I just watched Neil and POTR replicate Ben Keith's steel part on Old Man.

well now that was quite enjoyable. about exactly 2hrs. I heard a few off key notes here and there but thats ok. Opening with Like a Inca was great. The crowd seemed very slow to get engaged. My stream worked perfect, not 1 complaint. Even if you saw only 1 or 2 live streams a year that 19.99 really pays off imo. We got another Over & Over too. Nice pic of you 2 also. Not a easy act to follow. Im sure Dylan will do his understated best. I dont care that his songs are nearly or totally unrecognizable from the original version. I start to care when its difficult to discern the tempo at all which is the driving force, ie Masterpiece. Forgive me if thats a contradiction. Give me even a average GD version over what I saw recently.

Great Live-Stream--Neil delivered the goods,in both form and function (stream). Very well paced show with a little something for everyone from my vantage point. Neil's voice was very good as was his playing--both concise and expansive, which makes no sense, but describes Neil's recent playing when he's really cooking...

Another good day to be a Neil fan.

Hello from Paris

It's finished live in Ireland. Thanks to all NYA team I was once again excited by Neil and his "young musicians" beautiful pictures the sound is good we spend a moment too short but it takes although they rest. Beautiful technical benefits, of course.
Thanks NY

...The last time Neil did a live stream with POTR, I didn't comment: mainly because I thought it was total crap and switched off half way through.

Well, I'm singing a different tune tonight. I loved tonight's live stream from start to finish. That's the honest truth.

Unfortunately I missed attending Hyde Park this year for personal reasons. And when you are losing (or have just lost) someone close to you, someone special, every second suddenly seems more precious.

Of course, our loved ones stay with us in spirit. But that's not to deny or downplay the great sense of loss we all feel. Every breath feels ever more valuable. Every action is more alive, every feeling more intense. I know that. I'm feeling it too, among my own circle.

And that's what Neil is feeling on this tour, I guarantee you that. He's played his heart out. He really has. His band have performed impeccably. They've more assuredly committed to a different direction this tour: they've fundamentally shifted from "more is more" to "less is more". Quality over quantity. It's an approach they touched on in 2016, but have really gone to town with this time around. They've realised that their considerable strengths are actually subtlety, feeling and nuance. The result is a band and band leader who are all now pulling in the same direction.

I loved the camaraderie, the setlist, I adored Neil's ferocious guitar tone and the urgency of his playing. The beautiful big bloodbath climax to Cortez, the cutting guitars solos of Throw Your Hatred Down. The Nelson brothers were as close to perfect as I've heard them, sparse, soulful and powerful. Doing justice to the songs.

Most of these songs were purpose-built for Crazy Horse, of course. A very special band. I'd personally love Sampedro to come out of retirement for one more go around. I wouldn't be at all surprised if that happens. Band members come out of retirement with the same freqency as mafia Dons. And I hope Poncho reads this and considers it. But in the meantime, I'll just say these other guys are doing okay.

In short, I thought the show was bloody brilliant.

Scotsman.

technical notes for those interested:
no video for the 1st 7-1/2 minutes.
3 audio blips that I heard: 1st happened when the video came on, 2nd during Over + Over, 3rd during Hank 2 Hendrix.
once again the audio was running ahead of the video as it has for the last few live streams that I have seen.
video looked good enough most of the time. audio was great - no complaints on the sbd mix. hi-res rules!
performance was what you would expect from Neil with the Real. this backing band is good for the more laid-back 'folk-rock' type material. but the Horse is better on the harder rockin' songs.
i won't complain about Neil's occasional out of synch w/the band on vocals - its what it is these days. just glad Neil is still out there playing.
for an almost 2 hr show the setlist was good enough. great to hear "Like An Inca"!

looking forward to more streams. well worth the price for a year of NYA.
here's hoping this starts a new platform for other bands/artists.

I think Throw Your Hatred Down becoming a setlist regular on this tour was non coincidental. Just look at the cynical world we're in now. We can offer negative anonymous opinions with the click of a mouse. Just look at the prior Hurricane post. I think Neil sensed this was the time to dust the tune off.

I do think there are some songs the Promise struggles with (and honestly Hurricane is one of them. It does need the Horse to soar.) But they really nail tunes like Alabama and I was stunned at how good On the Beach sounded. Scotts is right, put Micah on keys and this band really starts to come into focus.

Agree, Neil was really keyed in here and intense. I was watching with my son and he was blown away by Cortez. As far as feed quality, I do hope they fix the sync issue at some point. The bar was set so high at the first Crazy Horse show for the very first live stream... and somehow it's never been quite that good again. But I agree, 19.99... well worth it. Cant beat the excitement and not knowing what to expect next.

Finally... scotsman... I know it doesn't help much, but you do have our thoughts and prayers of rust nation. Seeing a positive review from you lifts my spirits... but I am truly sorry for your loss.

Agree Micah should be the keyboard/slide guitar player and have wanted that ever since seeing the Grey Riders with Hargus and the years with Spooner. Piano on the electric numbers really adds a depth to the tunes.

Thought it was a great show to see and hear. The vocal delay did go away when you refresh and I wonder if Firefox or Chrome is better?

