brilliant man. His music has truly been part of us.

Our hearts and prayers go out to his wife and children on the sudden loss of this wonderful soul. A soul who came here who lived a life that has moved, inspired, and entertained generations.

Much like the loss of David Bowie, Lou Reed, John Lennon, Frank Zappa, and too many others to list here.... the world just doesn't feel the same without Tom Petty. Rest in peace my old friend.

I like would like to believe you and George are playing ukulele's together as I write this singing your favorite tunes with Roy Orbison at your side.

Ever since I first heard his music, I could always hear a little Neil in Tom Petty's songs. Tunes like "You Wreck Me", "You Got Lucky", and "You Don't Know How It Feels" felt like Crazy Horse songs, maybe just not as crunchy.

I also loved him playing Lucky on the fabulous King Of The Hill cartoon. Very funny role.

Tom Petty will surely be missed. A heartfelt RIP.

you should post the full 1994 bridge school benefit video from youtube. it's brilliant. the last performance with original drummer stan lynch. he's playing songs off "wildflowers" that no one has yet heard. and he plays "girl on lsd" to the crowd's delight. during "learning to fly" you can tell tom is having a real moment on that stage with the kids behind him. he puts everything he's got into that song, and it's amazing. go watch it now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXWrt1ctASs&t=53s

tom petty was an American national treasure. he's right up there with neil as far as i'm concerned, and the argument could be made that he wrote better songs.

I had to do a double take when I saw what you had written about tom petty opening for neil in 2003 in aspen. I was there...how do I not remember that? well, turns out it's because you're wrong (fake news!). tom petty headlined the night before, with bo diddley opening for him. now why the hell didn't I go see THAT??

Tom was great, but Neil Young is GREAT. I've never been touched deep in my soul by Tom's often radio-friendly music. Sorry, Neil is an artist for the ages and Tom Petty was an artist for our time.

This moment on this planet right now has been filled with violent madness, personal loss, devastating natural disasters that have changed thousands of lives, and a polarized world bent on self destruction. Perhaps I am alone on this, but a moment of quiet reflection is more important than debate at this particular time.

Thrashers.... You talk of the coming "Big Shift". We've been in it for some time now. Sometimes it's hard to see things when you're in it, and we are already in it. Too many distractions keeping us all busy while the world quietly goes insane.

Talk is cheap.... If you want the world to change.... BE that change.... you can only change you.

Peace to you all with hearts that can still feel.

@ Andy - lyrics for our times. thanks.

@ joe m. - updated post with Bridge set. a clean official video is always nice and makes a lovely tribute to Tom and the HB's.

apolgies on the fake news. When the review said tom opened festival, we didn't realize it was a multi-day affair. corrected. thanks for keeping us straight.

@ Dan - good words. but action matters. the shift rolls on ... "We're The Ones We've Been Waiting For" ...

@ Thrashers... you’re absolutely right “action matters “. Which was my point. I took the action to become the person I was waiting for.

I think I saw Tom in 94 at Shoreline. If the Jayhawks opened in was that show. I also saw his 2 of his 3 BSB performances also 94 and 2000. 2000 BSB could arguably be the finest lineup Bridge School the concert ever did. Only last week was I playing his solo set on DVD from the first BSB 1986. A stellar performance! To get up in front of a full shoreline house, alone, and blow everyone away, gutsy man. Missing his already. When you live in San Jose and are a NY fan you see allot of BSB. Im now in Spokane Valley

except the 1st BSB wasn't held at Shoreline....
