Just preordered Archive III from the Greedy Hand. 17 CD / 5 BluRay for $476.98 ( this includes tax ), which comes out to $21.68 per disc. It’s limited to 5,000 units and goes on sale tomorrow. So I got the chance to buy it a day early. I assume anyone who is a subscriber will receive the same email I just got. Looks amazing, but definitely not cheap. Release date is September 5th 2024.

Peace🙏

Is this the only way that Archives III will be available?

@John : I doubt it. This set is limited to 5,000 copies and I think everyone remembers how that turned out. I’m guessing there will be a stand alone CD set. But I’m just guessing. There may also be a stand alone BluRay set as well. But I’m sure they’re aware that Neil has way more than 5,000 fans. Time will tell.

Peace 🙏

Dan, not only subscribers. I'm a lapsed subscriber but have purchased from the greedy hand previously and have had the email. Despite saying "never again" after the last fiasco with archives vol 2 I've placed an order.....it looks astonishing doesn't it!

@Old Black : Yes; it looks amazing. Looking forward to the journey through this monster.

Just bagged my monster. Phew! The other two have been waiting patiently for their companion and I just happened to check my email before going to bed. For those of you outside of the USA, the link was not working for me until I used a VPN with a US address. I guess I'm going to get hit hard on the import taxes to Spain, but Neil and team haven't really left us overseas fans a lot of choice on this . . .

I am absolutely staggered that paying subscribers haven't been given an exclusive window. At the bottom of the email it says: "You are receiving this email because you are a valued customer or subscribed to marketing messages in the past."

Subscriber for marketing and get early access to NYA III! Pay to support NYA and ....? It's all Warner's fault, again, but why did they not learn from the NYA II debacle? I guess the price and a fair bit of previously released material (the Landing on Water mixes are archive material...really?) may mean this does not sell out immediately, but we should not have to go through this again.

I’m here for the vinyl sampler, for sure. Two LPs of almost entirely unreleased material! Not sure about the set though. Most if not all of this stuff will be on NYA for subscribers in a higher-than-CD quality. This box is almost all CDs. It’s hard to justify the expense just to dumb down the resolution. I bought the Vol II CD set for $80 and I think I listened to those once, having taken all the tracks and made custom playlists, added outtakes, for endless “spins”. What happened to doing the whole thing on BluRay, or DVD? I loved those full discs of cool playback videos for each song, never seen anything like it. There’s no point putting on a CD when you can even get lossless spreading from Apple Music with the regular subscription. Anyway, I’m super hyped about the music and the movies that will be heading our way in a few weeks, and the NYCH single that will land at midnight.

The Greedy Hand link took me to Warner's Bros. Canada site:

https://store.warnermusic.ca/products/archives-vol-iii-1976-198717-cd-5-blu-ray-deluxe-edition-1?ref=direct&eml=2024July25%2F6530258%2F6010961&etsubid=187823981

If you order, use the discount code Welcome10 and you will get 10% off the order before S+H and taxes.

I'm all in... recalling the scorn from V2 days, I also decided not to wait. The price offset was what I had spent more or less for my VIP tickets to the London, Ontario show that was cancelled. Thankfully I am getting a refund for that one, unlike my Louisville, KY tix purchase for Bourbon & Beyond Festival. I was hoping he would tackle it solo since it was so close to Farm Aid but alas, they recently subbed-in Sting instead as the headliner that night... sigh !

3rd time now I've had my Neil tix cancelled out from under me. Still blessed for all the vast majority of the rest that did go as scheduled, and hoping for as many more as possible.

I didn’t purchase vol 2 specifically b/c it was a cd only release. So I cherry picked the hi res & purchased a few vinyls. Most from Amazon. b/c Greedy Hand Store sold out & did not replenish vinyl stock. That makes no sense to me. If Vol 3 was ALL bluray, I may have considered this a fair price. Too many “previously released” fer me. The vinyl double LP & cherry picking the “un-released” hi res seems like a better plan. We don’t even have cd players in our vehicles OR cd drives in our desktops (home OR work). I do have a home audio cd player, but that’s for OTHER MUSICIANS.
This makes as much sense as the included mp3 d/l card in vol1
Surprised no 22 8track or cassette option.

I decided to Bite the Bullet and pre-ordered mine. Agree with others that the CD format is less than ideal, but I do still listen to CDs and they come out better than streaming through my laptop or phone. No book this time? That's a shame.

If you put aside 44 cents every day since Volume II came out, you'd have saved enough to afford this. (Volume II entailed putting aside 6 cents a day, but that was a longer wait.)

