really? 2X Powderfinger ?!
Can you really have too much Powderfinger? It's like a greatest hit and a deep cut at the same time.
From the set... looks like a normal festival set, but instead of ending with RITFW they just started calling audibles and kept trucking along. Probably forgot they played it. I'm okay with that! Live music is better.
I saw him at the Catalyst in May of '97 he played Modern World (unreleased) 2x in the same set ... he could have played it 3x I wouldn't have complained, lol ....
Seeing Powderfinger twice on the setlist, I wondered if it had played somehow with different interpretations. And I was wondering if there was precedent for that. On the latter point, I then recalled the 1987 Blue Notes shows at the Coconut Grove in Santa Cruz where the entire set was repeated. While it was announced as "2 shows" for each of three nights, I don't believe there were separate tickets for early and late sets, so the audience was basically the same who heard the two virtually identical sets. While it was sort of weird to experience to see the sets repeated, it was also super exciting to see Neil in such a small venue and playing entirely new songs. It would be another 31 years before I had the opportunity to see Neil up close again, this time front row center at the Lobero Theater show in Santa Barbara.
Dia dhuit,
The great co-headlining event that all this is leading up to is not at Hyde Park London, though significant, but rather in Ireland, at Nowlan Park Kilkenny.
Thanks!
This was our show to see on this tour - Yep , pretty much the same rendition of PF 2 times over. At least that is how we perceived it. I think Roland's take on things gel with how it went down.
You could see the whole band all hepped-up after RITFW and Neil calling out the audibles for the next song and they just went into it pretty fast and full of emotion. Audience seemed totally OK with it, and we all just rolled with it. There was a very long delay after the opening act (Bear's Den) and crowd was very pent up for Neil and POTR so it was all good sledding after that and once things got rolling. And all of the band hit the stage running once they got there. That first hour and a half packed a lot of punch, and Neil clearly rode that high into the acoustic songs mid-set before things started rocking out again.
About 1/2 way into PF (2nd edition) there was a moment where it looked like Neil and Micah had some words and maybe a laugh about the situation...or maybe it was pre-ordained...not my sense though. All in all it was a great show and the audience was properly satiated at the end of it. A nearby biergarten in the park full of fans before crossing the bridge back into Old Town completed the experience. All the best to those seeing the next string of shows on this tour.
jeez, ya think neil might be losing it? playing the same song TWICE in a set? I saw him three times this year, and he literally looked at his lyric prompter before EVERY line in EVERY song. not a good sign.
Wish he’d break out “Ordinary People”.
Ya know, fer all the “ Lee Iacocca people”.
This was our 4th show in the past year (solo tour, with CH, and POTR at a festival before this) and I thought he was "dialled-in" last night.
A better explanation IMO is "just think of me as one you never figured..."
I also saw Bluenotes and the same set repeated(San Jose The Cabaret) . The venue announced that would happen. NY made a joke about it in the 2nd set then played something not in the first set. But everything else was the same. Him playing the same song twice is nothing new. Hes even played a song 3x. If hes really feeling that tune that night he plays it again. I remember him doing Goin Home twice.
Although it sounds like a happy accident with Powderfinger, Neil playing a song twice in the same set is hardly a new thing. Tonight's The Night, anyone?
The first time I saw Neil live at Great Woods in 1989, he played RITFW twice, that was normal on that tour. I think Neil was so jazzed about that song, he had to play it twice. I wasn't complaining....
I was at the Dresden show now I'm confused did he play powderfinger twice? I certainly remember him doing a cracking version of it but I'm sure I would have noticed if he played it twice. I tweeted two pictures of the show to the thrashers wheat twitter page. Berlin show was great too.
John, I'll bet you a bottle of Schorschbock 57 beer that he indeed played Powderfinger twice at the show in Dresden.
Winner can collect at an upcoming Crazy Horse show back home in North America this fall/winter.
ps - kicking myself a little for playing tourist and visiting palaces and castles instead of also committing to Berlin show last night...the set list looks like a nice supplement for a great back-to-back experience.
Mark, I'm sure he did play powderfinger twice the alarming thing is I hadn't noticed and I was sober! I guess I was just caught up in the moment who wouldn't want to hear powerdfinger twice anyway.
If there is a Crazy Horse tour I hope it comes to Europe and I'll definitely be going back to Germany for more shows.
