Helsinki, Finland Concert Tonight Kicks Off Neil Young 2008 Summer Tour Leg #2

New song debut!

"Just Singing A Song Won't Change The World" [mp3]

Thanks Johnny TheSongDog Yuma!

Lyrics transcribed by Liza from Germany.

Just Singing A Song Won't Change The World

You can play my guitar
See it where it'll go
Send this song to a distant star
While the rhythm explodes
Just singing a song won't change the world

You can drive my car
Feel how it rolls
Feel a new energy
As it quietly rolls
Just singing a song won't change the world

Just singing a song won't change the world
Just singing a song won't change the world

You could sing about change
Well, you're making your own
You could be what a child says ??
On a big wheel rose??
Just singing a song won't change the world

You could play my guitar
Go where it goes
Send this song to a distant star
While the rhythm explodes
Just singing the song won't change the world

Note that lyrics in 3rd verse are incomplete. Corrections welcome!

Thanks Liza!

What a great show and great setlist again from Neil.

I saw him this year at Roskilde festival too, and I was hoping a different setlist from that. And that is what i got.. Everybody knows, NEW SONG, Cortez, Helpless, Unknown Legend...

After I've been waiting for you I heard Neil saying on the stage something like "Let's play the new song" or something, off the mic but still I heard something like that through the amplifiers.

The new song was really a highlight (not musically I must say, they hadn't clearly played it alot since I noticed some mistakes in it) but it was great to hear something that I knew nobody had heard never before!!

This was fourth time I have seen Neil live, and I have never before heard Cortez live, and I was really hoping for that. I went crazy when it begun, but I must say that it wasnt the best version I've ever heard, there were something wrong with the sound or something. Other instruments were too low, and it wasnt the longest version either. But it was still GREAT!!!

Highlight for me was a BRILLIANT version of Words. It was even better than at Roskilde festival.

After the gig the audience were still waiting Neil to get back to the stage, maybe to play some rockin' finishing song, like Hey hey, My my, Rockin in the free world or something. I really enjoyed the 20minutes version of No Hidden Path but it could have been a little turn-down for some people.

But it was a great night once again!

Thanks Neil!

Possible song titles:

“Is Change Coming?”
“Not Anymore”
"Singing A Song"
and yes....
"Old Song"
That last one really rocks... BecauseSoundMatters

Wow! Helplessly hoping to hear Cortez and Helpless again. Did he play Helpless solo acoustic or with the band or what?

At 8/08/2008 07:32:00 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Helpless was performed same way as old man, unknown legend and heart of gold; with the band, and Neil on acoustic guitar / harp.

That really was a great surprise!

With the new song it seems as if Neil is just trying anything to leave his name in the spotlight before his time is up. Stop being controversial and write quality songs. This is no where near the quality of No Hidden Path.

Thanks so much for the audio of the new song. I really like the melody and I just tried to write down the lyrics, but in the third verse I'm very unsure. Maybe someone could help??
Here is what I wrote down:

Just Singing A Song Won't Change The World

You can play my guitar
See it where it'll go
Send this song to a distant star
While the rhythm explodes
Just singing a song won't change the world

You can drive my car
Feel how it rolls
Feel a new energy
As it quietly rolls
Just singing a song won't change the world

Just singing a song won't change the world
Just singing a song won't change the world

You could sing about change
Well, you're making your own
You could be what a child says ??
On a big wheel rose??
Just singing a song won't change the world

You could play my guitar
Go where it goes
Send this song to a distant star
While the rhythm explodes
Just singing the song won't change the world

Thanks for the mp3! Really like the new song! I thought he was just joking on Charlie Rose when he said he was writing this haha. Guess he wasn't kidding.

The new song is not bad. A bit rough in places, but it has promise. I can see it now, in a couple of days an announcement will be made: 'Neil Young has decided to delay the release of The Archives because he wants to put a new album out'. And while I like new albums it's time to unroll the Archives. The wait's been too long.