Anyway, that's how I'm justifying this for me.

I ordered from the UK. Annoyed that the Free Takes CD and NYA pin are only for USA / Canada pre-orders, I mean how hard would it be to put them in the box? The lack of a dedicated pre-sale for NYA subscribers is a joke (I am a patron). I play CD's all the time so that doesn't bother me, plus there is the *free* HiRes download so I can listen via my HiRes Walkman. The book looks cool and glad they have stuck with the same format for the box. 11 films, wow this will take me months to get through. Big bucks but will be worth it.

This is tremendously exciting to me. The few criticisms/hesitations I've read in this thread so far seem valid and measured but I can only speak to my own reaction. I discovered this was up for pre-order only because of the dreaded and disheartening "algorithm"... opened up Youtube and the trailer was the first thing offered to me. Couldn't even finish watching the trailer without pausing to purchase this. All reservation and patience went right out the window looking at when the video was posted and worrying (irrationally) that it might already be sold out. It's a thrill just to know I've purchased this and I'm more or less guaranteed the joy for owning this and diving into the music, movies, artwork... everything.

Even with previously released material, even already having NY lay out what we'd expect from this set, it was thrilling to see it as a reality. Part of being a NY fan is appreciating or respecting his mercurial nature, his ability to change course at any time... so to see this being released when he expected and with a lot of the stuff he said would be on it... to have it be a reality... I'm buzzing with excitement.

With some of his recent releases, I've gone back to the DVD's just as frequently (and sometimes even more frequently) than the LP's so I am beyond stoked to have so many films to look forward to with this release. It's been said before (and better) by others, but thinking about having these volumes lined up is an immense documentation of a diverse and prolific career that's virtually unrivaled in rock. We are extremely lucky! Yes, it's commerce, and it's produced because the numbers have been crunched and profit can be made and we are engaging in a transaction. But even having access to this deep of a well feels like such a gift. I've fantasized about being alive for his '70's run and the thrill of seeing him in his youth, knocking out one unimpeachable classic after another. But I'm also lucky to be alive now, where it feels like we barely have to go a season without another exciting archive release, new release, tour, book, or whatever else NY has up his sleeve. Hell, I feel like I'm still finding surprises and discoveries both small and large in Toast, Noise and Flowers, World Record, and everything else. I'm still reveling in the magic and beauty experienced attending the coastal tour last year while also still reeling from the inspiration and joy I got from the kick off of the Love Earth tour.

A practical observation/tip to wrap this up: Thank you to the commentator who shared the 10% discount code for buying this from the WB store... though, and I'm sure this will vary depending on location, the WB store wanted to charge me I think $62 to ship to California. I personally went with the Greedy Hand store because even with taxes, the free shipping made it cheaper than buying through WB with discount. I'm sure this isn't true across the board but if you are looking for the cheapest option, it might be worth it to check both sites before committing. But it's a negligible price difference, ultimately, once I factor in how truly stoked I am for this set.

Can't wait to keep an eye on everyone's thoughts - good and bad - leading up to, and after, release!

It is a lot of money, and there are a lot of people struggling just to feed their families and heat their homes at the moment, and anybody who has ordered it, myself included, should count themselves fortunate I guess. I actually think that it's not too bad on the value for money front, and here's my reasoning behind that view.....I'll do the maths in UK pounds if ok...the box has cost me £350, Neil's cd's recently have all been around £20 when released, so 17 cd's at £20 is £340 already. A new blu-ray disc is usually around £15, so 5 blu-rays at £15 is another £75, running total £415. Add in a hardback book, usually £25 or so, and you're up to approx £440....so not too bad really. If this all reads as if I'm trying to justify it to Mrs Old Black, well, you might be right!!

What a great video promo!!!

It provides a lot of insight into the contents of this box set. And I completely agree with Old Black, as I too feel truly fortunate to have the means to purchase this set. I had to raid my savings a bit, but at least I had it to raid. I’m grateful that Neil has offered the CD set separately for those who only need the music, and of course I would imagine most of the films will eventually be available on NYA.

I’m a physical media person due to of my age, as the tactical experience has always been important. But I understand that most folks today are happy with the streaming options. Fortunately Neil has provided that as well. As a vinyl junky I simply had to order the 2lp set as well. If nothing else; Neil Young can be an expensive addiction, but the side effects are incredibly satisfying.

