I've been very critical of The Monsanto Years but last night in context of FarmAid the opening songs from that album were extra ordinary. TPoTR is truly the 'New" Crazy Horse and the new song was startlingly good . But my favorite was Western Hero rarely played but my favorite track from SWA's. NY is still an incredible live act(people his age they aren't doing what he does they go somewhere)

Tim - this is probably the most wonderful & gratifying comment you've ever posted here @ TW. Thanks. Patience is a virtue.

WDamn, I've seen Neil 10 or 12 times, including Bethel Woods in July, but I'd love to see Alabama performed live! I'm being greedy but I hope Neil comes back to NY with POTR.

Sugar Mountain says that Alabama hasn't been played live since 1973. What a smoking live version. Love and only love has become a signature potr song. Wow.

Wow is right.

Love "i Won't Quit"

God bless these guys for their passion and conviction

@christopher - good catch.

It should also be noted that shortly after the band Lynyrd Skynyrd was involved in a fatal plane accident, Neil Young performed a rare live version of "Alabama" at Bicentennial Park, Miami, Florida on 11-12-1977 for Children's Hospital Charity with The Gone With The Wind Orchestra and he changed the lyric chorus from "Alabama" to "Sweet Home Alabama".

I watched this last night on a big screen and it only reinforces my belief, Oakland in 74 I made the right choice. He got me then and now 31 years later we're both rocking as hard as we can. Very cool

Neil has grown into the Monsanto Years material and he is KILLING IT, LIVE. I don't put the Doubters in the same camp as the Deniers… (Climate Deniers, that is!)… but ye so full of doubt and criticism of the Godfather of Grunge, saying, "No good albums" shortly after P.P. came out. I hafta call you on it: What a bunch of crap! This is the same guy he's always been. He has grown into a direct spoken protest leader, like it or not. Our hero is still doing it, just like in 1989 with Freedom, except straight to the point, talking truth. Just like Ohio, for Kent State. Just like Living With War. I love it all. Fork in the Road grew on me over time more, but I have Ears. From the start I loved Light a Candle, Johnny Magic, Fuel Line; the 1st, a positive look ahead in dark times, the latter two, flat out Barn Burners, rocking songs that kick Eco ass, resultant of the latest hook-up with the Muse. Ye who couldn't hear the Rock and Roll in that, I am sorry for you. But this album, FitR, was chock full of Prophetic truth. Here is the Artist, banging his heart against some mad Burghie's Wall (Monsanto, US Corporate Capitalism Post Citizens United. Old Black channels the fury of this Man, the Jet Engine in a Hurricane. Its better to burn out than to fade away. Neil Young Burns On! with Fiery Intensity which forces me to Capitalize certain words for Emphasis. Thank you Neil Young & Promise of the Real. By the way, check out the fantastic album "Wasted" from Promise of the Real. It is SO worth it. Lukas has his father's vocal gift but he Rocks way harder. I love Willie. I also now see that the gift is there in Lukas. His brother, Micah (spelling?) is more low key. I can't wait for Seattle, October 4th, front and center. -Alan

*****correction, before someone skewers me. The sentence about Freedom should read: "Just like 1989 with Freedom….blah blah, except straight to the point……. for the DURATION of the album. Nothing against the wonderful songs on Freedom. Overall, Freedom is a stronger album, right? Or is it? If strong means Bold and straight to the point, Monsanto Years might even win the contest. That is a tough task to take on, the album which brought us (2 versions!) RitFW. Peace. Alan in Seattle

I'd have to agree with Alan on this one but I called it from the start. I referred to POTR as Crazy Horse Jr. before anyone else. Go back and check it Thrasher. You know it's true! Promise of the Unreal! The songs they're pulling out live are amazing. Another leg please?!

I wonder why Neil decided to not do 'Western Hero' in its original key....which I believe is B flat......seems it would have worked much better......but regardless Western Hero is far & away my favorite tune on SWA......I can recall hitting the repeat button countless times to simply marvel at what Briggs captured in the studio.....lyrically & musically it is a brilliant gem of songwriting combined with performance.....

This is totally off topic but in Southern Illinois a farmer stumbled onto 3 pot plants & the Monroe County police haven't been able to find the grower. Here is a short worthwhile read from a local newspaper. Hopefully it will make you smile. If it doesn't I apologize.

A wonderful opportunity to see POTR rocking and steaming, in a wonderful sound & image quality. With all the excitement on this blog, we in outback Europe became curious... Big Box is fabulous, Alabama is really superb, Love and Only Love steamrolls on to infinity. At times this band is really better, or at least more exciting than the latter day Crazy Horse, but perhaps we should not compare. There are many flaws here with POTR. They quite fucked up Western Hero. The harmonies are way worse than Crazy Horse's. Lucas Nelson's guitar has at times a nasty acid tone. You see and hear him struggling through his parts -- if sometimes successfully. Micah brings in playfulness and madness -- always good on NY. But who really makes the difference is Corey McCormick. I guess I commented before on NY and his bass players, and how Billy Talbot had become the kind of sludge that made the CH sound too uniform and heavy. Now Corey has a wonderfully pointed but smooth style that gives NY's music this bouncy quality, the sharpness that supplements the heavy undertow of his guitar playing. Look at his bass playing style, really in the groove. My two cents. Thanks Thrasher for all your work; it's appreciated.

@ Peacelover Doc - good to know it doesn't take much!

@ Chris M. - 1974 seems to have been a benchmark year for folks getting on the bus. That was our year as well and it has been a long, strange trip of a ride. We've made a lot of friends and met some innarestin' folks along the road.

ps - check your math! 41 years!

@ Alan - as always, love the passion. don't ever lose it.

@ Old Neg - POTR = Crazy Horse Jr. yeah, it seems about right as a concept but just not comfortable with the label. We kind of like referring to POTR as the REAL Deal.

@ Jonathan - good observation and no idea. But terrific imagery in WH. And great that he's pulling out the deep cuts.

@Peacelover Doc - smiled

@ Minke - nice observations on Corey. Everyone was kind of wondering whether POTR would just be a one off event? Assuming they carry on for awhile, let's just see how this matures along. From what we've seen, this looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship. :)
