Did anyone predict Ambulance Blues?? Please keep it in for Hyde Park, plus a surprise Thrasher maybe? Greedy hand I know…
This concert was vintage Neil. The contrast to Glastonbury could not have been starker. Its was so HOT (31c/88f) and the sun was beating down on our heads and backs until a few songs into the set. I was concerned Neil was going to be playing directly into the burning sun (though Van handled it admirably) and perhaps the set would be shortened. However, from the moment he walked out and said “I haven’t played this song in 100 years” it was pure, pure joy. The electric Ambulance Blues opener had me in tears. I’d not seen it since he played it in the solo section on final night of the Hammersmith run in 2008. This time with band. Magical. The band was on fire and Neil was in a very good mood. Always a slight grin showing, gesturing here and there, playing into the setting sun, feeding off the brilliant crowd. They nailed each and every song in a tight setlist. Neil is a force of nature and to the deliver like this in Groningen, a special, special place I lived 26 years ago, was dreamy. Long may you run!
The Ambulance Blues video is up on YouTube. Just a tremendous version. The arrangement with the Chrome Hearts is beautiful. Bravo.
Neil just posted on NYA that his cook Ron has tested positive for Covid, lets hope this doesn't spread any further, otherwise I fear for some cancelled shows.
I was wondering why the stage crew were wearing face masks at the Brussels concert. Now we know.
These performances, and I’m talking each individual song, are pure gifts now.
