Mojo/Q Classic Special All Neil Young Issue
It's been a couple of weeks since receiving the Mojo/Q Classic Special All Neil Young Issue. And what a treat!
Titled as "NEIL YOUNG: THE AMAZING JOURNEY - From Folk Hero to Rocker From Hell!", the 140+ page issue is a joint effort between Q and Mojo magazine. Lots of innaresting stuff.
It looks like Joel Bernstein cooperated with the effort as evidenced by the quantity of photos, including some that have not been published before. This was the first time that Thrasher has seen a picture of Neil's first wife Susan Acevedo.
While we've read much of this before, this is really the most complete and comprehensive - yet concise - look at Neil's career, outside of Jimmy McDonough's Neil Young biography "Shakey".
While the cover hype's in tabloid-style fashion screaming headlines like "Cocaine, Chicks, & Chaos" and "Crazy Tales", the contents are actually well researched and edited. So credit to the good folks at Mojo/Q.
A few items of interest include:
- every Neil Young album reviewed;
- a profile of Neil's manager Elliot Roberts;
- The Stills-Young "Eat A Peach" saga;
- a profile of Neil's producer the late David Briggs; and
- memories of Neil in Canada by Randy Bachman.
With very minimal advertising, the issue is labeled as the "ultimate collectors edition". And it lives up to the billing. Nice job Mojo/Q!

The great "Thrasher" has never seen the inside cover of After the Gold Rush?
What is this, the National Enquirer?
gooey.
I know she sewed the jeans patches on the back cover.
Actually, I believe there is a picture of Susan on the inside cover of "After the Gold Rush".
In the autobiography he tells that Susan used her own hair as thread to sew those patches on. The jeans were in his clothes collection. One day he came home to find that Carrie Snodgrass had ripped the patches off to use them on something else. He was not happy about that.
I was at Neil Young's house in the Fernwood section of Topanga Canyon the day Marakesh Express first played on the radio. I was inly 17. He ame home and caught me playing one of his many guitars. I freaked, but he said they were made to be played. Just don't mess them up. Very cool guy at our first meeting. I later went on to play most of is songs in a band 1000's of times. It was Susan's (his wife in 1968/1969) daughter's (Think her name was Tia) 8th birthday and we had cake. I think Stills came over for the party since Tia liked him and he always cracked her up. We all gathered around a small AM radio on the kitchen counter. The song was to be played at a few minutes after 8 PM (sat or Sun). We listened quite critically, ate cake and cheered. Nice weekend.
Wow dude, that is EPIC! Truly classic moment as I read his bio... I met him once almost 20 years ago, but nothing like that!! Really your time with him is such a unique yet familiar example of that era and his life then. Just freakin wow. -Glotz
