In my opinion POTR do not add but detract from Neil. He is undoubtedly energised by them but I think that they get in the way. They are not particularly gifted or talented musicians (but for the connection with Willie we would never have heard of them or seen them).
Neil solo or with Crazy Horse cannot be bettered. POTR are an irrelevance that I for one can happily do without.
I have to admit that I'm not such a fan of the three guitar attack.
I agree with the previous two comments. This is my second concert with POTR. The bands style reminds me of the Stray Gators, in as much for me, they lack the ability take Neil's post '78 epic songs into stratospheric heights. I also have an emotional attachment to Crazy Horse and they, more than POTR, have that ability to touch me in a deeply profound way. Just my opinion. I also have to mention the money-grabbing and soulless place that is Hyde Park venue. Standard ticket paying fans are limited to within about 50 metres of the stage by barricades and G4s uniformed security. I arrived at the arena when the gates opened at 2pm where I managed to get a spot by the said barriers. 4 hours later Neil hit the stage and was like a dot in the distance. Meanwhile champagne quaffing corporate types - many clearly not fans but merely their for the kudos - piled in at 5.30 into the front section barricaded off to the 60,000 that had now gathered behind me. This, to me, is a totally unacceptable situation.
Hello from Paris or Lutece
ok ok for the critics but in music (and thankfully) to my "humble opinion" can we redo in a way that was done the first time in the same way ,,, ??? I'm not a fan of Promise of the Real but musically I think (croa croa) that they are people who work and in addition they have a huge chance it is to work with a Mr. Neil ... after, we like or we do not like this being I'm waiting for the live tomorrow and live the rebellious music.

Agreed, Hyde Park ain't no place for Neil's music - with O2 a dreadful venue.
Andy, I agree, both are terrible venues. I also think that over-familiarity with the set lists is becoming a problem. I think now is the right time for Neil to tour again with fresh material he's due to record with Crazy Horse. It's all becoming a bit stale in my view, particularly in relation to his uninspired Ragged Glory song selections. I was extremely underwhelmed by the Hyde Park show.
I think Neil and POTR are sounding great. Neil’s
playing on this tour has been really good. Judging from show reports the audiences have raving about the shows.
It seems with Neil there is always something else
If he’s electric they want acoustic if it’s POTR
they want crazy horse. I just enjoy the moment cause that’s where Neil is at. The precious present
is a blessing. This biased criticism of POTR is
unnecessary. Neil obviously enjoys playing and if
Neil didn’t think they were good enough they would not be backing them. These guys are very good. You can check out their records and live shows.
thanks to you out there for resurrecting the whole Promise Of The Real & Crazy Horse debate.
deja vu and all that over & over. we have all been there before...

@ Joe - yep, right. whatever Neil's doing (or not doing), there's always room for those who knows what's best for neil.
From concert review:
"He walks on with his band, Promise of the Real, and they proceed to kick it like Crazy Horse. They can be in harmony or make a racket, play quiet or very loud, but they always feel loose, even dirty. Occasionally they meet and face each other in a huddle, Young with his back to the audience, four heads down, jerking in rhythm, like vultures at a kill."

surprisingly, "vultures at a kill" can sound pretty amazing -- musically speaking.
Four heads down, jerking in rhythm, like vultures at a kill. Love it and a apt description. I agree w Joe W. POTR is a great band and they obviously adore each other. The joy is all over their faces. Theses are festival shows w huge crowds. Don't look for premiers of deep cuts. I love the Ragged Glory esp. Country Home. Its just so damn guitar forward and stark. I distinctly remember my first play of the album and those 10 notes ringing out. Hey, he could be living retired w Frank Sampedro in Hawaii as a lesbian couple. Tending to the garden and dogs, watching women's soccer, and taking the Subaru to Costco on the weekends. People can gripe if they want. We and He have heard it all before.
I think POTR are fantastic. I feel the same way about Crazy Horse. Sure, POTR isn't Crazy Horse but Crazy Horse isn't POTR. Both bands make Neil better in my opinion.
It's still Neil on stage as he always was and hopefully a long time will be.Hats off for Promise of the Real, for this music is for real.Of course it's not Crazy horse, but you can't compare the two bands as you can't compare apples with pears...they're not the same. And for Neil it doesn't matter with what musicians he plays. He can play with anybody.Cees Mostert,Holland.