I was there last night and can honestly say that was one of the best Neil Young gigs I’ve seen. The confluence of the good weather, the crowd who were really into it (though the changing of the guard for Bob Dylan’s set introduced a fair few planks into the mix), the sound was excellent (though could have been a bit louder for me), and not least the performance. There was a bit of a delay with him starting, everything was set up to start with Old Black (presumably for “Mansion on the Hill”), then the roadie ran on stage and quickly changed to the gold top Gibson - must have been a split second decision to do “Like an Inca”. I was very happy with the set list, a lot of songs that I’ve never heard live before (Inca, Over and Over, Throw Your Hatred Down, Human Highway) but I was a teeny, tiny bit disappointed that my hunch for “Crime and the City” didn’t pan out (as they said they’d rehearse that a while ago in the Contrarian). On a memorabilia note, the t-shirt situation was not good. Very boring or uncharacteristic designs (very cool looking skull logo with “Neil Young The Hitchhiker” on it but Neil Young isn’t really a skulls kind of guy). I need some new Neil Young t-shirts as my current ones are becoming a bit threadbare so hopefully the next tour will sort me out.

Dylan was OK, not the worst I’ve seen him but far from the best. The first half of his set felt really flat after Neil Young, his band felt more like a wedding band than a rock band. It got better as they went along, Neil coming out for Circle was fun but I’d be hard-pressed to go see Dylan again as he just didn’t do it for me (I had sworn after the last time that I wouldn’t pay to see him again as it was so bad but by craftily getting Neil to play with him, he suckered me in!).

The video screens showing the performance (presumably what was seen on the live stream) were out of sync with the audio so it’s probably an artefact of the live broadcast company used by the venue/promoter than something that’s wrong with the NYA stream.

How are we not talking about Ben Keith's signature steel part being replicated by Micah Nelson on OLD MAN

At 7/15/2019 07:18:00 PM, Blogger Adam2 said...

I'm seriously not being a jerk just to be a jerk. In 2011, Neil himself said after the death of Ben Keith, not only would his parts never be attempted/replicated again, but that the SONGS themselves would not be played without him or a band, out of respect.

What has happened?

"A lot of songs that I've done in the past where the primary musicians in the sound are no longer with us, I prefer to play those songs by myself and listen to them play in my head. Sometimes when I'm playing Old Man, I look over and I can still see Ben sitting there. But I can't ever play that song without him, I can't have another steel player play like that, there's nobody who can do that and I couldn't do it. So that's just how deep it is, it's just too deep." https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/neil-young-on-playing-with-country-music-legends-63979/

At 7/15/2019 09:00:00 PM, Blogger Babbo B. said...

But Neil obviously changed his mind (gee, when has that ever happened before?) since he's been playing a band version of Old Man with POTR since 2016 (which is probably why no one's talking about it now).

Neil says what he feels ... when the feeling changes what he said no longer applies.

At 7/16/2019 04:09:00 AM, Blogger Flyingscotzman said...

The reason no one is talking about it is that it didn't happen.

Micah played standard electric guitar on Old Man, possibly with a slide. For most of the song, he played nothing at all. Lukas was on Banjo.

When Neil is talking about not replacing Ben Keith, he is talking about Ben's majestic pedal steel work: not a couple of notes of slide guitar that any one of us could play.

Yes, Neil changes his mind like the wind and you'd be a fool to assume anything he says is the final word on the subject. But I don't see anything to worry about here.

Yes it absolutely did happen. I and everyone else saw it with my own eyes. Micah stood there silent, slide on left hand, and waited to copy Ben Keith's signature 2 note slide in the chorus of Old Man. Very cheap.

Jeez, remember last week when everyone was so positive and jazzed over the shows? Things have taken a negative turn here the last few days. In 35 years of being a Neil fan, it has never failed to surprise me how no matter what Neil does, there will be a segment of his fan base that will bash him over something. Does this mean they are bad fans? Of course not....

Maybe just a bit picky....

At 7/16/2019 09:46:00 AM, Blogger Flyingscotzman said...

Lukas has been playing that riff (on electric guitar) since at least 2016. The difference this tour is that Lukas has moved over to banjo, leaving Micah to play the electric guitar part.

It wasn't an imitation of Ben's liquid pedal steel part, it was just the song's couple of signature notes played on standard electric guitar with a slide.

For the rest of the song, when Ben would usually be doing his sparse magic around Neil's vocals, Micah was silent. It doesn't strike me as being a big deal.

plus it wasn't that good. poorly executed (both the banjo and the slide guitar part).

At 7/16/2019 11:18:00 AM, Blogger John said...

Backseat band members will always pitch in as if they were all next in line to be in Neil Young’s backing band. It sounded boss at the gig and to me it doesn’t go back on Neil’s statement about Ben, no one whipped out a pedal steel on the night. Plus I’m sure Ben would rather the music continued to live on at gigs than just become a museum piece.

Terry has left a new comment on your post "Bob Dylan & Neil Young Concert: Kilkenny, Ireland ..." @ http://neilyoungnews.thrasherswheat.org/2018/12/bob-dylan-neil-young-concert-kilkenny.html

I would like to point out that I really enjoyed the concert by Neil Young and Bob Dylan, I really thought the organization left a lot to be desired. For the number of people that were there, there were only two toilets in Nowlan Park and as a result, there were constant Qs at each one for the duration of the concert. There should have brought in portaloos.

When the concert was over at about 10pm thousands of very hungry people streamed out onto the street to find that every place was closed. The pubs had extended hours for the concert but not one of them was serving food. Not even Hotels. The few fast foods take away's had Qs of 100 people at each one of them and as a result, they ran out of food. For that reason I would never go to a big concert in Kilkenny again they are not able to deal with it. The whole Town should have got involved in it and pulled together. the concert-goers were definitely let down. I would like to see Kilkenny holding a flea coel. They would could take a leaf out of some of the smaller towns Book like Cavan or Drogheda. Bob stick with the acoustic guitar piano doesn't suit you.