So, I see I was wrong about there not being a book. Glad to see that is also part of this deluxe edition. A little miffed that the Takes sampler for the Deluxe Ed is also on CD and not included as a vinyl album. Have to purchase that separately if you want the vinyl. The copy claims this will be the only way to get those songs on vinyl. I am very skeptical of that claim given Neil's past history of eventually releasing discs in the box sets as stand alone vinyl (see Dume, Odeon/Budokon, etc). It's fine to do that; I just find it disingenuous to claim that won't happen.

Let’s Make Music Great Again!
(The more I repeat this mantra, the further away I am from purchasing “Ark3”). After taking a deeper dive, there IS A LOT here. Unfortunately, it’s A LOT of what I’ve already purchased (bluray movies, cd music), or just recycled versions, of which I have little to no interest. Especially @ the high market entry price point. And finally, I am unmoved by the vinyl contents. Although, to be fair, If I am not considering adding the physical “box” to my shelf, the vinyl album cover will fill that void fer me. And, If Greedy Hand should release the enclosed book for separate sale (as they did w/the cd set vol 2), I ‘d also consider that purchase.
“ I said Solo, THEY said acoustic”. Well, I recall Neil saying “BlURAY” but delivers audio cd’s?
Don’t get me wrong. @ nearly 80 yo I appreciate that Neil is giving fans such output at a seemingly break neck pace. I’m truly happy for all those here that are happy their purchase.
Keep on rocking in the free market world.

I am trying to remember the first Neil album I bought and for how much. I think it was Zuma at age 15. I paid 7$ which is a guess? Amazing how all of this has changed so much. But it is all about the great music. Some of my favorites are from the 80's. The people upstairs used to complain whenever Re-ac-tor went for a spin. I love that song "Get Back on It"-

The tracklisting is great for subscribers and streaming listeners (tons of unreleased goodies along with a heaping serving of the same old album tracks). Herbs, you’re right, he did say Blu-Ray audio. And he’s always talking about putting out the music in the best available quality. But now we get CDs. Again. In terms of physical product, they’ve not come close to matching the first volume with its top-notch BluRay/DVD audio with visual component. I do want that book though! Hope they did include the tape log. Bought the last one when they released it separately. I like that it doesn’t take up a whole shelf.

It's refreshing to chew over the information for NYA3 as on Greedy Hand. Content looks broadly as expected but the timing still comes as a mild, hopeful surprise-- as does the preview song: Bright Sunny Day. Vintage 1978 Horse. It sounds, to me, like a rough draft. Yet it sneaks through my ears and gets stuck in my head. Oddly, I keep thinking it wouldn't be misplaced on Sleeps with Angels and can't put my finger on exactly why.

I gravitate to the CD set, which this time looks to be released simultaneously with the CD/blu-ray combo. I already have RNS, Human Highway, and Muddy Track on disc and NYA online looks economical for the rest (which is good stuff). Increasingly, I'm primarily interested in the music itself. The recordings and the songs. Much like the previous volume, NYA3 has the potential to re-contextualize--or maybe just clarify--NY's work from the period covered.

"It's a new day for love."

@ Dan : I am definitely going to buy the CD version. Buying on release date is tempting but also the price will drop (on the CD version) significantly after the date. It’s an idea to try but the excitement & expectation will likely force my hand to snap it up soon. What a treat. An embarrassment of riches! Barefoot floors!

I am more auditory and rarely sit still to watch a video. I listen to most of my music driving to and from work. I like to burn CDs, pack it full of fillers. Like Barefoot Floors will end up on every disc I rip. So cool!

I am a sound resolution snob with a Blu ray entertainment system with huge tower speakers, but it’s not set up. It has too much power in this little house. I bought the system for NYA 1 and the hope more would follow! But modern life has a high price and much as I’d love to buy it, I gotta save the money for a few hotels as we move our daughter to LA to do a 3 year masters program in Architecture. I can’t seem to make ends meet without working overtime so that is what I do.

Being a Restless Consumer, I threw a few tantrums about Neil not delivering blu ray but in the end it doesn’t matter. CD quality is good enough for my ears. Dume looks very tempting on vinyl tho. I do like having the physical product in hand. Strangely, I had bad luck with quality when buying Neil’s Ditch trilogy on vinyl. Covers coming unglued. So I quit buying vinyl. Dume is gonna bring me back.

I haven’t actually scrutinized the track listing as yet. Just a cursory glance, because I really want to experience the entire set as it plays for the first time. Sometimes knowing too much can create an expectation that I would like to avoid. So I will save the details until it shows up at my door. I’m sure that may sound weird to some, but it makes sense to me.

The element of surprise is important.

