1971 Film of Neil Young Recording "A Man Needs A Maid" with the London Symphony Orchestra.
Here is some rare film footage of Neil Young in 1971 recording the album Harvest with the London Symphony Orchestra.
In this clip, Neil Young rehearses "A Man Needs A Maid" on piano while Producer Jack Nitzche records the session. An edited version of this clip appears in the Archives Volume #1 is our best recollection.
Or maybe this is a transfer from The Archives? This clip is 11:26 and we need to go check our Blu-Ray to compare lengths.
Here's what Neil Young wrote in the Decade liner notes about "A Man Needs A Maid":
"I recorded this with the London Symphony Orchestra. Some people thought this arrangement was overdone but Bob Dylan told me it was one of his favorites. I listened closer to Bob. Robin Hood loved a maid long before women's liberation."For more on "A Man Needs A Maid", see Who did Neil write the song "A Man Needs A Maid" about? and Why Does A Man Need A Maid?

What's So Funny About

This song was performed on the 2014 solo tour.
There was a keyboard on top of the piano.
Neil did his part on the piano, then stood to do the orchestra part on the keyboard.
Talk about a one man band.
The audience got a kick out of it.
After the song finished, and while getting ready for the next, he said "That's kind of funny".
What a Star
Great footage, great take, great song
Thank you. Loved it!
