The show last night at Kuçukçiftlik Park was great. (Note: I was drinking Tuborg throughout -- thankfully the park still has its booze license, and remains one of the few places in Turkey to see a big concert and have a beer at the same time -- and I didn’t write anything down, so take what follows accordingly.) Neil and the Horse played one long set of roughly the same tunes they've been playing in Europe in recent weeks: they opened with an extended jam of "Love and Only Love." They also played "Goin’ Home," "Only Love Can Break Your Heart," "Powderfinger," and "Days that Used to Be." They played one encore tune, the new "Who’s Gonna Stand Up and Save the Earth?"
The highlights were "Rockin' in the Free World," a Crazy Horse version of "After the Gold Rush," which was a surprise, and "Down by the River." Neil did two acoustic songs in the middle of the set: "Blowin’ in the Wind," which felt and a bit out of place (“Girl from the North Country” would have been the more expected Dylan cover, but maybe Neil didn’t want to do it without Jack White’s sound-o-rama booth) and "Heart of Gold."
I can add that during "Goin' Home" and again during "Rockin in the Free World," (at least I’m pretty sure it was during these songs) Neil made reference to the Gezi Park protests of last spring / summer, by singing, "Hey, standing man, do what you're told!" I don't think that many people in the audience understood the reference -- not because of the language barrier or anything, but because it came sandwiched between lines in the chorus and also because the “standing man” thing was a relatively brief sideshow of Gezi – but kudos to Neil for making the effort to acknowledge the protests. Also, there were intermittent rain showers throughout the show, and at one point Neil quipped, "free water!"
I was keeping my hopes up that Neil would pull out "Mideast Vacation" in light of this being his first time in Istanbul, but no such luck. Also, the name of the concert venue was badly misspelled on the merchandise, which was limited -- mostly “Harvest” and “Live Rust” album shirts with no dates of the European tours on the back, although some did have dates and venues.
Overall a great show, and it was wonderful to see Neil and Crazy Horse (with Rick Rosas filling in for Billy Talbot – get well soon Billy!) in Istanbul. The guys are still rocking, and we'll look forward to seeing them back in a few years...inshallah!!