Alan, you’re going to love Dume on vinyl. Odeon Budokan this year was amazing too. Add those to Homegrown, Roxy, and Tuscaloosa for a whopping 5/10 Vol. II discs on vinyl so far, along with classic releases of TFA, TTN, OTB, LMYR, Zuma, Decade, and even Chrome Dreams now covering that era and most of Vol. II has been beautifully pressed. C
There’s even a chance for The Old Homestead!

@ Dan : Not wanting to really know the song list makes sense to me. For the full experience of the first listen, and getting to know these new works of Art heading to our Ear Goggles (Hendrix reference for those unfamiliar).

People who know me well are aware that I never listen to a band on the way to a show, or even weeks, months prior sometimes. Unless there is a new album to get acquainted with, it’s not happening. Coastal tour’s “I’m the Ocean” was one I anticipated and reveled in. But ya, playing an album I am about to see live on the way to the show is not something I would do.

Have a great day!

Dan, I fully understand that. I perused enough to get a general sense of what I’d be investing… there will probably still be surprised in listening. I’m sure there’s stuff I’ve forgotten since yesterday, never mind September. That we like to go in without knowing too much, that’s a testament to our trust and confidence in NY’s music. Especially at higher price points! However, Bright Sunny Day is still worth checking out on streaming if you haven’t.

Alan, I’d like to get Dume eventually. To hear Cortez and Danger Bird on brand new, clean vinyl… wow. On NYAII, the electric versions of Ride my Llama, Hawaii, and Kansas were some of my favorite discoveries. There could have been a much different, heavier Zuma back in ‘75. Amazing cover drawings, too!

Re: Greedy Hand & vinyls
I agree 100% on the vinyl re-leases from vol2. The pressings are top notch, low sound floor, great records. However, I have had to make these purchases (mostly) via Amazon. Which means no direct funds to Neil & the Archives team. It also means no High Res d/l’s. Kinda short sighted. I mean, where is all this vinyl stock coming from and why can’t the same vinyl be available from Greedy Hand? Most titles were listed as 50’s or 100’s sold in the last month, OR 10, 20 etc. available @ checkout?
@ Alan the upshot to this is sometimes better price points. Sometimes Much Better. As an example, After the Goldrush, no longer available from Greedy Hand, was WAY overpriced @ $100. No way, no how I’d pay that kinda money for a single LP re-issue. It was an equally tough call @ $50 from Amazon. But, wow! What a great sound. I cannot recall the original record sounding this sweet.
If GH is not going to re-stock vinyls maybe a hi res d/l card-code s/b included with vinyls no matter where they are purchased (Amazon, brick & mortar record stores). A lot of other artists do it - albeit mostly b/c they aren’t of NY’s caliber.

Last point—I want to clarify re: Zuma. The Horse sound is heavy throughout, but some songs (Stupid Girl, Don’t Cry No Tears strike me as glib and even a bit caddish. Kansas goes harder, is more incisively ambivalent on similar themes: a psychological portrait not dressed as party music. Hawaii is simultaneously dreamy and seedy, perfectly capturing the feeling of encountering an alienated drifter. Most of the original Zuma does not make me think that much.

Maybe NY had other plans for these songs. Or he just felt they went a bridge too far. Since the Ditch albums got (at best) mixed response in 1973-75, I can see him being wanting to go in a less obscure direction at the time.

I understand this deluxe set is extremely expensive, and times are tough right now for many. But here are a few observations worth noting.

For those who don’t care about the video, they have the option of just getting the CD set. And if they purchase through The Greedy Hand, they also get the hi res downloads. For those feeling that the CD set is overpriced; do the math, it’s not an outrageous price per disc.

For those who can’t afford either, then they have the option of subscribing to NYA website, and everything will be available there eventually.

For those completest out there : There were only 3,000 limited sets available for Volume 2, and they have upped the number this time to 5,000 for Volume 3. And Volume 2 sold out in a matter of hours, so this set will only last so long. If you can swing it; now’s the time. If you can’t swing it; know that the contents will be available on NYA website eventually.

For those who are disappointed with what isn’t included; Neil isn’t finished yet, so many of those recordings will eventually find their way into the world. Have some faith that Neil knows what he’s doing. And try to understand that this stuff belongs to him, not us.

Peace 🙏

Well, I'm truly astonished! My "Tracks" CD and NYA pin arrived this morning in the post, a very fast delivery (4 days) to the UK. I order books and CD's pretty regularly from the US, from private sellers and retailers, and delivery is usually around 10 days, so this has been exceptional. I'm off to play the CD!

My Takes CD arrived this morning along with the enamel pin. I'm a U. K. based fan, so service was great.
